  • Denly struggled to cope with Malinga's slower ones, who was exceptional at the death. Isuru Udana also did brilliantly and the hosts did well to restrict the home side 13 short of where they would have loved to be. The wicket is a good one and with the outfield a touch wet, Sri Lanka can chase this down. It won't be easy though. Who will win the one-off T20I? Join us in a bit to find out.
  • Runs did continue to flow despite the wickets as Roy was tonking the ball all around the park. He was dropped not once, but twice, and he made Lanka pay. His entertaining innings came to an end just before rain intervened. There was a delay of around an hour but after the resumption, the visitors continued from where they left off. Moeen Ali played a handy cameo and Ben Stokes supported him well. 200 looked on the cards but once Ali fell, the runs dried up a touch.
  • England have posted a big first innings score. The home side did manage to pull things back in the end but the target is still a stiff one. After being put in to bat, the English openers came out all guns blazing. They scored runs at will. However, three quick wickets, two by Amila Aponso and a run out, brought Lanka back into the game.
  • 19.6 A couple to end the innings! Full and on the pads, Jordan flicks it through square leg for two. 10 from the last over and ENGLAND END WITH 187!
  • 19.5 OUT! Drags it on! Full and on middle, almost a yorker. Rashid swings, the ball takes the inside edge and hits the leg stump. Last ball to go, can Udana end it well? Chris Jordon comes out to face the last ball.
  • 19.4 Powers it down to long off for a run. Singles won't harm Sri Lanka.
  • 19.3 Excellent running! This is on the pads, Plunkett flicks it through square leg. They run the first one hard and now go for the second. The fielder throws it to the bowler who has a shy at his end but misses. Rashid was a goner had he hit.
  • 19.2 Another good shot but just a run. Rashid carves it over cover-point. 5 from the first two balls.
  • 19.1 FOUR! EDGY ONE! But England won't care. Ideal start to the last over for them. This was full and outside off, Rashid swings but gets an outside edge and the ball races away.
  • 18.6 Slower ball on middle, Plunkett tries to flick but misses. A dot to end a brilliant penultimate over. 6 runs and two wickets from it. 177/7
  • 18.5 FOUR! Hammered! Full and on middle, Plunkett with all his power, hits it down the ground and a boundary results. England would like a few more.
  • 18.4 No hat-trick but a dot. Those are gold dust at the moment. A yorker on middle, kept out.
  • Liam Plunkett is the next man in.
  • 18.3 OUT! Two-in-two for Malinga! He is on a hat-trick. A full toss, Stokes misses and the ball hits the middle of off stump. Ben Stokes walks back and this will make a difference of at least 10 runs to the final score.
  • 18.2 OUT! DENLY HOLES OUT! The slower ball does the trick. Full and on middle, Joe is way too early into the shot. Ends up lobbing it towards long on. Kusal Mendis there takes an easy catch. Good passage of play this for Sri Lanka. They are finishing off strong here. Adil Rashid is the next man in.
  • 18.1 This time goes for a seam up delivery. Ends up bowling a full toss. Denly flicks it towards square leg. De Silva there dives to his right and saves a couple for his side.
  • Lasith Malinga to bowl his final over.
  • 17.6 So six singles in the over! Brilliant from Udana. Denly makes room and hits it to sweeper cover. 171/5
  • 17.5 Again, only a single. A very full ball, Stokes swings but once again the ball does not meet the middle. It goes off the inner half towards deep mid-wicket for a run.
  • 17.4 So does the 4th ball as Denly jams it out to long off for a run.
  • 17.3 Stokes takes a step down and swings but the ball goes off the inner half towards deep mid-wicket for a run. So the first half of the over has gone Lanka's way.
  • 17.2 Slwoer ball, Denly waits and then guides it to point for a run.
  • 17.1 A low full toss to begin with. Not easy to hit those away. Stokes plays it down to long off for a run.
  • 16.6 FOUR! 13 from the over and three boundaries from it! Once again steps out of the crease and flicks it into the gap of the mid-wicket region. 165/5
  • 16.5 The batsman has flicked the ball off his pads.
  • 16.4 FOUR! Back-to-back boundaries for Denly. This one is more fortunate. He steps down the track and swings but he gets a top edge over backward point and into the fence.
  • 16.3 FOUR! Smashed! This should get Denly going! Dances down the track and hits it hard over the bowler's head.
  • 16.2 Now a dot as Denly chops it back to the bowler.
  • 16.1 Shortish on middle, the batsman pull it to deep mid-wicket for a run.
  • 15.6 A single to end the over. Only two from it, brilliant from Malinga. 152/5
  • 15.5 Only a single as it is hit towards covers.
  • 15.4 Slower length ball this time and Denly once again misses it. 4 dots in a row.
  • 15.3 The batsman has done well to keep that yorker at bay.
  • 15.2 Another dipping slower ball full toss. Denly finds the man at covers.
  • 15.1 A brilliant delivery that! The dipping yorker outside off, Denly is completely foxed as he gets beaten. It goes agonizingly close past the off pole.
  • Lasith Malinga is back on.
  • 14.6 Nicely played! Plays the reverse sweep but hits it fine on the off side for a couple. 150/5
  • 14.5 Hit through covers for a run.
  • 14.4 Flicks it with the angle through mid-wicket for a run.
  • 14.3 Played to mid-wicket region by the batsman. The batsmen have run through for a single.
  • Joe Denly walks out to the middle.
  • 14.2 OUT! TIMBER! Moeen Ali's cameo comes to an end. This is bowled quicker and around middle, Ali goes for the heave across the line but misses to see his stumps get disturbed. Half the side back in the hut for England. Sri Lanka need to keep taking wickets to stop the run flow.
  • 14.1 FOUR! Once again dances down the track and smashes it past the cover fielder. Long off runs to his right but can't get to it.
  • Dhananjaya de Silva comes into the attack.
  • 13.6 Slower ball on the fuller side, it is hit down to long on for a run. 141/4
  • 13.5 SIX! Another one! This is hit with brute power. Short and around off, Ali stands tall and pulls it over the mid-wicket fence. Back-to-back maximums.
  • 13.4 SIX! How easy was that? On the pads, Ali nonchalantly flicks it over the square leg fence for a biggie. He is dealing in maximums.
  • 13.3 In the air... but safe! A short ball outside off, Stokes tries to pull but gets a top edge towards third man. The fielder ther comes running in but fails to get to it. A run taken.
  • 13.2 On the shorter side, the ball skids off the surface. Stokes goes to pull but is hit high on the pads.
  • 13.1 Down the leg side, it is flicked to fine leg for a run.
  • Thisara Perera is into the attack.
  • 12.6 Uses his feet again and flicks it towards deep mid-wicket for another single. End of a good over for England. 10 from it. 126/4
  • 12.5 The googly, Stokes makes room and slaps it through covers for a run.
  • 12.4 Another swing but this time the ball goes off the inner half through mid-wicket for a run.
  • 12.3 SIX! Top shot! USes his feet, gets to the pitch of it and with ease lofts it over the long on fence.
  • 12.2 Loopy ball on off, Ali finds covers with his drive.
  • 12.1 Stokes dances down the track and hits it hard to long off. Only for a run.
  • Lakshan Sandakan to bowl out.
  • 11.6 This is full again on off, Stokes hits it hard down the ground to long off for a run. 116/4
  • 11.5 Fires it on the pads, the batsman works it through mid-wicket for a single.
  • 11.4 Dances down the track and flicks it to deep mid-wicket fora run.
  • 11.3 Tosses it up on off, Stokes finds covers with his drive.
  • We are back. Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali will continue their innings and Kamindu Mendis will continue his over.
  • Good news folks! The rain has stopped and we will at 2100 local. Also, no overs have been reduced.
  • So the umpires have called for the covers as they feel the rain has gotten heavier. Let us hope the delay isn't a long one.
  • 11.2 SIX! Huge! Slightly short and Stokes has picked the length early. He sends it into the stands for a biggie.
  • 11.1 Flatter on off, the batsman punches it back to the bowler.
  • 10.6 OUT! Snicko shows a spike and that is the end of Roy's innings! Sri Lanka finally hang onto one. Sandakan gets his man. It is short and outside off, Roy goes for the cut but the ball seems to have taken the bottom edge and into the keeper's hand. The players appeal and the umpire raises his finger. Roy after a chat goes for the review. Replays roll in and it shows there was an edge. Jason has to walk back after playing a good knock. 107/4
  • Have Sri Lanka got Roy? The umpire has given it out caught behind. Roy has reviewed it.
  • 10.5 SIX! Back-to-back maximums and Roy is making full use of the lifes he has got. This time he goes downtown. It is off the middle and it goes all the way.

