Pakistan are expecting another handshake boycott from the Indian team, but this time in the ICC Women’s World Cup, which got underway on Tuesday in Guwahati. India won the tournament opener by 59 runs in a rain-impacted game and their next match is against Pakistan on Sunday.
The India vs Pakistan clash will be played at Colombo despite the Women In Blue being the hosts due to an agreement between the International Cricket Council (ICC), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that was struck earlier this year before the Champions Trophy 2025. As per the agreement, India and Pakistan will play their ICC tournament matches at neutral venues.
However, the focus this time would not just be on India’s travel to Colombo but also on whether Harmanpreet Kaur and Co will shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts. The Indian men’s cricket team boycotted handshakes against Pakistan in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2025. They did not shake hands in any of the three matches and the women’s team is also expected to do the same. But there’s no confirmation yet on the matter.
Pakistan expecting handshake boycott from India women
Meanwhile, a report in Telecom Asia Sport states that the Pakistan team manager, Hina Munawar, has also sought guidance from PCB on the women’s team’s stance, which makes it clear that they are expecting India to boycott handshakes with them.
It has also been reported that BCCI and PCB are yet to approach the ICC regarding the matter. Please note that there’s no ICC protocol regarding shaking hands with your opponents, but it has always been a tradition to greet the other team at the end of a game.
Harmanpreet was asked about the handshake saga before the World Cup started, but she refused to go into any details.
“Well, we can only control one thing which is playing cricket on the field and we are not thinking of other things. Because as cricketers, we can only control the things we have in our hand. But in other parts, I have zero control, and I don’t even take those things into my mind. We don’t even discuss those things in the dressing room. We are only here to play cricket and our focus is only on cricket,” Kaur said.
