KL Rahul’s sparkling century for the Delhi Capitals on Sunday went in vain as Gujarat Titans thrashed Delhi Capitals by 10 wickets to become the first team to qualify for the Indian Premier League playoffs this year. Rahul remained unbeaten on 112 off 65 deliveries, becoming the first player in IPL history to score a century for three different franchises, but hardly got support from the other batters as DC posted 199/3 at the end of their innings.
Sai Sudharsan’s century (108 not out off 61 balls) ended up outshining that of Rahul as the Tamil Nadu captain shared an unbroken 205-run opening stand with captain Shubman Gill (93 not out off 53 balls), helping the Titans chase the target down with all 10 wickets intact and an over to spare. GT thus qualified for the playoffs for the third time in four seasons since making their debut in 2022.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings, who currently sit at the second and third spots on the points table with 17 points each, also secured their qualifications as a result.
How lopsided defeat against GT affects DC’s playoff chances
Despite their sharp decline this season, having won just two of their last eight games, the Axar Patel-led Capitals remain in the hunt for the IPL 2025 playoffs. And that’s mainly due to their fantastic start to the season in the form of four consecutive wins.
DC remain at the fifth spot on the points table for now with 13 points to their name and will remain at that spot even if Lucknow Super Giants defeat Sunrisers Hyderabad later on Monday. However, it also means that their upcoming match against five-time champions Mumbai Indians becomes something of a virtual quarter-final, given the Hardik Pandya-led side are just a point ahead at the fourth spot after playing the same number of matches.
If MI win Wednesday’s showdown against DC, they will become the fourth and final team entering the playoffs, as neither the Capitals nor the Super Giants will be able to catch up to their tally of 16 points, even if the latter win both of their remaining games.