  • 10.3 Stokes comes down the track and it is bowled on his pads. He tries to flick but misses to get hit on the pads. The ball lobs on the leg side and the batsmen run a leg bye.
  • 10.2 FOUR! Short and wide and it has been cut away through point for a boundary.
  • 10.1 Eased through mid on for a run.
  • 9.6 Driven through mid off by the batsman. They pick up a single. Fifty up for Roy, he is making Sri Lanka pay here. 89/3
  • 9.5 Another chance goes abegging. This was the toughest chance of the lot though. Roy once again tries to go big but he ends up slicing it towards sweeper cover. Mendis there comes running in, dives but does not get to it. A couple taken.
  • 9.4 SIX! A gift and it has been put away! A full toss on the pads, Roy hits it over the square leg fence for a biggie.
  • 9.3 Stokes now hits it through covers for another run.
  • 9.2 The batsman has driven it through mid off. The batsmen have run through for a single.
  • 9.1 FOUR! This is what happens if you drop quality players. This is short and wide outside off, Roy slaps it through covers and a boundary results.
  • 8.6 A huge appeal but not give. That was very close. Tosses it up on the pads, straightens a touch. Stokes goes for the sweep but misses. He is hit on the pads. The players appeal but the umpire shakes his head. Hawk Eye later on shows three reds. Sri Lanka have missed a trick here. 74/3
  • 8.5 DROPPED AGAIN! You have to believe it is Roy's day today. He tries to go downtown this time but only gets height and not the distance. Shanaka there settles under it but does not take it.
  • 8.4 SIX! ALL THE WAY! This time the slog sweep has been hit well and goes all the way over the fielder.
  • 8.3 Driven towards the mid off region. One run added to the total.
  • 8.2 In the air... dropped! Samarawickrama is the culprit. How costly is this going to prove now? This was a sitter. Tossed up around middle, Roy goes for the slog sweep but the ball turns away and takes the top edge. Goes high up in the air towards deep mid-wicket. SS there settles under it and spills it. The batsmen take a run.

