Rohit Sharma’s childhood coach Dinesh Lad has made a big statement about Prithvi Shaw, saying that he spoiled his own cricket career by taking the wrong path. Shaw has not played for India since 2021 and was forced to change his domestic team after being dropped midway through the previous Ranji Trophy season.

Indian ODI captain Rohit Sharma’s childhood coach Dinesh Lad has given a strong opinion about Prithvi Shaw , saying the young cricketer spoiled his own career by taking the wrong path. Prithvi Shaw was once one of the most exciting names in Indian cricket before he faded away like hundreds of other players who come into the system every year.

Dinesh Lad said he saw Shaw grow up from the age of 10 and always knew he was a special player. Lad said this during a podcast with Gaurav Mangalani. He also lauded upcoming talents like Vaubhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre, both of whom became household names during IPL 2025.

“I have seen Prithvi since his childhood, from the time he was 10 years old. He was a highly talented player. But as I have said, everyone’s journey is individual, and I don’t know what exactly happened with him. Still, Prithvi Shaw was a very talented cricketer. Unfortunately, he went down the wrong path and ended up spoiling his cricket," Lad said.

“Even now, I feel we need a batter like him, the way he used to bat. Although right now we have some truly outstanding batters. For example, the way Vaibhav Suryavanshi is batting, and the way Ayush Mhatre is batting. These are future cricketers in the making. They are getting ready in line. Indian cricket is almost at the top,” he added.

Prithvi Shaw’s downfall

Prithvi scored a century on his Test debut at just age 18 in the 2018-19 season against West Indies, months after he captained India to win the Under-19 World Cup. Interestingly, Shubman Gill was the vice-captain of the same team, and he is now the Test captain of India.

Prithvi was picked for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia the same season but got ruled out after getting injured in one of the practice games in Sydney before the start of the first Test. He made a comeback later but couldn’t perform well. Things changed after that and he lost his place in the team and has not played for India since 2021.

The last few years have been tough for Shaw. He left Mumbai ahead of the new domestic season after being dropped midway in the previous Ranji Trophy due to poor form and some disciplinary problems. He played a few matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy but was not selected for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. In the 2025 IPL mega auction, he went unsold after Delhi Capitals released him.
