The hosts posted a massive total of 669 in the first innings, gaining a monumental lead of 311. In response, India lost two wickets in the first over. England captain Ben Stokes continued from where he left off on Day 3. He got to his 14th century and then launched an onslaught on India. Stokes and Brydon Carse added quick runs and took England to a monumental total of 669. Stokes was eventually dismissed at 141. Trailing by 311, India had a disastrous start as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan fell on consecutive deliveries bowled by Chris Woakes. Both perished without troubling the scorers and India were reeling at 0/2 after 1st over of their second innings. KL Rahul (87*) and captain Shubman Gill (78*) showed resolute with a positive intent. Both kept ticking the scoreboards and intermittently collected fours when width was offered to them. They held their nerves till the end and finished the day at 174/2 after 63 overs.own

Joe Root makes history

Root made history by becoming the second-highest run-scorer in Test cricket, going past legends like Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis, and Ricky Ponting. The only player ahead of him in the all-time Test run-scorers list is the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.

“Just one more to go. The way his career has gone over the last five years, there’s absolutely no reason why not,” former Australia captain Ricky Ponting said when asked if Root can become the all-time No. 1 scorer in red-ball cricket.

“He’s not a big one for landmarks, but I think that’s a pretty cool one, second highest test runs is incredible. I’m sure he knew what the number was (that he needed) but he’s not a guy who wants to shout about it,” England vice-captain Ollie Pope said.
