India vs England live score, 1st Test: The transition in the Indian cricket team starts today (20 June, Friday) as a young team led by new captain Shubman Gill takes on England in the first Test of the five-match Test series at the Headingley Stadium in Leeds. Only three Indian captains have won a Test series in India and Gill is looking to become the fourth, but he knows the challenge is tough.
Gill faces baptism by fire at Leeds
The last time India won a Test series in England was almost two decades back in 2007 under the leadership of Gill’s former coach Rahul Dravid. Gill has been handed over the tough task of leading the team after the Test retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, while Jasprit Bumrah ruled himself out of the job. But Gill has already made a mark in his young career in international cricket, establishing himself across formats in the Indian team.
Now he will aim to establish himself as the leader of the team and supporting him from behind will be coach Gautam Gambhir, who has been asked to oversee this transition.
All eyes will also be on India’s batting order and who among Abhimanyu Easwaran, Sai Saudharshan and Karun Nair gets picked for the first Test at Leeds.
England are also undergoing a transition in the bowling department with James Anderson now retired. They have already announced the playing XI for the first Test against India at Leeds.
