India Squad for T20 World Cup Announcement LIVE Updates: What's changed for the Indian T20I team since the last World Cup?

For starters, the trio of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja have retired from Twenty20 Internationals, with Suryakumar Yadav succeeding Rohit as captain. Additionally, Rishabh Pant has also fallen down the pecking order in the shortest format, with Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma picked for the wicketkeeper-batter’s slot ahead of him in the 20-over format.

It’s also been more than a year since Mohammed Siraj represented India in the shortest format, and it’s likely to stay that way in the upcoming tournament. Additionally, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Yuzvendra Chahal have also been sidelined from the T20I side, with the latter no longer in the national selectors’ radar in any of the three formats.

India Squad for T20 World Cup Announcement LIVE Updates: How the fifth T20I against South Africa serves as an indicator of India's T20 World Cup plans

With Shubman Gill missing the T20I series finale against South Africa in Ahmedabad due to a toe injury, Sanju Samson not only opened alongside Abhishek Sharma, he also kept the wickets despite Jitesh Sharma’s inclusion in the XI.

With Samson smashing 37 off 22 balls and also putting up an impressive performance behind the stumps, it appears he might have the team management’s backing for the wicketkeeper’s slot over Jitesh heading into the T20 World Cup. Both players, however, are likely to be picked in the squad.

India Squad for T20 World Cup Announcement LIVE Updates: Will Shubman Gill remain India's vice-captain despite poor run?

Shubman Gill leads the Indian team in Tests as well as ODIs, meaning he certainly has the team management’s backing across formats and will likely remain the vice-captain despite his poor run with the bat in recent outings.

With Sanju Samson smashing 37 off 22 balls after playing as an opener in the fifth T20I against South Africa, there is a slight possibility that the selectors and the team management might be thinking about Gill’s place in the T20I setup.

India Squad for T20 World Cup Announcement LIVE Updates: Irfan Pathan weighs on teams to watch out for in the 2026 T20 World Cup

“India and Australia are clear favourites, but watch out for Afghanistan, and Group D looks intriguing with South Africa’s struggles against wrist-spinners. I’m especially keen on newcomers Italy in their debut and Nepal, who’ve already beaten West Indies and shown promise,” the former India all-rounder and JioStar expert said recently.

India Squad for T20 World Cup Announcement LIVE Updates: Robin Uthappa highlights key challenge for defending champions India in T20 World Cup

“India’s losses in tournament knockouts have been one-off pressure games where we’ve faltered after a strong start. Momentum at the right time is crucial, along with handling the law of averages. Form can be a concern, but big players step up in big moments, like defending 30/30 in the previous T20 World Cup through bowling and fielding. It all comes down to managing pressure in those decisive clashes,” says JioStar expert and former India batter Robin Uthappa.

India Squad for T20 World Cup Announcement LIVE Updates: Irfan Pathan weighs in on why defending the T20 World Cup title is so difficult

“Defending a T20 World Cup title is daunting, you’re rarely in the same form two years later, and rebuilding that team mindset is tough. Post-2024, three key players retired, thrusting us into transition, though our depth raises hopes of becoming the first home winners. Conditions evolve, pressures mount unlike our dark-horse 2007 run and by 2009, changed dynamics and lost confidence cost us despite prior experience,” the former India all-rounder said on the JioStar Press Room on Friday.

For the record, no team has successfully defended the T20 World Cup title in the history of the competition till date. No team has even reached the final as defending champions for that matter.

India Squad for T20 World Cup Announcement LIVE Updates: Current Indian team "extremely strong", says Irfan Pathan

“This Indian team is extremely strong in terms of quality and depth, with multiple players competing hard for every spot. Compared to past eras, the options are far better, which is why India has a great chance to defend the title. There will always be a few concerns with any side, including this one, but if this team executes its skills to potential, it will be very difficult to stop India from retaining the T20 World Cup,” former India all-rounder Pathan said on the JioStar Press Room ahead of the T20 World Cup squad announcement.

India Squad for T20 World Cup Announcement LIVE Updates: Robin Uthappa backs India to break the 'host nation jinx' at T20 World Cup 2026

No host nation has ever lifted the trophy in the 18 years that have gone by since the T20 World Cup first came into existence – Sri Lanka coming the closest in 2012.

