Shreyas Iyer is set to miss cricket action for the next two months after suffering a spleen laceration injury in the third ODI between India and Australia last week, a report has claimed. Iyer suffered the serious injury while taking a catch on Saturday as he admitted to a hospital in Sydney for internal bleeding.
He was removed from the ICU on Monday after being medically stable and has been recovering at the hospital . Iyer has been able to walk, eat solid food and talk to people on the phone. On Thursday, he also thanked his well-wishers for praying for him.
“I’m currently in recovery process and getting better, every passing day. I’m deeply grateful to see all the kind wishes and support I’ve received- it truly means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts,” Iyer wrote on X and Instagram.
Iyer to miss ODIs vs South Africa
But a report in RevSportz says that the recovery could take longer than expected, which means Iyer could be out of action for two months, possibly missing the ODI series against South Africa at home in November-December.
He could make a return in the ODI series at home against New Zealand in January next year, but his absence till the end of the year would curtail any hopes of him forcing himself into the T20I squad before the World Cup in 2026.
Iyer was surprisingly left out of the Asia Cup 2025 T20I squad, but there were hopes that he could get back into contention in case of injuries or poor form of a player.
Iyer’s ‘medical procedure’ details revealed
Meanwhile, the report has also revealed the medical procedure Iyer underwent at the hospital. The BCCI had earlier refuted the claims that Iyer underwent surgery.
The 30-year-old Mumbai batter underwent the interventional trans-catheter embolization. It is a process that involves passing a small catheter through an artery to block bleeding at any site. It was conducted under emergency conditions as Iyer experienced internal bleeding after suffering a cut to his spleen.
