India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was once again the star with the ball on Day 1 of the third Test at Lord’s , producing a magical delivery to castle England’s Harry Brook. While Joe Root’s unbeaten 99 grabbed headlines, Bumrah’s wicket of Brook was seen as the standout moment of the day.
Bumrah hailed by legends
Former Sri Lanka great Kumar Sangakkara couldn’t stop praising Bumrah’s brilliance while speaking to Sky Sports with Mel Jones and Ravi Shastri after close of play on Thursday. He called it a “setup” masterclass and praised the variety Bumrah used in his two-over burst that eventually saw Brook depart for 11 off 20 balls.
“But what I really loved during the whole day was the setup of Brook by Bumrah. I thought that was just exceptional bowling, great control of line and length. I mean, I watch him, they’ve identified that off-cutter as being his big point, even though he bats just outside of stump,” Sangakkara said.
“And control of line and length in those two overs from Bumrah was exceptional. He went full, slightly short, six-and-a-half to seven-and-a-half meters, just three-and-a-half feet of play there, a bouncer in between to push Brook onto the back foot. Then, of course, the control on the seam, cross-seam the ball before he got Brook, and then a perfect seam angling back in slightly wider to castle him. I thought that was just exceptional skill,” he added.
Bumrah finished with figures of 1 for 35 in 18 overs as England reached 251/4 at stumps. Apart from Bumrah, Nitish Kumar Reddy picked up two wickets, while Ravindra Jadeja took one under his belt. India bowled with discipline and control despite the flat pitch at Lord’s.
The visitors restricted England’s scoring rate to just 3.02, one of the lowest in the Bazball era since Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum took over in 2022. Meanwhile, Joe Root ended the day at an unbeaten score of 99, while Stokes finished on gritty 39 not out. India will hope to get some early wickets on Day 2 to put the pressure back on England.
