‘Very much like previous captain’: Jonathan Trott takes dig at Virat Kohli while slamming Shubman Gill’s ‘acting’

Former England cricketer Jonathan Trott wasn’t impressed with Shubman Gill’s “acting” as he slammed the Indian captain for his conduct against Zak Crawley in the dying minutes of Day 3 of the Lord’s Test on Friday. After India were bowled out for 387, the same as England’s first innings, Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley had to come out to bat with only a few minutes left for Day 3’s play to end.

India wanted to bowl at least two overs in the six minutes that they had, but Crawley resorted to time-wasting methods like pulling out before Jasprit Bumrah’s delivery or calling for a physio after being hit on the gloves. Indian captain Gill was visibly unhappy with England’s tactics and confronted Crawley for time-wasting.

Trott slams Gill’s behaviour

Gill was also seen throwing some expletives at Crawley and Afghanistan cricket team coach Trott wasn’t happy with how the Indian batter behaved as he also made a Virat Kohli reference.

“We don’t know what went on when England were fielding, whether they were dishing it out. But I don’t like the acting from Shubman Gill, as a captain you set the tone," Trott told JioHotstar. “Pointing fingers and getting very confrontational, very much like a previous captain before getting in the face of the opposition. I am all for being competitive and being tough on the field, sometimes you have to rise above it. It sets up nicely for tomorrow’s play.”

Former India captain Anil Kumble also underlined how Gill has been a lot more aggressive lately. “I haven’t seen Shubman so animated and going at the opposition. He said a few words in the first innings as well.”

Eventually, Crawley’s tactics worked as England only batted for one over and finished on 2/0. They will be back on Saturday for Day 4 with the third Test nicely poised. England will aim to set a solid target, or else India have a chance to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.
