The epic series against England has left a lot to be discussed; however, one subject that has not died down ever since its inception is the curious case of Jasprit Bumrah's workload. Being aware of how much strain his body can take, Bumrah had conveyed in advance that he could only feature in three out of the five Tests, and in the follow-up, the information was made public by the team ahead of the start of the series. In due course, the pacer played the first, third, and fourth games of the series and ended up with 14 wickets in the series, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

While many experts have already shared their thoughts on Bumrah getting the provision to pick and choose how many games he will play, former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta has also chimed in on the topic, but threw weight on a completely different aspect of the subject.

Deep Dasgupta slams Team management over Bumrah

According to Dasgupta, India should have refrained from making the announcement related to Jasprit Bumrah’s availability beforehand. He believes that team management could have communicated the call on Bumrah ahead of the start of a particular test, instead of letting it out before the series had even started.

“India should not have announced prior to departing for the series that he [Bumrah] would be playing only three Test matches. You can always take a call on his availability as and when required, based on his physical situation and the prevailing scenario of the series. So, India could have avoided that [announcement],” Dasgupta told IANS.

Dasgupta further said that as India have the best bowler in their ranks, they must find a way to keep him ready for all the games, rather than just the crucial ones.

“Keep him ready for the crucial ones, and make sure he’s available for all games. Then, if there are injuries, if the body has taken a toll and he’s not ready, that’s a different issue altogether. But this availability for 50 per cent, 60 per cent, and all, that needs to be looked into,” he added.
