Shreyas Iyer has shared an update on his injury after suffering a painful blow during the (Indian Premier League) IPL 2026 match between the Punjab Kings and the Gujarat Titans in New Chandigarh on Tuesday.
The incident happened while Punjab Kings were chasing a target of 163 runs . During the 12th over, Iyer was at the non-striker’s end when his teammate Cooper Connolly smashed a powerful shot off Rashid Khan’s bowling.
Iyer did not get enough time to move away from the line of the ball, and it struck his wrist hard. The Punjab captain immediately fell to the ground and looked in serious pain, which worried the team management and the dug-out.
The coaching staff, including head coach Ricky Ponting, looked concerned as Iyer is an important player in the top order and also the captain. He was treated by the team physio and returned to batting. He was dismissed off the very next ball he faced.
Shreyas Iyer shares update on injury
After the game, Iyer gave an update about his injury and said he is staying hopeful about his recovery. “All I can say is nice. It’s the same as it was before. I don’t want to jinx anything. I just want to stay positive, and hopefully everything comes all right,” Iyer said.
Meanwhile, Iyer also heaped massive praise on Connolly, who helped PBKS chase down the target and win by 3 wickets. Connolly was making his IPL debut tonight and he smashed an unbeaten 72 off 44 balls to guide PBKS to a victory after a small hiccup in the middle overs.
“Some of the shots he played was surreal to watch, especially the backfoot six off Rashid, one of the best bowlers in the IPL. To hit him so clearly and neatly, it was simply phenomenal. He has got a great mindset as well. I have seen him in the past and hope he continues his form,” Iyer said.
