The Indian government has ordered the suspension of former cricketer Shahid Afridi’s YouTube channel in India after the 48-year-old made disparaging remarks against the Indian army in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack. Shahid Afridi’s YouTube channel is the latest account of a Pakistani to be banned in India after former cricketers Shoaib Akhtar and Basit Ali’s channels were also shut down for Indian viewers .
Content creators on YouTube are paid based on the number of views their videos generate. The former Pakistani cricketers were running successful YouTube channels in India, which in turn resulted in comfortable incomes.
Shahid Afridi faces action from India on YouTube
In line with the Indian government’s policy after the Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in a loss of 26 lives , Afridi’s YouTube account was been taken down in India on Wednesday. The message from YouTube on his channel says it was suspended " because of an order from the government related to national security or public order."
Afridi had been one of the most vocal voices against India since the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir on 22 April. He accused India of shifting the blame to Pakistan and questioned the Indian Army for failing to protect its citizens.
“Even if a cracker bursts in India, they blame it on Pakistan. You have an 8 lakh-strong army in Kashmir, yet this happened. This means you are useless, not being able to provide security to people,” Afridi said on Pakistani news channel Samaa TV.
“It’s surprising that within an hour of the attack, their media turned into Bollywood. For God’s sake, don’t make everything Bollywood. I was astonished I was enjoying the way they were talking.
“I was saying, look at their thinking, and they call themselves educated. Two cricketers have played so much cricket for India. They have been ambassadors and top cricketers, yet they directly blame Pakistan,” he added.
