Royal Challengers Bengaluru suffered their first defeat of the 2025 Indian Premier League after back-to-back victories on the road with the Rajat Patidar-led side getting outplayed by Gujarat Titans at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday. It wasn’t an ideal homecoming for RCB at all as they were restricted to a sub-par 169/8 after GT skipper Shubman Gill opted to field, thanks to Mohammed Siraj’s clinical 3/19 from his full quota of overs.
Jos Buttler later blasted an unbeaten 73 off 39 deliveries as the Titans chased the target down with eight wickets and more than two overs to spare to collect their second win in three outings and further improve their Net Run Rate (NRR).
Both RCB skipper Patidar and his GT counterpart Gill agreed that 169 was by no means a winning total at the batting paradise that is the Chinnaswamy, where a bowling unit cannot afford to go easy even if they’re defending a score in the range of 200-220.
“We have seen on this ground.. restricting them to 170 was a good effort. The wicket has something in it sometimes; you can score 250 as well as get early wickets, there was something for the fast bowlers in the first seven-eight overs and we knew if we pick early wickets then we are in the game,” opening batter Gill said during the post-match presentation ceremony.
RCB were targeting 190 after powerplay, Patidar reveals
Patidar, who suffered his first defeat as RCB captain, admitted that losing three wickets in the powerplay – two of them to Siraj – and collecting just 38 runs at the end of six overs “harmed” their chances of collecting a hat-trick of victories at the start of the season.
“Not 200, we were targeting around 190 after the powerplay, but losing early wickets harmed this match. I think the intent was good, but we shouldn’t have lost as many as 3 wickets in the PP, it was one wicket too many,” Patidar said during the presentation cerermony.
Impact Shorts
More ShortsThe Madhya Pradesh batter, however, credited his bowlers for stretching GT’s chase to the 18th over in order to reduce the impact of the defeat on their NRR – a metric that fans have associated the franchise with over the years.
“The conditions did get better, the bowlers were amazing trying to defend this total, to take this chase into the 18th over was amazing to watch. The way Jitesh, Liam Livingstone, and Tim David, the way they batted, it was a positive for us. We’re confident about the batting line-up, they’re showing some positive intent which is very good for us,” Patidar added.