  • 6.4 A little too wide outside off, left alone.
  • 6.3 Flatter on off, Roy pushes it back to the bowler.
  • Ben Stokes walks out to the middle.
  • 6.2 OUT! RUN OUT! Morgan the man who in-form is walking back. A huge mix up there. Morgan went for the reverse sweep but the ball takes the top edge and goes on the bounce to the short third man fielder. Roy sets off for a run and Morgan sees that late. He then goes for it. It is too late till then as Malinga throws it to the bowler who hits the stumps at his end. England losing their way a little here. They were 41 for 0 and now are 60 for 3.
  • 6.1 A drag down outside off, Roy slaps it past covers. Does not find the gap and the man in the deep keeps it down to one.

The player appeals and the umpire raises his finger. Hales walks upto his partner and has a chat but they don't review. Now then, replays show that was missing the leg pole. He tries to punch it but the ball sticks in the surface. He ends up pushing it towards covers where Chandimal takes an easy catch. The dangerous Buttler departs but he along with Roy have gotten England off to a flier. Sri Lanka will now look to bring things under control.
  • 3.1 FOUR! Just over the leaping Perera! Buttler uses his feet and lofts it over the bowler's head. Perera at mid off is quite straight but the ball goes over him. Another over starts with a boundary.

The players appeal and the umpire after a chat take it upstairs. The soft signal is not out and it remains like that as Roy did not change his direction.

  • 1.4 Flatter on off, it is pushed to mid off.
  • 1.3 Driven through the covers by the batsman. The batsmen have run through for a single.
  • 1.2 FOUR! JUST OVER! Back-to-back boundaries for Roy. He brings the reverse sweep out but does not connect extremely well. It goes just over the leaping Mendis at point and into the fence.
  • 1.1 FOUR! Roy goes after him as well! He makes room and smashes it over the bowler's head for another boundary.
  • Amila Aponso to bowl from the other end.
  • 0.6 FOUR! 16 from the first over! England are off to a flier here. Buttler is the man this time. He gets off the mark with a cracking boundary. Full and around off, he plants his front foot forward and caresses it through the off side. 16/0
  • 0.5 Good delivery! Another slower one on middle, Roy works it around the corner and takes a single.
  • 0.4 FOUR! 11 runs already from the first over! A low full toss on the pads, easy pickings for Roy as he flicks it through square leg and the ball races away.
  • 0.4 Another slower one but this is too wide outside off, left alone. The umpire wides it.
  • 0.3 A trademark Malinga response. Goes for the slower ball on off, Roy defends it out.
  • 0.2 SIX! What a way to get off the mark. It is just the second ball he is facing and he dances down the track and whacks it over the long off fence for a biggie.
  • 0.1 Good start there by Malinga. Hint of swing for him as he lands it on a length around off, it is kept out.
  • Done and dusted with the National Anthems and the players now make their way out to the middle. Jason Roy and Jos Buttler are the openers for England. The former will be on strike and he will face Lasith Malinga who will start the proceedings for Sri Lanka. Here we go...
  • Eoin Morgan says they too wanted to bowl first due to the weather. Admits they were poor in the last game but they have had enough time to prepare for this game. States the T20I game is also important as it is a chance to represent the country. informs Joe Denly is back in the team.
  • Sri Lankan skipper, Thisara Perera, says the pitch looks a touch dry and they would look to keep them to a low score. Mentions they want to give their 100 percent in the game. Informs they are playing 7 batsmen and 4 bowlers.
  • Toss - Sri Lanka win the toss and they will bowl first. Kamindu Mendis will be making his debut for them.
  • Time for the only T20I between England and Sri Lanka. It is the Lankans who have momentum on their side as their side after they won the last ODI. They would want to carry forward the momentum and win the only T20I. It will also be interesting to see if England have recovered from their drubbing of the last game. However, a new format and one in which they are surely a force to reckon. Sri Lanka though won't go down without a fight. Let us hope we witness a cracking encounter. Welcome to the coverage.

