Prithvi Shaw has faced a tough time both personally and professionally in recent years. While his reputation has taken a hit amid reports suggesting the 25-year-old is more interested in partying than playing cricket, the young batter revealed that, despite everything, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar still firmly believes in his talent and potential.
Shaw’s cricketing career has been on a downward spiral since 2021, the last time he played for the Indian team. He went unsold in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction and was also dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad.
Lack of discipline, weight issues, poor fitness, lack of training and partying have been given as reasons for Shaw's downfall after a meteoric rise, which often led to experts comparing him to the great Tendulkar.
Shaw: Sachin said ‘Prithvi, I still believe in you’
In an interview with News24, Mumbai cricketer Shaw revealed that he had a meeting with Sachin recently in which the batting legend told him to get ‘back on track’ as soon as there are still many years of cricket left in him.
“Sachin sir knows about my journey. Arjun and I have been friends since we were 8-9 years old. We’ve played together, grown up together. Sir was also there sometimes. I had a word with him a little while ago too,” Shaw told News24.
“Hardly 2 month ago. He was practicing at the MIG. And I was there too. I spoke to him then too. When things go awry and you drift away, you need that mentor, who can light a spark into you. He still believes in me. He said ‘Prithvi, I still believe in you, and I’ll continue to do so’. Because he has seen me grow up. Even today, he tells me ‘Sahi track pe aa ja, jaise pehle tha’ (Come back on the same track as earlier). Everything is possible in the next 13-14 years. So he believes in me and that means a lot.”
Shwa also revealed that he has started training just like five years ago when he used to spend eight hours a day in the practice nets and should be back to his best soon.