Former India batter Robin Uthappa, however, notes that India had broken a similar curse in the ODI World Cup in 2011, and have what it takes to do the same in ICC’s showpiewce T20 event. ( READ MORE )

India Squad for T20 World Cup Announcement LIVE Updates: Will Harshit Rana get picked for India's T20 World Cup squad?

Harshit Rana has been representing India across formats ever since Gautam Gambhir was appointed India’s head coach in July last year. And while many have questioned the team management going out of its way to back him, the Kolkata Knight Riders pacer certainly has improved over the months. He had starred in India’s ODI victory over Australia in Sydney with a haul of 4/39. And in the Dharamsala T20I against South Africa earlier this week, he had chipped in with figures of 2/34.

It is safe to say that Rana will be included in India’s T20 World Cup squad, though his place in the playing XI will not be automatic due to the fact that India might lean more towards spinners in home conditions, as well as the fact that Arshdeep Singh is likely to be picked as the second frontline seamer after Jasprit Bumrah.

India Squad for T20 World Cup Announcement LIVE Updates: Will Rinku Singh be included in India's squad for the T20 World Cup?

Rinku had been included as a travelling reserve in last year’s T20 World Cup in the US and the Caribbean, and had faced just one delivery in the Asia Cup in September – hitting the winning boundary in the final against Pakistan in Dubai.

With the southpaw then getting ignored for the T20I series against South Africa, there are doubts as to whether he will even be considered for the upcoming mega event, which will be taking place on home soil in February and March.

India Squad for T20 World Cup Announcement LIVE Updates: Most contentious spots to get clarity at squad announcement

Announcing the squad nearly six weeks before the tournament is a clear signal from the BCCI – the Indian team should have clarity, stability, and no last-minute experiments. It also means the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand will act as a full-fledged dress rehearsal.

India Squad for T20 World Cup Announcement LIVE Updates: BCCI keen on giving players a free run in T20I series against New Zealand next month

By unveiling India’s squad for the T20 World Cup a month-and-a-half in advance, the BCCI intends to use the bilateral T20I series against New Zealand at home next month as a dress rehearsal of sorts, and not as an audition for World Cup hopefuls.

India’s squad for the New Zealand series, thus, isn’t likely to be any different from the one that will be defending the T20 world title in February and March.

India squad announcement for T20 World Cup LIVE: The Ajit Agarkar-led senior selection committee will be unveiling India’s squad for the T20 World Cup on Saturday, 20 December . In a departure from tradition in Indian cricket, the BCCI will be announcing India’s squad nearly two months in advance, with a five-match T20I series against New Zealand still a month away.

The Suryakumar Yadav-led squad isn’t expected to be too different from the side that had won the Asia Cup in September by winning all seven matches that it had played, including all three meetings against arch-rivals Pakistan.

Which means that Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill is set to continue as Surya’s deputy in the shortest format, and Jasprit Bumrah will continue leading the attack in addition to being a senior member of the leadership group.

There are several other spots that are also locked in at the moment – from Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order to to Hardik Pandya in the middle-order as well as in the role of a finisher. Tilak Varma is also an automatic choice and ideally, he will be walking in to bat at the No 3 spot.

Spotlight on Rinku vs Dube ahead of squad announcement

However, uncertainty over Abhishek’s opening partner, especially with Sanju Samson making a strong case for his selection during the fifth T20I against South Africa, means that Tilak might be asked to bat at No 4 or lower at the upcoming mega event with captain Surya possibly slotting in at No 5.

In such a scenario, it might get difficult for the team management to also include Jitesh Sharma as a back-up wicketkeeper and finisher in the XI in order to maintain the ideal balance in the XI.

There are similar debates over middle-order batter Rinku Singh and his inclusion in the squad, with the Kolkata Knight Riders star clashing with all-rounder Shivam Dube for a spot in the middle order. Pandya and spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel are automatic inclusions in the team with the latter being a floater – someone who can walk in at a higher spot depending on the match situation – and one of Rinku or Dube will get the nod.

As for the bowling department, Varun Chakravarthy is also an automatic inclusion while Arshdeep Singh is likely to open the bowling alongside Bumrah, with Harshit Rana likely to get picked as his back-up. Kuldeep Yadav had been the top wicket-taker in the Asia Cup, and is also likely to remain a key member of the side in the tournament that is taking place at home for only the second time.
