Delhi Capitals (DC) enter the Indian Premier League (IPL) Auction 2026 in Abu Dhabi on 16 December with a sense of clarity that has often eluded them. This is not a franchise starting over, but one looking to fine-tune a largely settled core after yet another season that promised more than it delivered. With Rs 21.80 crore left in the purse and eight slots remaining — five of them overseas — the task is clear; address specific gaps without disturbing the balance they briefly found during the first half of last season.

Delhi Capitals’ 2025 campaign under Axar Patel began with genuine promise. Five wins from their first six matches had them firmly on course for a deep playoff run. What followed, however, was a familiar unravelling — five defeats in the next eight games, a slide to fifth place, and yet another season ending with more questions than answers. The upcoming auction presents a narrow but critical window to finally address those recurring flaws.

Nitish Rana (traded in from RR), Kuldeep Yadav, KL Rahul, Mitchell Starc, Tristan Stubbs, Abishek Porel, Ashutosh Sharma, Axar Patel, Dushmantha Chameera, Karun Nair, Sameer Rizvi, T Natarajan, Tripurana Vijay, Vipraj Nigam, Mukesh Kumar, Ajay Mandal, Madhav Tiwari

IPL Auction 2026: DC squad analysis and major gaps

At the centre of this DC group sit KL Rahul, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav. Rahul provides structure at the top, Axar remains the all-round fulcrum and on-field leader, while Kuldeep continues to be Delhi’s most reliable wicket-taker through the middle overs. Mitchell Starc remains the headline bowling retention and Tristan Stubbs is clearly viewed as the middle-order batter around whom the future batting unit is being shaped.

The trade for Nitish Rana is particularly significant. It gives DC left-handed balance in the middle-order, IPL experience and the flexibility to reshuffle their batting order without destabilising it. Retaining younger Indian batters such as Ashutosh Sharma, Sameer Rizvi and Abishek Porel underlines a willingness to persist with domestic talents as future investments.

At the top, DC need a reliable opening partner for Rahul, moving on from the hit-or-miss returns of Jake Fraser-McGurk and with Faf du Plessis having opted out of IPL 2026. There is also a clear need for bowling depth, particularly with the injury histories of T Natarajan and Starc. Starc will enter IPL 2026 after a potentially heavy Ashes workload with Australia, while Natarajan has shown mixed form — operating largely in the lower 120 kph range in the Tamil Nadu Premier League and blowing hot and cold in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The release of Mohit Sharma, who has since retired, has further exposed gaps in the bowling attack.

In the batting department, DC may also consider an overseas middle-order option. Harry Brook’s brief stint ended with his replacement by Sediqullah Atal, and while Rana and Rizvi offer Indian depth, an overseas all-rounder or a specialist batter remains a viable alternative for balance.

Additionally, Delhi Capitals are in the market for an overseas wicketkeeper-batter; if that option can double up as an opener, it would be close to an ideal fit for their current squad composition.

IPL Auction 2026: DC’s top targets

Ben Duckett: Listed as a wicketkeeper-batter, the England opener fits neatly into Delhi Capitals’ plans. His aggressive intent at the top of the order would complement Rahul’s more measured approach, offering DC a balanced opening combination. With most franchises entering IPL 2026 with relatively settled top orders, Duckett is unlikely to feature high on the shopping lists of many teams, making him a realistic and potentially astute auction target for DC.

Akash Deep: An Indian fast-bowling option with international experience, Akash Deep offers a useful support role alongside Starc. Comfortable bowling in the powerplay as well as in the death overs, he brings the ability to swing the new ball and execute yorkers under pressure. His experience in domestic T20s and familiarity with subcontinental conditions make him a reliable option.

David Miller: The South African hard-hitter returns to the auction as one of the IPL’s most experienced finishers, with over 3,000 runs in the league. Known for thriving under pressure in the final overs, Miller’s calm temperament, game awareness, and ability to pace a chase remain highly valued. For Delhi Capitals, he could provide a much-needed reliable option at the death, an area where consistency has often been lacking.

Jacob Duffy: The New Zealand pacer has emerged as a compelling option following a strong year in white-ball cricket. With 35 wickets in 20 T20I innings in 2025, Duffy offers control, movement, and the ability to strike early. He could serve as an ideal backup for an injury-prone Mitchell Starc, providing Delhi Capitals with both depth and flexibility in their pace attack.

Matheesha Pathirana: The release of CSK’s dependable death-over specialist has caught the attention of many teams. Entering the IPL 2026 auction as one of the top death bowlers available, Pathirana is renowned for his consistent yorkers and ability to deliver in the final overs. After a quiet 2025 season, he is expected to bounce back. Delhi Capitals are likely to target him, but with a limited budget, several factors will need to align for them to secure his services.

Beyond these names, players such as Devon Conway, Quinton de Kock, Matthew Forde, Liam Livingstone and Jason Holder are also expected to feature on Delhi Capitals’ shortlist.

The IPL 2026 Auction gives DC management a chance to showcase their tactical acumen. With a limited purse and stiff competition, every pick must earn its place on the field. Make the right choices, and Delhi Capitals could finally turn potential into performance. The near-misses of the past could become a genuine title challenge.
