  • So, a stiff target set in front of the away side. The boundaries are small, but with the wicket a touch on the slower side and turning, it won't exactly be an easy task by any means. Having said that, if there is one team you'll back to gun this down then it's England. A good start will be key for them. Join us on the other side of the break for all the action.
  • Not much to mention about the English bowling. They were highly inaccurate with their lines and were equally let down with some sloppy fielding from the rest (particularly Chandimal's dropped chance when he was on 6). Not enough wickets came at timely intervals and the runs just kept leaking. You could say Adil Rashid was the pick of the lot, as he ended with figures of 1/52.
  • Finally, the batting clicks for Sri Lanka and they put up their highest-ever total against England in ODIs. It all began with the fast start Dickwella and Samarawickrama gave the hosts. Their 137-run set the tone which Chandimal and Mendis followed up very well with a century stand of their own. All scored superb fifties, with Dickwella missing out on a ton by 5 runs. Some late hitting from Akila and de Silva saw Sri Lanka cross the 360-run mark.
  • 49.6 SIX! Finishes things off in style. What a way to end the innings. Full and attacking the stumps, right in the slot and de Silva has no qualms about going big for this. Clears his front leg and smokes it high over long on for half a dozen. SRI LANKA FINISH ON 366/6!
  • 49.5 Dropped! Sums up England's time in the field out there. Short ball dug in, Akila backs away and mistimes the slap towards cover. Moeen Ali moves to his right but puts down a simple catch. Single taken by the batsmen.
  • 49.4 SIX! Just about clears the rope! Back of a length, Akila goes back deep inside the crease and pulls it over mid-wicket. Gets a lot of bat on it and earns a maximum to his name.
  • 49.3 Fuller and slower, just outside off, lofted through the covers for one more.
  • 49.2 Too far out but no wide given. Well outside off, it across the tramline, de Silva goes a long way across to attempt the paddle scoop but misses.
  • 49.1 On the shorter side of the length, Akila slaps the pull down towards wide long on. Single to the total.
  • 48.6 The batsman rocks onto the back foot and punches the ball. One run collected. The scoreboard keeps on ticking for Sri Lanka. 351/6
  • 48.5 Short in length, pulled in front of square leg for a single. The 350 comes up.
  • 48.4 Too straight in line, worked behind square leg for a run.
  • 48.3 FOUR! Gave himself some room and smashed this away. Back of a length angling away, around off, Akila backs away and hammers it through covers for a boundary.
  • 48.2 Back of a length on middle and leg, de Silva stays leg side and mistimes the heave towards mid-wicket. One run to the total.
  • 48.1 Straightening up after landing around off, Akila plays it wide of point for a single.
  • 47.6 Coming in on leg, goes off the pads and falls on the leg side. A leg bye is taken. 342/6
  • 47.5 De Silva drives this full delivery through mid on and gets to the other end.
  • 47.4 Yorker speared in on the stumps, Dhananjaya digs it out back down the track.
  • 47.3 The batsman opens the face of the bat and helps it to third man. The batsmen have run through for a single.
  • 47.2 Short of a length outside off, dabbed square to point for a single.
  • 47.1 FOUR! A family affair. One brother letting the other down. Slower short ball outside off, de Silva runs it down towards short third man. Sam there runs to his left but can't stop it. Tom clearly lets his frustration be known. A boundary results.
  • 46.6 Full toss outside off, hit to sweeper cover to keep strike. 334/6
  • 46.5 Akila drives this fuller delivery towards mid on and gets off strike.
  • 46.4 Makes room before the ball is even bowled. Length ball on off, but Dhananjaya can't beat the mid off fielder with his smack. Does get a single, though it should have been a boundary.
  • 46.3 Fraction straight in line, on a length, flicked through square leg. Single collected.
  • 46.2 Slightly shorter, into the body, pulled down towards fine leg with a little swivel for one run.
  • 46.1 Yorker fired in on the stumps, de Silva does well to bring his bat down in time and dig it out.
  • 45.6 Good over from Tom Curran. 2 wickets and just 2 runs off it. Slower one outside off, de Silva taps it to point and changes ends. 329/6
  • 45.5 No hat-trick, but three dots from Tom. Back of a length on off, Dhananjaya defends it down in front of covers.
  • Akila Dananjaya is out next and he will face the hat-trick ball.
