West Indies and Zimbabwe both were stuck in India since their Super 8 commitments at the T20 World Cup ended last Sunday. However, Zimbabwe players have started leaving while the Caribbean side is still stranded.

West Indies head coach Darren Sammy took to social media as his team continues to remain stranded in India due to airspace restrictions in the Gulf region which is a major international transit hub. West Indies were eliminated from the ongoing T20 World Cup on Sunday, March 2 but have not been able to fly back home.

The United States and Israel launched strikes across Iran last Saturday and since then airspace in multiple Gulf countries has been shut. Some restrictions have eased in the past few days but travel remains affected even now.

West Indies are among the teams that are stranded in India and the head coach’s post summed up the mood in the camp.

Sammy expresses frustration on X

West Indies played India in a must-win encounter last Sunday at the T20 World Cup. However, with the loss to India, the Caribbean side was eliminated. The players and support staff would have departed soon after that but currently they are in Kolkata, waiting for approval to fly amid the conflict.

“I just wanna go home,” Sammy posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, March 5.

Sammy, under whose captaincy West Indies won the 2012 and 2016 T20 World Cups, is currently the head coach of the team. Under his guidance, West Indies won all its group stages matches, including one against England. However at the Super 8s, West Indies lost to South Africa and India to get knocked out.

Zimbabwe players start to leave India

Zimbabwe players have started leaving India after they too were stuck in India amid the conflict. The Chevrons, who stunned former T20 World Champions Australia and Sri Lanka in the group stage, played their final Super 8 game on Sunday against South Africa in Delhi.

“Due to flight availability and revised routing, the squad will return to Harare in batches. The first group of players departed India today, Wednesday, while the final group is scheduled to leave on Friday afternoon,” it added.
