India became the most successful team in Champions Trophy history after winning the tournament for a third time on Sunday, 9 March. Reuters

The 2025 ICC Champions Trophy concluded on Sunday with India and New Zealand, the two standout teams in the ninth edition of the tournament, playing out a cracker of a final in Dubai on Sunday . New Zealand had posted a competitive total on the board after India lost yet another ODI toss, finishing on 251/7 thanks to half-centuries from Daryl Mitchell (63) and Michael Bracewell (53 not out).

Rohit Sharma (76) and Shreyas Iyer (48) later played a key role in India’s successful chase, with KL Rahul (34 not out) later finishing things off in style to guide the Men in Blue to a four-wicket victory with an over to spare.

India and New Zealand had triumphed over Australia and South Africa respectively. While India chased down a steep-looking 265-run target set by two-time champions Australia with four wickets and 11 deliveries to spare, the Black Caps inflicted a 50-run defeat on the Proteas in the second semi-final the following day.

The tournament, however, turned out to be a disappointing one for hosts Pakistan, who were the defending champions and also had the home advantage. Their title defence ended with back-to-back losses against the two finalists in a space of four days, and they would bow out without a win after their final Group A  match against Bangladesh ended in a washout.

Two-time runners-up England too bowed out without a win, finishing at the bottom of Group B with a hat-trick of defeats – including in a high-scoring thriller against Afghanistan in Lahore. The Englishmen’s forgettable campaign was followed by Jos Buttler resigning as white-ball captain, lasting less than three years in the role.
