The decision that led to Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman’s sudden exit from the IPL 2026 has now taken a new turn, with a report claiming that the call was taken at the very top level of the BCCI. According to The Indian Express, the move to ask Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Mustafizur was not discussed within the IPL governing council or even among board members.
A top BCCI official told the news outlet that there was no internal discussion before the instruction was issued. The official claimed that even people closely involved with the IPL got to know about the decision through media reports. “We ourselves got to know about this through the media. There was no discussion. No suggestion was taken from our side,” the official was quoted as saying.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia did not respond to queries on whether a formal board meeting was held or if the IPL governing council was informed before the decision. However, Saikia had earlier defended the board’s stand, saying the instruction was issued due to “recent developments” and that KKR was asked to release Mustafizur from their squad.
BCB responds to Mustafizur’s IPL ban
The fallout from the decision has been severe. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) reacted strongly by revoking Mustafizur Rahman’s No Objection Certificate (NOC), effectively ruling him out of IPL 2026 even if KKR were to reverse their decision. Mustafizur had been bought by the three-time champions for Rs 9.20 crore at the IPL 2026 auction last month.
Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, criticised the move, saying it had hurt and angered citizens across the country. On Monday, Bangladesh’s Information and Broadcasting Ministry banned the telecast of IPL 2026 matches in the country.
As reported earlier, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has also decided not to send its national team to India for the T20 World Cup 2026, citing serious security concerns. BCB president Aminul Islam said the decision was taken after multiple meetings and that the board does not feel secure sending the team to India at this stage. The BCB has formally written to the ICC and is now waiting for a response.
Political tensions between India and Bangladesh have been rising in recent weeks, especially after a Hindu man was lynched and burned to death in Bangladesh over alleged blasphemy.
