Surya had forged a solid second-wicket partnership with his deputy Shubman Gill, who was batting on 37 off 20 balls when rain returned the venue for the second time and ensured no further play were possible. The Men in Blue were sitting pretty at 97/1 in 9.4 overs after Australia captain Mitchell Marsh won the toss for the fourth time in as many matches against India.
