The 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to kick off with a match between defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on 22 March. With the latest season just days away, teams are closely monitoring the fitness of key players. While some stars are racing against time to return to action, others have fully recovered and are set to take the field.

Here’s an update on the fitness status of major players, including Mumbai Indians’ pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson.

Jasprit Bumrah likely to miss initial matches for Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians could face a tough start to their IPL 2025 campaign as their premier fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah , is likely to miss the opening matches. The 30-year-old pacer has been recovering from a lower back injury he sustained during the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney earlier this year.

Bumrah, who had an outstanding Test series, was unable to bowl in Australia’s second innings in the last Test, where they successfully chased down 162 runs. Since then, he has missed India’s Champions Trophy triumph and has been undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence.

Mumbai Indians, led by Hardik Pandya, will now have to rely on pacers Trent Boult, Corbin Bosch, and Deepak Chahar to lead their attack in Bumrah’s absence. Pandya himself might have to bowl more overs until Bumrah makes his return.

Sanju Samson cleared to play but wicketkeeping still under review

There’s good news for Rajasthan Royals fans as their captain Sanju Samson has completed his rehabilitation after undergoing surgery on his right index finger. The injury occurred during India’s T20I series against England last month.

Samson has reportedly been cleared to bat without restrictions, but the National Cricket Academy (NCA) physios will continue to assess his wicketkeeping capabilities. If Samson is unable to don the gloves, Dhruv Jurel is likely to step in as Rajasthan Royals’ first-choice wicketkeeper for the tournament.

Mayank Yadav, Avesh Khan, and Mohsin Khan on the road to recovery

Young pace sensation Mayank Yadav, who last played in January for Madhya Pradesh against Kerala, has been recovering from a back issue at the NCA. He has been joined by Avesh Khan and Mohsin Khan, both of whom are also nursing injuries.

Yadav, who made a name for himself with his express pace, is being monitored closely by Lucknow Super Giants management, who are hopeful of his return by mid-season. Avesh and Mohsin’s availability will also be crucial for LSG’s campaign.
