Shreyas Iyer’s parents have applied for urgent visas for Australia after their son was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in a hospital in Sydney due to internal bleeding after a ribcage injury he suffered during the third India-Australia ODI.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday revealed that Iyer is still in Sydney at a hospital where he is receiving treatment for a laceration injury to the spleen. He suffered the injury while taking a diving catch in the third ODI, which India won by nine wickets.

The BCCI added that Iyer is currently “medically stable, and recovering well” at the hospital under the supervision of the Indian team doctor.

“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress,” the board said in a statement.

Iyer’s parents seek urgent visas to meet son

The Indian board, however, did not share anything about the cricketer being admitted to the ICU. But multiple media reports have claimed that Iyer was in the ICU for two days due to internal bleeding.

A report in the news agency PTI said that Iyer fainted after being taken to the dressing room following the injury. He was then quickly taken to a hospital as his vital parameters were too low.

“The team doctor and physio didn’t take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He’s a tough lad and should be fine soon,” a source told.

Sources have also claimed that Iyer would need to be in the hospital for at least a week before travelling back to India and his full recovery may take more than three weeks.

Meanwhile, NDTV claims that Iyer’s parents have applied for urgent visas to be with their son in Sydney as he recovers from a serious injury that could have been fatal.

As things stand, Iyer could miss India’s home ODI series against South Africa, which starts on 30 November.