  • 45.4 OUT! Now Thisara holes out and Tom Curran is on a hat-trick. Wrong wicket at the wrong time, especially after Chandimal's dismissal. Short of a length, Perera stands back and muscles this over mid-wicket. Doesn't get the desired elevation on it and hits it towards Alex Hales at deep mid-wicket, who takes a good catch moving to his left.
  • Dhananjaya de Silva to be the new man in.
  • 45.3 OUT! Chandimal departs! A good knock from the Sri Lankan skipper comes to a close. Tom lands it short and takes the pace off this one. Chandimal looks to heave this over mid-wicket but there's no pace to work with. He's a bit early into the shot and holes out in the deep to Jason Roy who makes no mistake. This is a big breakthrough for England, a timely one and it will surely take away at least 15-20 runs from Sri Lanka's eventual score.
  • 45.2 Back of a length on middle and leg, whacked to deep mid-wicket for a run.
  • 45.1 Starts off with a bumper and takes Thisara by surprise. He can't connect with the pull as a result.
  • Tom Curran to bowl again.
  • 44.6 The batsman guides it to third man. One run added to the total. 327/4
  • 44.6 Wide. That's a wide. Full and outside the tramline. The umpire signals a wide.
  • 44.6 Wide. Marginal call. Full outside off, Chandimal is seen making room by going down the leg side and then he makes a leave. Wood looks at the umpire in disbelief, Buttler has a wry smile on his face.
  • 44.5 Slow, full on off, milked through mid-wicket. Some good running gets them two runs.
  • 44.4 Good ball. Length and wide of off pole. Chandimal makes room and looks to carve this but connects with thin air.
  • 44.3 Another short ball down leg, Perera fails to get it away properly as he attempts to pull. Drags it uppishly behind square leg and just wide of short fine leg. A single taken.
  • 44.2 Good short ball. Digs this one short down leg. Thisara ducks under it. No wide. One for the over for Wood.
  • 44.1 Full and wide outside off, played to backward point for one.
  • 43.6 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat. Adil Rashid is done for the day, his figures read 10-0-52-1. 321/4
  • 43.5 SIX! Tosses this one up on middle and leg, Thisara's eyes light up and he slogs this over mid-wicket. When he hits them they stay hit.
  • 43.4 Flatter ball on leg, hit back to the bowler.
  • 43.3 Slow short ball outside off, Chandimal pulls it through mid-wicket. Roy in the deep keeps it to one.
  • 43.2 FOUR! Leg spinner pitched outside off, Chandimal drives it along the turf past the bowler for a boundary.
  • 43.1 Tossed up ball on leg, hits it to long on to give his skipper the strike. Smart batting.
  • 42.6 Full and outside off, driven superbly to covers but straight to the fielder. Either side of him would have been a boundary. 309/4
  • 42.5 Short ball outside off, Perera pulls it through mid-wicket for just one.
  • 42.4 Length ball over the stumps, Chandimal cuts it through covers for one.
  • 42.3 Back of a length ball on off, tapped to the off side and gets to the other end.
  • 42.2 Full on leg, the batsman delicately works it fine down the leg side. The batsmen have run through for a single.
  • 42.1 FOUR! Strays down leg, Chandimal just helps it fine to the fine leg boundary.
  • Mark Wood is back to bowl at the death.
  • 41.6 Another googly. Spins away from Thisara who gets a leading edge to the off side. 301/4
  • 41.5 Googly around off, driven to mid off to give his partner the strike.
  • 41.4 Tossed up ball in line of the stumps, Chandimal blocks it out.
  • Thisara Perera walks out to bat.
  • 41.3 OUT! Tossed up ball on middle and off, spins away from Shanaka. Dasun looks to slog this over mid-wicket. Knew straightaway he was in trouble when he hit it as he didn't time it well. Roy at cow corner takes a good catch. Adil was brought on to take a wicket and he does so. Will this cause damage to Sri Lanka's scoring rate?
  • 41.2 Given air down leg, Chandimal flicks it away behind square to bring up the 300 for his team. What will their target be?
  • 41.1 Short ball on off, timed nicely through mid-wicket for two. Very good running and some smart batting.
  • Adil Rashid to bowl his 9th over.
  • 40.6 Yorker on middle and leg, Chandimal digs it out over the bowler's head for one. 297/3
  • 40.5 Slower bouncer outside off, Dinesh looks to cut it but cannot make any connection.
