India's Asia Cup dominance, the most successful team in tournament history

India are the most successful team in Asia Cup history. From their first win in 1984 to the latest triumph in 2023, India have consistently dominated the tournament. Ahead of the 2025 T20 Asia Cup in UAE, where Suryakumar Yadav will lead the team, let’s take a look at India’s glorious record.

India are the most successful team in Asia Cup history with eight titles to their name. Seven of these titles came in ODIs and one in T20Is. They have done better than Sri Lanka, who have six titles, and Pakistan with two. Over the years, India have shown strong performances and stayed at the top in Asian cricket, showing they are the team to beat in the tournament. AFP

The first Asia Cup in 1984 was held in Sharjah, UAE. India won the tournament by beating Sri Lanka and Pakistan in the round-robin matches. This was India’s first big success in the Asia Cup. That win started India’s journey to become the strongest cricket team in the Asia Cup. India won the Asia Cup again in 1988 in Bangladesh. They beat Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in the final. This was India’s second Asia Cup win.  AFP

In 1990-91, India defended their Asia Cup title by beating Sri Lanka again in the final. Pakistan did not play in that edition because of political problems. India won their third Asia Cup and showed why they are the favourites. Their win made them one of the strongest cricket teams in Asia. AFP

The 1995 Asia Cup was held in Sharjah. India beat Sri Lanka in the final for the third time in a row. This was India’s fourth Asia Cup title. With this triumph, India showed they could win again and again and stay the best team in Asia Cup history. India’s next title came in 2010, again against Sri Lanka. After this, the ICC announced that Asia Cup events would be played on a rotation basis between ODI and T20I formats. AFP

India won their first Asia Cup T20 title in 2016 in Bangladesh. They won all their matches, including the final against Bangladesh by 8 wickets. Shikhar Dhawan scored 60 runs in the final. India played smart cricket with strong batting and bowling and became first team to win the inaugural T20 Asia Cup. AFP

In 2018, India won the 50-over Asia Cup in the UAE by beating Bangladesh by 3 wickets in the final. They did not lose a single match. Shikhar Dhawan scored the most runs in the tournament, 342, and became Man of the Series. India showed that they are still the strongest team in the Asia Cup cricket. AFP

India won their 8th Asia Cup title in 2023 in Sri Lanka. They beat Sri Lanka by 10 wickets and bowled them out for only 50 runs. Kuldeep Yadav was the best player of the tournament. India played very well with both bat and ball and proved again why they are the top team in Asia Cup history. AFP

India have played in 10 Asia Cup finals and won eight of them. Suryakumar Yadav is going to captain this time after taking over the reins from Rohit Sharma. The 2025 edition is going to be held in the T20 format in the UAE. India’s first match is scheduled against the hosts on September 10. India will try and win their record ninth title.  AFP
