Former Pakistan cricketers Ramiz Raja and Aamer Sohail reignited the ‘handshake debate’ with the Indian team while commentating on the first Test against South Africa that concluded in Lahore on Wednesday. The Pakistani and South African cricketers were seen shaking hands at the end of the first Test at the Gaddafi Stadium, which the hosts won by 93 runs to gain a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
This was a day after the Indian and Pakistani hockey teams exchanged high-fives at the start of their Sultan of Johor Cup group-stage clash clash in Johor Bahru, Malaysia on Tuesday, which was in contrast with the stance adopted by the Indian men’s and women’s cricket teams in recent meetings with their arch-rivals.
The Suryakumar Yadav-led Men in Blue had refused to shake the hands of their opponents in each of their three meetings against Pakistan in last month’s Asia Cup in protest against the Pahalgam terror attack and in solidarity with the Indian armed forces.

The women’s team then followed suit in their World Cup showdown against Pakistan in Colombo. India ended up winning all four encounters, with the men’s team winning the Asia Cup in their third face-off against their arch-rivals.
‘Getting out of fashion these days’
Both Raja and Sohail couldn’t help but rekindle the debate surrounding the handshake drama, which had led to retaliatory gestures from Pakistani cricketers such as Sahibzada Farhan and Haris Rauf.
While Sohail describe a “handshake” as something that is “out of fashion these days”, Raja described it as a gesture that was associated with being “gentlemanly”, and that the Proteas simply were being “sane”.

“It’s getting out of hand,” Raja said in reply. “It’s a great tradition. And well, cricket is about tradition, being gentlemanly, about being fair. It’s important for South Africa to be sane.”
Raja and Sohail slammed by Indian fans for ‘handshake’ jibe
Indian cricket fans, however, did not take the comments too well, and made their displeasure known on social media. Here are select reactions:
Pakistan still crying over not getting handshakes 🤣🤣🤣🤣 this helps them to conveniently ignore the shitty performance of their team in limited overs format
