The rivalry between David Warner and Shaheen Afridi added another fiery chapter during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 clash between Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars at the Gaddafi Stadium on 4 May. Warner, who is leading Karachi this season, didn’t hold back after guiding his team to a four-wicket win over Afridi’s Lahore side.

There’s a bit of history between Warner and Shaheen. From heated stares to on-field shoulder bumps during Pakistan vs Australia matches, their battles have always been intense. One such moment came during the Lahore Test match in 2022, when Shaheen walked up close to Warner after bowling, leading to an awkward but funny exchange.

What happened?

In Sunday’s match, Shaheen Afridi went with a three-spinner attack, saying at the toss that the pitch would support turn. But Warner had other ideas. The Aussie veteran trusted his pacers and included four fast bowlers, Mir Hamza, Hasan Ali, Abbas Afridi, and Aamir Jamal, along with only one spinner, Mohammad Nabi.

Warner’s call turned out to be spot on. The pitch didn’t help spin at all, and it was Abbas Afridi who stole the show with 4/27 in three overs, helping Karachi restrict Lahore to 160/8. All three other pacers also chipped in with one wicket each. Karachi Kings then chased down the target comfortably.

Warner takes a sly dig at Shaheen

At the post-match presentation, when asked about his bowling combination, Warner didn’t hold back. Referring to Shaheen’s pre-match pitch comments, Warner said, “I think Shaheen said it was going to turn, but not one ball has turned in the three games here, so I was baffled by those comments.”

While Warner didn’t say much else, the message was clear, Shaheen’s spin-heavy plan had completely failed, and Warner made sure to point it out in front of everyone.

Meanwhile, both teams are still fighting for a spot in the PSL 2025 playoffs. Karachi Kings are currently sitting in third place in the points table with 10 points. Lahore Qalandars are placed at the fourth position with 9 points. The playoffs are scheduled to begin on 13 May with the final taking place on 18 May.
