The Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir has shared his thoughts on the chances of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup. Speaking to News18, Gambhir said that there is still a long way to go before the tournament and that the focus should now be on the upcoming T20 World Cup, which is just months away and is slated to be held in India.

Gambhir on Kohli and Rohit’s ODI future

“We still have a T20 World Cup before that, and that is again a huge tournament, which is going to happen in India in February-March. So, the entire focus at the moment, after England, will be on the T20 World Cup. And November-December 2027 is still two-and-a-half years away,” Gambhir said when asked about his plans for Kohli and Rohit.

Gambhir also said that performance is more important than age, suggesting that if the duo keeps doing well they may get picked no matter what age they are. “I’ve always said one thing, if you keep performing, age is just a number,” he added.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma haven’t played ODIs since India’s Champions Trophy win earlier this year. While they were a big part of that success, there is still no clarity on whether they will continue to be part of the team in upcoming white-ball tournaments after stepping down from both Tests and T20Is.

Both Kohli and Rohit stepped away from red-ball cricket earlier this month. While Rohit said that he will continue to be available for selection in ODIs, Kohli didn't give any hint on his 50-over future. However, it is expected that both these legends will play for India in the next ODI World Cup before retiring from international cricket completely.