Sri Lanka Vs England Live Score (T20) Ball by Ball Commentary

  • Normally, in today's age, one does not see one-match series between two top sides. But England and Sri Lanka perhaps had only that much time to squeeze in this match (or series). We now have a change of format, with the Test series coming up. It is a 3-match one, with the first game scheduled to begin in Galle, on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at 1000 local (0430 GMT). It has been a tri-series so far, with the third team choosing the heavens as its modus operandi. Hopefully, it is a good contest. Do join us for that. Till then, ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
  • Victorious England captain, Eoin Morgan, believes that tonight he witnessed considerably improvement in every facet of the game. Is high of praise for his batting unit for keeping the run flow coming in spite of losing wickets. Is proud of his bowlers for doing well with the wet ball. Has an extra word of praise for Joe Denly, especially since he has come back to the national side after 9 years. On being asked about the decision to give him the new ball, Morgan says that he has been following Denly's progress in county cricket and hence the confidence. On England's overall progress, Eoin believes that he is currently leading one of the world's best sides at the moment, but would like to see more consistency. Asked about whether he gained anything substantially from this rain-hit series, Morgan believes that there are always things to learn and this series too, provided plenty of such learnings.
  • Sri Lankan captain, Thisara Perera, says that had Sri Lanka not lost early wickets, it would have been a different result. On the poor fielding (they dropped 4 catches), Thisara cites it down to weather conditions, though does not want to make it as an excuse. On being consumed by spin, a foxed Thisara reckons that Sri Lankan batsmen play spin the best but tonight it was not good at all. On pushing himself down the batting order, Perera says that he just pushed better batsmen at the top. Is confident that the Lankan side is going in the right direction.
  • JOE DENLY IS THE MAN OF THE MATCH. On being asked about how does it feel on having had to wait for 8 years to represent England, Denly says that it has indeed been a long time but he is proud of the moment, citing that there is nothing better than it. On his performance, he says that the surface was tricky but he somehow managed to get his shots away. On his bowling, he suggests that he had confidence in his leggies and just did routine stuff. On being asked about his chances to make it to the Test squad, a modest Denly says that his job is just to make the most of the opportunities he gets.
  • One wonders what would have happened had Jason Roy's chances been taken - even one of them. He was put down on 20 by Udana, then on 34 by Samarawickrama and finally on 41 by Shanaka, before being eventually dismissed for 69. Please stay tuned for the presentation.
  • Joe Denly was the surprise pick, with 4 wickets but the real star of the bowling was Adil Rashid, with a 3-fer. Jordan was economical, with 2 scalps. Sri Lanka, well, just tried to hit hard, had a few good shots but ended up missing more than hitting. Thisara Perera got a half century for the records.
  • Comfortable win for England. Jason Roy's 69 set things up, albeit he was dropped thrice while with the ball, the visitors were just too good. The yorkers found their mark while the slower ones foxed the batsmen.

  • 18.5 Full on middle, lofted towards long on. Starts to run, then goes back.
  • 18.4 SIX! Not a bad shot. On the pads, Perera swings it into oblivion over square leg! 45 more needed from 8 balls.

  • 16.2 A full toss, a high one, pushed towards long on for a single.

  • Lasith Malinga comes in at number 10, replacing Aponso. Tom Curran comes on as well.
  • 15.6 OUT! Bowled! Lock, stock and barrel! A terrific yorker from Jordan. Right at the base of the stumps and at a good pace too. Amila is very late in getting his bat down and the Zinc bails glow. So after that six, it has been 1, W, 0, W. 119/8
