Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Reliance Foundation Chairperson Nita Ambani led the tributes from the front as the Indian women’s cricket team lifted its first World Cup trophy at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday, after beating South Africa by 52 runs in the final. India had lost in the 2005 and 2017 finals of the ODI World Cup, but brought an end to the long drought with a historic victory in front of home fans.
Despite rain delaying the start of the all-important final, a 50-over game was held as South Africa won the toss and opted to field first. Making a return to the squad due to injury to Pratika Rawal, Shafali Verma smashed 87 while Deepti Sharma added a valuable 58, helping India post 298/7.
In reply, South Africa made a blistering start and at 114/1 in 20 overs, they looked destined to win the trophy. But player of the match Shafali Verma turned the game on its head by dismissing Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp in quick succession. Skipper Laura Wolvaardt made a commendable 101, but a lack of support from the lower order saw the South Africans getting bowled out for 246 in 45.3 overs.
