IPL Retention LIVE Updates: Kumble explains possible reason behind KKR's release of Russell

Speaking on JioStar’s TATA IPL 2026 ‘Retention Special’, JioStar expert Anil Kumble shared his thoughts on KKR’s decision to release Andre Russell:
“It is a big call for KKR to release Andre Russell because he has been their go-to player over the years. We know what he can do at the crease, not just with the bat but also with the ball. He is very destructive, and we have seen him change games from nowhere for KKR. It is a big release for KKR. I am sure there were many discussions and conversations before taking this decision. But I think when you look at the longer term and what is best for the team, they probably had to let go of Andre Russell.”

IPL Retention LIVE Updates: KKR eyeing Cameron Green? Aakash Chopra thinks so

Speaking on JioStar’s TATA IPL 2026 ‘Retention Special’, JioStar expert Aakash Chopra spoke on KKR’s released players and retention strategy:
“Looks like KKR is starting from scratch. And because KKR is going to enter the mini-auction with a purse size of 65 crores, they are going to pretty much dictate the auction proceedings, at least in the first 2–3 vital slots. So, someone like Cameron Green, you almost think that he is most likely to go to KKR, because of that purse size. They are going to be on a shopping spree when it comes to overseas players in the mini-auction.”

IPL Retention LIVE Updates: List of all confirmed trades before 2026 auction

Ahead of the IPL 2026 Retention Deadline, the franchises have agreed to the following player trades.

Ravindra Jadeja: Senior All-rounder and former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ravindra Jadeja will represent Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the upcoming IPL season following a successful trade. Jadeja, who played for CSK for 12 seasons, is among the most experienced players in the league, having played over 250 games. As part of the trade agreement, his league fee has been revised from INR 18 crore to INR 14 crore.

Sanju Samson: Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain and India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson will now represent Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at his existing league fee of INR 18 crore. One of the most experienced players in the league, Samson has played 177 IPL matches. CSK will be only the third franchise of his career. Since making his IPL debut in 2013, the senior pro has represented RR in all but two seasons—2016 and 2017—when he played for Delhi Capitals.

Sam Curran: England all-rounder Sam Curran will move from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to Rajasthan Royals (RR) at his existing league fee of INR 2.4 crore following a successful trade. The 27-year-old has played 64 IPL matches, and RR will be his third franchise, having previously represented Punjab Kings in 2019, 2023 and 2024, and CSK in the other seasons.

Mohd Shami: Veteran fast bowler Mohd Shami will turn out for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) after a successful trade from Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Shami, the second-most expensive acquisition for SRH ahead of the IPL 2025 season at INR 10 crore, will move to LSG at his existing fee. The senior pacer brings a wealth of experience, having played 119 IPL matches across five franchises since making his debut in 2013. Before joining SRH, Shami was an integral part of the Gujarat Titans setup and clinched the Purple Cap in 2023 with 28 wickets in 17 matches. Although he missed the 2024 season due to injury, he enjoyed an equally impactful 2023 campaign, contributing 20 wickets to GT’s title triumph.

Mayank Markande: Leg-spinner Mayank Markande will return to his former franchise, the Mumbai Indians (MI), following a successful trade from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Acquired by KKR for a fee of INR 30 lakh, Markande will join MI at his existing fee. Markande began his IPL career with MI, representing the franchise in 2018, 2019 and 2022, before turning out for Rajasthan Royals in 2021 and Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2023 and 2024. He has featured in 37 IPL matches, taking 37 wickets.

Arjun Tendulkar: Bowling all-rounder Arjun Tendulkar will represent Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) following a successful transfer from Mumbai Indians. Arjun will move to LSG at his existing fee of INR 30 lakh. First picked by MI at the 2021 IPL auction, he made his IPL debut for the franchise in 2023.

Nitish Rana: Left-handed batter Nitish Rana will now represent Delhi Capitals (DC) following a trade from Rajasthan Royals (RR). He will continue at his existing fee of INR 4.2 crore, which RR had bid for at the auction ahead of the TATA IPL 2025 season. Rana, who has featured in over 100 games, captained Kolkata Knight Riders in 2023 when Shreyas Iyer was sidelined due to injury.

Donovan Ferreira: All-rounder Donovan Ferreira will return to his first franchise, Rajasthan Royals (RR), following a successful trade from Delhi Capitals (DC). As per the transfer agreement, his fee has been revised from INR 75 lakh to INR 1 crore.

Does IPL have trades? Of course, and some big ones were announced today

Yes, IPL has trades. A trading window opens a month after a season ends and stays open a week before the auction. It reopens after the auction and shuts 30 days before the next season. In IPL trades, a team can swap a player with another team or sell or buy a player with another team in an all-cash deal.

At what time will IPL retention be announced?

The IPL retention show is set to begin from 5 PM IST on JioHotsar and Star Sports. The official list of all teams would be announced from 5 PM IST on 15 November (Saturday).

IPL Retention LIVE Updates: The full list of retained and released players for all Indian Premier League (IPL) teams would be made official on Saturday (15 November). As we wait for the IPL retention deadline to end, the teams are busy finalising who to retain and release.

Unlike a mega auction, do not expect a flurry of releases from IPL teams ahead of the 2026 mini-auction, except for teams like Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. But some big-money releases could take place from teams like the Kolkata Knight Riders and defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Big releases expected on IPL retention deadline day

KKR are expected to release Venkatesh Iyer, who was bought for a massive Rs 23.75 crore in the last mega auction. Besides Iyer, KKR can also let go of Anrich Nortje and Quinton de Kock.

Similarly, Royal Challengers Bengaluru are expected to release Liam Livingstone, for whom they paid Rs 8.75 crore in the IPL 2025 auction. IPL 2025 finalists, Punjab Kings, could also part ways with Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell (Rs 4.2 crore).

Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, who finished 10th and 9th, respectively, in IPL 2025, are expected to make most releases. As per reports, Devon Conway, Rahul Tripathi, Rachin Ravindra, Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar and Jamie Overton could leave CSK.

RR could also release Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Maheesh Theekshana, Fazalhaq Farooqi and Kwena Maphaka.

CSK and RR have completed a swap deal in which Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran have left Chennai, while Sanju Samson will move the other way.

This brings us to the IPL trades. This is also an option for IPL teams to fine-tune their squads. A few moves have already been made officially. The Mumbai Indians have brought in Shardul Thakur and Sherfane Rutherford from Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans.

Indian star pacer Mohammed Shami has moved to LSG from Sunrisers Hyderabad. Meanwhile, we need to remember that while the option to retain and release players ends on Saturday, trades can continue until 30 days before the next season.
