Australia’s Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins has confirmed his availability for the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), stating that he has successfully managed his ankle injury and is on track for a full-fledged return. Cummins missed out on the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to an ankle injury he sustained during the Test series against India. Steve Smith has taken charge as Australia’s captain in his absence.
Pat Cummins says he will play in IPL 2025
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Cummins has provided a positive update on his fitness, assuring fans that his ankle is feeling strong and he should be fine before the start of IPL 2025 . Cummins revealed that he and his medical team opted against surgery, focusing instead on rehabilitation to ensure long-term fitness.
“The ankle is all going strong, [I have been] able to give it a good rest and then been building up slowly, which you don’t get to do when you play lots of cricket. It’s feeling as strong as it has for a fair while. Should be fine [for the IPL], that’s the plan. So, have a few weeks of bowling, building back up and then hopefully don’t have to worry about it for a while,” Cummins said.
“It’s something that we’ve opted never to have surgery on or intervene too much, just a lot of rehab. Having this break meant that I could get a couple of cortisones and really rehab it well the last couple of weeks,” he explained.
Cummins was a marquee signing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2024 auction, bringing leadership and world-class bowling expertise to the franchise. He led his team to the IPL 2024 final, where they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders. Cummins’ return to full fitness will be a major boost for SRH as they prepare for IPL 2025, aiming to improve upon their previous campaign.
Meanwhile, Cummins will also be available for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa, marking his second appearance in the title clash. He previously led Australia to victory in the 2021-23 WTC final against India.
