India Test squad announcement for England Tour LIVE Updates: Rohit Sharma retires without having led the Indian team in a Test series in England

In his run as Test captain that spanned nearly three years, the ‘Hitman’ collected a series win in West Indies and helped India pull off a maiden Test victory in Cape Town to level a two-match series in South Africa. Rohit, who had announced his Test retirement on 7 May, bids the format goodbye without having ever led India in the five-day format in England.

He was supposed to captain India in the fifth Test of the 2021 Test series that got delayed to the summer of 2022 due to a COVID crisis, but ultimately did not play that game as he had tested positive for the virus. Pacer Jasprit Bumrah filled in as skipper and was in a position to collect a big win until England ‘Bazballed’ their way to a seven-wicket victory while chasing a steep target of 378.

India Test squad for England Tour LIVE Updates: Wil the wait for a new captain end today?

Nothing has been shared by the BCCI. The online media news is full of speculations that the Team India Test squad and the announcement of a new Test captain can come in this week. Some say it will come on Sunday, while others have indicated a much earlier deadline. While we wait, this live blog will bring you all the live updates on the matter.

India Test squad for England Tour LIVE Updates: The drama continues over who would be Team India’s next Test captain after Rohit Sharma’s retirement. It was reported earlier that Shubman Gill was the favourite to captain India on the England tour, however,  multiple media houses have now claimed that selectors are also interested in handing over the duty to Rishabh Pant or Jasprit Bumrah.

Who will be India’s new Test captain?

Besides the India captaincy, there’s also a lot of interest around who would come in as replacements for Rohit and Virat Kohli, after the two star batters retired from Test cricket earlier this month. Their retirements could open the door for Karun Nair’s return, while Sarfaraz Khan would be looking to make himself a permanent fixture in Team India’s middle-order.

While the answers are unknown at the moment, the Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir will certainly have a big say in the final decisions over the captain and the squad. Gambhir is now expected to have full control of the Test team after the exits of Rohit and Kohli, but he faces one of the toughest challenges of his career.

India have not won a single Test series in England since the 2007 tour and the upcoming five-match Test series that starts on 20 June could well prove to be a trial by fire for the new Test captain.
