Though Team India managed to finish the England series at a 2-2 draw, in hindsight, one could reflect on certain strategic choices and player selections, which might have yielded different results and shifted the balance in India’s favour. One such aspect is the snub of Kuldeep Yadav.
Despite being regularly backed by experts, Kuldeep Yadav did not get a single chance in the series. Hence, what he could have offered with his deceiving variations in the series will forever remain a big what-if.
Gambhir-Gill picked Sundar over Kuldeep
Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill entrusted faith in Washington Sundar over Kuldeep, as the former gives batting depth besides chipping in with tight overs of spin. Sundar’s selection eventually reaped ideal dividends in the 5th Test, as he played a blinder of a knock (53 runs) in the second innings and powered India to set a target of 374 in front of the hosts.
A spinning all-rounder or a bona fide spinner is a debate that may never cease, but former India cricketer Robin Uthappa has accepted the fact that a player like Sundar will always be favoured over Kuldeep as far as Test cricket is concerned. However, Uthappa did not conclude without providing a way out to Kuldeep- work on batting.
“Put Kuldeep in the 11 and make sure your batting is still in a state where none of the fans will go after the team management or the captain. With all due respect to Kuldeep’s prowess with the ball, he’s got limitations to his batting. That’s going to take a lot of effort from his side,” said Uthappa via his YouTube channel.
Needs to follow Ashwin’s way
Uthappa advised Kuldeep to follow the path that Ravichandran Ashwin pioneered while playing for Team India.
“Ashwin has got 5-6 Test hundreds. If he can do that at the lower middle batting order, say at number eight or nine, then he will certainly play more Tests,” he added.
