India captain Rohit Sharma was handed two early reprieves in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final against Australia at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Australia missed golden opportunities to dismiss Rohit within the first three overs, with both Cooper Connolly and Marnus Labuschagne putting down chances that could have turned the game in their favor.

Rohit gets two lifelines but fails to capitalise

The first let-off came in the second over when Nathan Ellis induced a false shot from Rohit. The Indian skipper attempted a cut on a short and wide delivery but mistimed it straight to backward point, where Connolly got both hands under the ball but failed to hold on.

Just an over later, Ben Dwarshuis nearly had Rohit again. The veteran opener, looking to go over the covers, mistimed his shot, sending the ball off the toe-end of the bat. Labuschagne, sprinting to his left from mid-off, dived full stretch but couldn’t complete the grab, bringing back memories of Travis Head’s stunning catch to dismiss Rohit in the 2023 ODI World Cup final.

Rohit was eventually dismissed by Connolly as the Aussie player trapped the Indian skipper in the 8th over. Rohit went upstairs for a review but replays confirmed that the ball would have hit the leg stumps. Earlier, Ben Dwarshuis provided Australia with their first breakthrough as Shubman Gill fell for a soft dismissal. Gill was sent back for 8 off 11 balls.

Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer are currently trying to rebuild India’s innings after the fall of two early wickets. India are still far away from their target of 265 runs.
