Dewald Brevis, who recently hit a blistering T20I hundred against Australia , created a new SA20 auction record on Tuesday as he was bought by Sourav Ganguly’s Pretoria Capitals for R16.5 million (approx. Rs 8.3 crore). Brevis wasn’t the only one to break the SA20 auction record as Aiden Markram was sold to Durban’s Super Giants for R14 million (approx. Rs 7 crore).

The previous SA20 record was held by Tristan Stubbs, who joined Sunrisers Eastern Cape for R9.2 million (approx. Rs 4.6 crore) during the very first auction in 2022.

Overall, the six SA20 franchises spent a massive R129.3 million (approx. Rs 65 crore) on 84 players ahead of the SA20 season 4. R116.9 million (approx. Rs 59 crore) was spent just on the South African players, including R22.8 million (approx. Rs 11 crore) on 12 Under-23 players.

Ganguly hails Brevis after SA20 auction record

Sourav Ganguly, who witnessed Brevis’s brilliance in the IPL recently, bid aggressively for the attacking South African batter, breaking all records. Ganguly was appointed the head coach of the SA20 franchise Pretoria Capitals last month.

“I hope he does well," Ganguly said. “I think he is a tremendous talent. His game has really progressed over the last one and a half year, as we saw against Australia. On that tour, he showed he is a game-changer, and that’s exactly what you need in T20 cricket.

“We have Russell, Rutherford, who can really step it up, and I hope Brevis does the same. I never associate performance with money. Leaving aside the R 16.5 million, I believe he is a fantastic talent. He plays spin very well, which is extremely important, and taking everything into account, that’s why he went for that price.”

Joburg Super Kings also spent big in the SA20 auction by buying Proteas all-rounder Wiaan Mulder for R9 million (approx. Rs 4.5 crore) and left-arm seamer Nandre Burger for R6.3 million (approx. Rs 3.1 crore).
