The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has been suspended for a week because of rising tensions at the India-Pakistan border. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made this decision after a match between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings in Dharamsala was stopped because of a security alert.
The IPL is not just about cricket, it brings a lot of money for the BCCI. It is the cash cow for the world’s richest cricketing body. But now, because of this one-week break, the BCCI may lose a big amount of money.
How much money BCCI could lose
The BCCI reportedly earns between Rs 100-125 crore from each IPL match. Even if they have insurance, they can still lose around Rs 60 crore for every missed match. If 5 to 7 matches are affected during this week-long break, the BCCI could lose Rs 300-420 crore. And if the break becomes longer or the season gets canceled, the losses can be even worse.
Franchises and sponsors also affected
The IPL has 10 teams, and they all get a share of the BCCI’s money from sponsors and broadcasters. This is called the ‘central revenue pool.’ If the IPL 2025 doesn’t happen fully, the amount of money each team gets will reduce. Broadcasters could lose some of their ad revenue which could go up to Rs 5,500 crore.
The BCCI arranged a special Vande Bharat train to bring back players, support staff, production crew, commentators, and operations staff from Dharamsala to Delhi on Friday morning and announced the one-week suspension, keeping in mind the national sentiment and safety of all stakeholders.