  • 40.4 Back of a length ball on off, Chandimal plays it with a straight bat.
  • 40.3 SIX! HUGE! Dug in from Plunkett on leg, Chandimal makes room and pulls this over mid-wicket for a maximum. What a hit, son!
  • 40.2 The batsman plays a pull shot to this short delivery to the leg side. One run added to the total.
  • 40.1 FOUR! Short, wide and hammered. Cutter outside off, Shanaka cuts it through covers for a boundary.
  • Powerplay 3 signalled. A maximum of 5 fielders will be allowed outside the 30-yard circle till the end of the innings.
  • 39.6 Played through mid-wicket by the batsman. The batsmen have run through for a single. 285/3
  • 39.5 FOUR! Picks the slower one and hits this straight, really straight. A back-of-the-hand slower one, full in length, Shanaka bangs it over the bowler's head and sends it across the boundary line.
  • 39.4 Ahead of a length, around off, driven uppishly back past the bowler, towards long off for a single.
  • 39.3 Smacks this down towards wide long on. Takes a single for doing so.
  • 39.2 Short of a length angling back in, a mistimed heave from Dasun clears the infield over mid-wicket. Roy out in the deep moves to his left to cut it off and keep the batsmen down to two.
  • 39.1 FOUR! Strays it on the pads, Shanaka flicks it ever so well through backward square leg for a boundary.
  • 38.6 Full and angling in on middle and leg, flicked through mid-wicket for a run. 272/3
  • 38.5 Back of a length outside off, Shanaka rises and punches it square towards point. Can't beat Moeen Ali there.
  • 38.4 Shaping in from a good length, Shanaka defends it from within the crease.
  • 38.3 Rising off the surface from a good length, Chandimal punches it to covers and takes off. There is a missed shy at the bowler's end, which if connected, would have seen Dinesh walk back.
  • Dasun Shanaka walks into the middle next.
  • 38.2 OUT! GONE! Mendis has been dismissed. Was going for the quick runs and has departed in search of it. A good knock comes to an end. Length ball on the stumps, the batsman looks to slog it over the mid-wicket boundary. Gets a lot of height, not enough distance on it and this time Ben Stokes takes it well as he comes running in from the deep. An excellent stand of 102 is brought to an end by Plunkett. Bowling change does the trick.
  • 38.1 Short of a good length outside off, Mendis rises on his toes and cuts it past the diving point field. Joe Denly (sub) out in the deep moves to his left, covers good ground and stops it with a dive. The batsmen take two.
  • Liam Plunkett back into the bowling attack.
  • 37.6 Driven through mid on by the batsman. One run added to the total. 16 off the over. Big one for Sri Lanka. 268/2
  • 37.5 SIX! 12th ODI fifty for Kusal Mendis and what a scintillating way to bring it up. Gets it on the pads and lofts it very well over square leg. Wow. Looking in good touch, he'll want to go on and finish the innings with a bang.
  • 37.4 SIX! He's finding the sweet spot of the bat here. Another terrific shot from Kusal Mendis. Full length delivery on off, Mendis gets under this one and lofts it over long off for half a dozen.
  • 37.3 Good length delivery just outside off, pushed tamely from inside the crease wide of long off. One run to the total.
  • 37.2 Too straight in line and full in length, pushed back down towards mid on for another one.
  • 37.1 Takes the pace off this one, on leg stump. Worked down in front of mid-wicket for a single.
  • Tom Curran called back on.
  • 36.6 SIX! Right in the slot and that's outta here! Full and slow, in line of the stumps, Mendis clears his front leg and smokes it straight back over the bowler's head. Clears the fence and gets a biggie to his name. 252/2
  • 36.5 The batsman has worked it off his pads behind square on the leg side. They pick up a single.
  • 36.4 FOUR! Fifty for Dinesh Chandimal, his 22nd in ODIs and what a way to bring it up. Short of a good length on the body, Chandimal just helps this through backward square leg, beating the man in the deep.
  • 36.4 Wide! Short and shooting off the deck, down leg as well. Chandimal lets it be. Wide signalled.
  • 36.3 Back of a length outside off, kept out off the back foot.
  • 36.2 Short and down the leg side, Mendis tries to whack this across the fine leg fence but mistimes it aerially to square leg. A single results.
