The Mumbai Indians entered the auction with most of their work already done, which was not really a surprise, given the quality they have across the board and considering the fact that they reached Qualifier 2 earlier this year, only to be denied by the Punjab Kings.
Still, they needed to find back-ups for a few key players and for some important spots, just in case of contingencies. And they largely did well on that front, with Quinton de Kock the obvious superstar signing. That too at a very economical base price of Rs 1 crore.
They also signed Atharva Ankolekar, Danish Malewar and Mohammad Izhar. Malewar has been a consistent run-scorer for Vidarbha lately, even performing in the Duleep Trophy earlier this season, whereas Izhar gives them another left-arm pace option.
Ankolekar, meanwhile, is a left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder, who plays for Mumbai in domestic cricket and also bats left-handed, thereby giving MI an option of resting Mitchell Santner, if required, and playing an overseas batter/pacer in his stead. Mayank Rawat, an all-rounder from Delhi, was their final purchase.
Mumbai Indians 2026 squad: Biggest Strength
Well, it does not take rocket science to figure out. But if you were to spell it out, it would be continuity and a glut of match-winners, with unmatched experience of winning the IPL. Most of their playing eleven/twelve was set before a paddle had been raised at the auction, and that speaks to the clarity and conviction in their team building. And having overcome a blip at the start of last season, only to roar back and make the playoffs, MI will feel that their potential, this time out, is limitless.
Oh, and they have de Kock as well now, who in the ongoing T20I series against India, has shown that he is still a match-winner and a genuine point-of-difference.

Mumbai Indians 2026 squad: Biggest Weakness
It is, quite frankly, tough to pinpoint anything. MI have world-class batters, world-class bowlers and a world-class team, full stop. But one area of concern could be that the IPL will arrive hot on the heels of a T20 World Cup that will involve a lot of traveling, and will be mentally and physically gruelling.
Since most of MI’s players are expected to play big roles for their respective national sides, how quickly they recover and hit these straps, will be interesting to see. Although chances are that they may tide over that potentially rough patch too.
