Jasprit Bumrah became only the second Indian bowler to complete 100 wickets in Twenty20 Internationals on Tuesday, achieving the feat after dismissing Dewald Brevis during the first T20I against South Africa in Cuttack. Bumrah achieved the feat after returning to the attack shortly after the halfway stage of the Proteas’ chase, with Brevis getting a thick top-edge while attempting a pull, with India skipper Suryakumar Yadav charging in from extra cover to complete the catch.
Bumrah joins elite club after collecting 100th T20I wicket
Bumrah thus became only the second Indian after Arshdeep Singh to achieve the feat of 100 or more wickets for India in the shortest form of the game. He also became only the fifth bowler to collect 100 or more wickets in all three formats after Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga, New Zealand’s Tim Southee, Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan and Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi.
One wicket would then quickly lead to another with India’s premier paceman later getting Keshav Maharaj caught-behind for a two-ball duck later in the same over, reducing South Africa to 71/8 after the Men in Blue set them 176 to win the T20I series opener at Cuttack’s Barabati Stadium.
Bumrah’s twin-strike was part of a clinical bowling performance by the Men in Blue in the first of five T20Is against South Africa. Besides Bumrah (2/17), Axar Patel (2/7), Arshdeep (2/14) and Varun Chakravarthy (2/19) also helped themselves to a couple of wickets.
Hardik Pandya (1/16) and Shivam Dube (1/1) collected a wicket each, the latter grabbing the final wicket of the South African innings in his third delivery of the evening, resulting in the Proteas getting bundled out for a paltry 74 and suffering a 101-run thrashing.
Contentious no-ball decision by umpire
There was, however, some controversy over Bumrah’s 100th T20I wicket, with the pacer appearing to have overstepped during the delivery. The TV umpire decided to have a look, and eventually ruled it in favour of the bowler, whose heel on the line and did not appear to have a significant part of his boot behind it.
While some fans did criticise the umpire’s decision for siding with the bowler, there were also those who hailed ‘Boom’ for his special feat. Here are select reactions:

Jasprit Bumrah completes his 100 T20I wickets and becomes the only cricketer to have a bowling average under 23.5 with a minimum of 100 wickets in all of Test, ODIs, T20Is, First class, List A and T20s. Unique 🐐
