The Los Angeles 2028 Olympics organising committee confirmed the venue for the cricket matches on Tuesday. A temporary stadium will be built at the Fairgrounds in Pomona, Southern California, to host the cricket tournament during the LA28.
Venue announced for cricket’s Olympics return at LA28
Pomona is about 50km to the east of Los Angeles and expect an hour’s drive from the athletes’ village in the city to reach the venue. Fairgrounds in Pomona is officially known as Fairplex. It is a 500-acre complex that has hosted the Los Angeles County Fair since 1922.
“We welcome the announcement of the venue for cricket at Los Angeles 2028 as it is a significant step towards the preparation for our sport’s return to the Olympics,” ICC chair Jay Shah said. “Although cricket is a hugely popular sport, it will be a fantastic opportunity to expand traditional boundaries when it features in the Olympics in the fast-paced, exciting T20 format that should appeal to new audiences.”
The cricket tournament at LA28 will mark the return of the sport to the Olympics after 128 years. The last time cricket was part of the Olympics was in the 1900 Paris Games when Great Britain played France in a two-day match.
Last week, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed that the cricket programme at LA28 will include a six-team men's and women's tournament . All six teams in the men’s and women’s tournaments could have a 15-member squad.
The Los Angeles Olympics will take place between 14-30 July 2028.
The T20 World Cup matches in New York in 2024 were also played at a temporary stadium. The India vs Pakistan match in the 2024 T20 World Cup took place in a pop-up stadium in New York.
Cricket is also expected to be part of the 2032 Olympics, which will take place in Brisbane, Australia.
