India are through to the semifinals of the ongoing T20 World Cup as they defeated West Indies on Sunday, March 1 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata to clinch the final spot for the last four stage.
Sanju Samson played a memorable knock of 97 not out to help India chase down their highest ever target in the T20 World Cups. Chasing 196, Samson’s highest T20 World Cup score, took India over the line with four balls still in hand. The innings also helped India qualify for the T20 World Cup semifinals for the fifth time in last six editions.
India now remain just two wins away from becoming the first team in the history of T20 World Cups to defend the title. The Men in Blue now face England in the semifinal which will be third straight meeting of both the teams in the semifinal stage of this tournament.
Below we take a look at all the previous times India have played semifinals in the T20 World Cup.
2007: India vs Australia
India faced the ODI world champions Australia in the semifinal of the inaugural T20 World Cup and came up triumphant with Yuvraj Singh playing an incredible knock of 30-ball 70. India, the eventual champions, scored 188-5 and stopped Australia at 173-7 to win the game by 15 runs.
2014: India vs South Africa
Seven years after winning the inaugural T20 World Cup, India reached semifinal again in 2014. R Ashwin (3/22) starred with the ball while Virat Kohli (72*) led with the bat as India chased down 173 to storm into the final.
2016: India vs West Indies
India reached another semifinal in the next edition but this time they tasted defeat. West Indies, the eventual champions, chased down 193 in the final over to break hearts of Indian fans.
2022: India vs England
Once again, India faltered in the semifinals. England absolutely thrashed India to chase down 169 with all 10 wickets intact and four overs still in hand. It is still one of India’s worst defeats in T20 World Cups.
2024: India vs England
Avenging their defeat of 2022, India now handed England a similar drubbing on their way to the title. England were bowled out for just 103 and India registered a thumping 68-run victory.
