MS Dhoni could return as Chennai Super Kings captain if Ruturaj Gaikwad doesn’t recover in time for the IPL 2025 clash against Delhi Capitals, hints batting coach Michael Hussey. Dhoni’s last game as captain was the IPL 2023 final against Gujarat Titans, which CSK won.

Will MS Dhoni captain CSK in absence of injured Ruturaj Gaikwad? Image: Reuters

In a big development that has sparked excitement among Chennai Super Kings fans, batting coach Michael Hussey has hinted that MS Dhoni could don the captain’s hat once again. This will happen if regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad fails to recover in time for the side’s next IPL 2025 clash against Delhi Capitals on Saturday.

Gaikwad sustained a painful blow to his right forearm during CSK’s recent loss to Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati, Assam. While the injury had raised concerns about his availability, Hussey tried to ease those fears on the eve of the match, which is slated to be played at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Maybe he could do it: Hussey hints at Dhoni

“He is going to try and have a bat today in training,” Hussey said in the pre-match press conference on Friday. “It is still a little bit sore, but it is improving every day. We are very confident that he will be fine for tomorrow.”

However, when quizzed about who might lead the side if Gaikwad doesn’t recover in time, Hussey raised eyebrows and gave a cheeky response.

“I am not sure, actually. We haven’t thought about that [Gaikwad’s replacement as captain] too much,” Hussey said before adding with a smile, “We’ve got some young guy coming through. He is behind the stumps. He has got a little bit of experience in that role so maybe he could do it.”

The ‘young guy’ in question is none other than the legendary MS Dhoni, who handed over the captaincy reins to Gaikwad ahead of the IPL 2024 season but has continued to play a crucial role behind the scenes and with the gloves.

Though Hussey’s comments were laced with humour, the mere suggestion of Dhoni leading CSK again, even for one match, has sparked a frenzy on social media. With CSK looking to bounce back from a defeat, all eyes will be on the team sheet on Saturday evening to see whether Dhoni is back in charge.

It is important to note that Dhoni’s final match as captain of Chennai Super Kings was the IPL 2023 final, where they defeated Gujarat Titans on the last ball to clinch their record fifth title. Prior to the 2024 season, Ruturaj Gaikwad was named the captain, leading many to believe that it would be Dhoni’s last year in the IPL. However, Dhoni made a return for the 2025 season, and there is still no official word on when he plans to retire.
