Indian Test captain Shubman Gill would have a new vice-captain as Ravindra Jadeja was anointed his deputy on Thursday by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the two-match series against the West Indies.
Jadeja was elevated to vice-captaincy in the absence of Rishabh Pant, who is still recovering from a fractured toe, while Karun Nair was dropped by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel. Devdutt Padikkal has been added to the Indian squad as Nair’s replacement and Dhruv Jurel has been named as the first-choice wicket-keeper. The backup wicket-keeper will be N Jagadeesan.
Bumrah included in India’s Test squad
Jasprit Bumrah is also a part of the squad amid rumours that the senior pacer could be rested to manage his workload, as there’s only a four-day gap between the Asia Cup 2025 final and the start of the first Test against West Indies.
Besides Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna are the other pacers, while Nitish Kumar Reddy is the seam-bowling all-rounder and Shardul Thakur has been dropped.
The spin department includes Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav besides Jadeja.
The first India vs West Indies Test will be played from 2 October in Ahmedabad, while the second Test will be played in New Delhi from 10 October.
It will be the second Test series for India in the new 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. It started for them with a 2-2 draw in the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England.
India are currently third in the WTC points table with 28 points and 46.67 percentage points. Australia and Sri Lanka lead the WTC points table with 100 and 66.67 percentage points, respectively. West Indies are yet to open their account, having lost three Tests to Australia earlier this year.
