Rain spoiled the party in Bengaluru as the big IPL 2025 clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) was abandoned without a ball being bowled. It was supposed to be a grand return for IPL after a one-week break but the weather had the final say.

The no result helped RCB gain one point and move to 17 points, which puts them at the top of the points table and one step closer to securing the playoff berth. Meanwhile, the defending champions KKR have now been officially knocked out of the playoff race.

What it means for RCB?

RCB are just one win away from confirming a top-two finish and Qualifier 1 spot. They have two matches left, against Sunrisers Hyderabad (23 May) and Lucknow Super Giants (27 May). Winning even one of those will likely confirm their place in the playoffs. Winning both could guarantee a top finish.

The RCB will also qualify if either Delhi Capitals or Punjab Kings lose in their respective games tomorrow.

What it means for KKR?

This has been a forgettable title defense for KKR. With 12 points from 13 games and only one match left (vs SRH on 25 May), they are officially eliminated. The best they can do now is play party-spoilers for other teams.

What it means for other teams?

The race is now heating up with every match almost like a knockout for the remaining teams. Here are the updated qualification scenarios for each franchise.

Gujarat Titans (GT): They have 16 points and 3 matches left in the season. GT are in a strong position and need just one win to seal a playoff spot.

Punjab Kings (PBKS): They have 15 points and 3 matches left in the season. PBKS are very much in the race but will need to win at least two of their remaining games to stay in strong contention for a playoff spot.

Mumbai Indians (MI): They are currently on 14 points with 2 matches left. MI must win both of their remaining games to qualify directly and avoid relying on Net Run Rate (NRR).

Delhi Capitals (DC): DC have 13 points with 3 games to go. They can still qualify by winning two matches but a lower NRR could prove costly if the race gets tighter.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG): LSG have 10 points from 11 matches with 3 games remaining. They must win all their remaining matches to have any chance of qualifying, which would take them to 16 points.
