India won the ICC Champions Trophy for a record third time after defeating New Zealand by four wickets in the final in Dubai on Sunday. Skipper Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer led the way as the Men in Blue chased down the 252-run target with four wickets and an over to spare.

Team India sailed through the ICC Champions Trophy unbeaten, defeating New Zealand by four wickets in a thrilling final to win the ‘Mini World Cup for a record third time. Rohit Sharma produced a captain’s knock, smashing 76 off 83 balls, while the middle-order batters Shreyas Iyer (48) and KL Rahul (34 not out off 33 balls) came to the rescue after a middle-order wobble as the Men in Blue chased down a tricky 252-run target set by New Zealand with an over to spare.

Besides the batters, Kuldeep Yadav (2/40) and Varun Chakravarthy (2/45) also chipped in with a couple of wickets each, the former getting the key wickets of the in-form Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson in successive overs to halt the Black Caps’ charge after a positive start.

The Men in Blue had been the most dominant team throughout the tournament, winning all five matches that they played in a repeat of their clinical display in the 2013 edition. They have also now won two ICC events in successive years, having won the T20 World Cup in June last year following a thrilling victory over South Africa in the final.

It wasn’t just the supporters at the Dubai International Stadium who erupted with joy following India’s victory – the entire nation celebrated the win, with Diwali-like scenes taking place all over for the second time in this tournament after their victory over Pakistan in the group stage.

With their triumph on Sunday, India are now the most successful team in the history of Champions Trophy with three titles. They have also won two ICC events in consecutive years, having won the T20 World Cup for a second time in June last year.
