After days of uncertainty, Mitchell Starc has reportedly written an email to the Delhi Capitals (DC), informing them about his inability to return for the remaining Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 matches. It was long speculated that Starc would not return after the IPL 2025 was suspended midway due to the India-Pakistan conflict.

Starc was part of the Dharamsala match that was suspended midway on 8 May after Pakistan attacked cities across the northwestern border. The players from the two teams – Punjab Kings (PBKS) and DC were evacuated from Dharamsala through a special train as the airport was closed.

Starc set to lose big bucks for missing remainder of IPL 2025

The Aussie fast bowler, Starc, was bought for Rs 11.75 crore ($2.1 million) in the mega auction by DC and had taken 14 wickets so far in 11 matches at an average of 26. DC are still alive in the playoff race and Starc’s availability would have been crucial.

Delhi are currently in the fifth place in the IPL 2025 league table, with 13 points from 11 games.

As per a report in the Guardian, if DC reaches the final, then Starc could lose more than a third of his bidding price. He would lose at least Rs 3.85 crore even if DC fails to reach the IPL 2025 final.

IPL player contracts are reportedly based on pro-rata payments for the games they are available to play.

The report adds that his refusal to return could also bring an early end to his IPL career; however, at this moment, any such thought is nothing but conjecture.

Alyssa Healy shares Dharamsala scare

Starc’s wife and Australian cricketer Alyssa Healy had recently described the harrowing experience they had when the IPL match was called off in Dharamsala.

“It was a surreal experience. All of a sudden a couple of the light towers went out and we were just sitting there up the top waiting… we’re a large group of family and extra support staff and the next minute the guy who wrangles the group of us and gets us on the bus came up and his face was white,” Healy told The Willow Talk podcast.

“He was like, ‘we need to go right now’. Then (another) guy came out and his face was white and he grabbed one of the children and said, ‘we need to leave right now’. We were like, ‘what’s going on?’ We weren’t told anything. We had no idea. Next minute we are being shuffled into this room which was like a holding pen. All the boys were in there. Faf (Faf du Plessis) didn’t even have shoes on. We were all just waiting there looking stressed.

“I said to Mitch, ‘what’s going on?’ He said the town 60km away had just been smacked by some of the missiles so there was a complete blackout in the area. That’s why the lights were off because the Dharamsala stadium was like a beacon at that point in time.

“All of a sudden we’re crammed into vans and off we go back to the hotel. There was madness,” the wicketkeeper-batter added.
