The T20 World Cup is set to witness a first on Sunday, one way or another. Either India become the first team in the history of the tournament to not only win a third title but to also lift the trophy on home soil as well as in consecutive editions, or New Zealand become the seventh team to win the tournament. The Men in Blue and the Black Caps have already achieved a unique feat ahead of Sunday’s blockbuster match, becoming the first teams in cricket history to face off in the final of an ICC event in all three formats.
Their journey to the final aren’t exactly the same either. India won all four matches in the group stage, suffered a comprehensive defeat at the hands of South Africa and then qualified for the knockouts after beating Zimbabwe and West Indies. Suryakumar Yadav and his men would then win a high-scoring thriller against England in the second semi-final at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
New Zealand, meanwhile, had finished second behind the Proteas in their group, and were left needing a favour from Sri Lanka for them to advance to the semis after their Super 8 fixtures against Pakistan and England ended in a washout and a narrow defeat respectively, though they did boost their chances with a sound thrashing of the Lankans.
And their semi-final victory couldn’t be more different from that of India, with the Kiwis restricting South Africa to 169/8 at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens before chasing it down with nine wickets and nearly eight overs to spare .