  • 36.1 Angling in on middle and leg, whipped through mid-wicket hard for a couple of runs.
  • Ben Stokes to continue...
  • 35.6 No run. 237/2
  • 35.5 Good length delivery outside off, hit firmly through covers for a run.
  • 35.4 Mendis opens the face of the bat but finds the short third man fielder.
  • 35.3 Outside off, played down to point, not in the gap.
  • 35.2 SIX! That has gone all the way! Curran serves a back of a length delivery around off, Mendis gets across the stumps and plays a pick-up kind of a pull shot. Makes fine connection and sends it flying over square leg for a maximum.
  • 35.1 Mendis has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
  • 34.6 Taps it down on the leg side and they steal another run under mid-wicket's nose. Frustrating continues for Stokes. 6 from this over. 230/2
  • 34.5 Sharp single! Very risky. A length ball outside off, Chandimal forces it out towards mid off and scampers across the pitch looking for a run. His partner though is ball-watching initially. But when Mendis realized that his skipper is in the middle of the pitch, he responds and rushes across to the other end. Liam Plunkett is lazy to get his throw away towards the keeper. Buttler (on the run) collects it and breaks the stumps but Kusal is safely in. A better throw would have made things interesting. Stokes once again isn't impressed.
  • Third man going a bit finer. Mid on and mid off are up.
  • 34.4 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
  • 34.3 Good length delivery outside off, Chandimal punches it on the up and it speeds through covers. Wood is a bit slow to get around the ball in the deep and they pinch the second run. Stokes is not happy with the effort.
  • 34.2 Width on offer outside off, Mendis dabs it to third man and rotates the strike.
  • 34.1 Back of a length delivery outside off, Chandimal taps it down towards point and the non-striker comes running out of the crease in search of a run. He is sent back as Roy scores a direct hit at the bowler's end. But by then, Mendis is safely home. Now, the ball deflects off the stumps and they cross for a run.
  • 33.6 Full and on middle, Chandimal pushes it down through mid on for a run. 224/2
  • 33.5 Very full and angling in on middle from 'round the wicket, Kusal brings down a straight bat and eases it down to long on for a single.
  • 33.4 On a length around off, it's defended off the back foot.
  • 33.3 Fullish and outside off, driven through covers for one.
  • 33.2 Straighter in line this time and Chandimal clips it behind square leg for a brace.
  • 33.1 FOUR! Fine shot! Short in length and outside off, Chandimal stands tall and slams it over point for a cracking boundary. Good start to the over for Sri Lanka. 50-run stand comes up between the two.
  • Drinks break. It's been a good going for Sri Lanka even after losing both their openers. Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Mendis have looked very positive in the middle and are amidst a smooth stand. England need wickets and that too in a heap to restrict Sri Lanka.
  • 32.6 Shortish and outside off, skidding off the surface, Kusal flashes and misses. 215/2
  • 32.5 SIX! He's got a real hold of that one. Stokes tries the slower yorker but ends up slipping a juicy full toss. Kusal Mendis stands his ground and launches it over wide long on for a maximum. Very good hit.
  • 32.4 Forced back down the track, past the bowler for a single.
  • 32.3 Cutting in from a good length, worked with gentle hands on the leg side.
  • 32.2 Top edged and FOUR! Stokes deceived Chandimal but it still went all the way. Rolled his fingers on this short ball as Chandimal swiveled to pull. Got a top edge which went across the fine leg fence, beating Adil Rashid's dive.
  • 32.1 Just ahead of a length, around off, a mistimed drive finds mid off. Chandimal quickly refuses the run.
  • 31.6 Makes it come back in on off, played off the inner half in front of square leg for a quick run. 204/2
  • 31.5 On a good length outside the line of off stump, run down late to third man. Single to the total.
  • 31.4 Angling in at first and then straightens up a shade, Mendis is a bit squared up as he defends it from inside the crease.
  • 31.3 Plays this late. Waits for the length ball outside off and then cuts it behind point. Third man cuts it off and keeps the batsmen down to just a single.
  • 31.2 Angling back in from around off, forced away on the off side.
  • 31.1 Comes from around the wicket and hurls it well outside off, the Lankan keeper gets beaten on his attempted cut shot.
  • Sam Curran is brought back into the attack.
  • 30.6 Another upper cut and another failed attempt. Stokes bangs it short and Mendis can't get it away. 201/2
  • 30.5 The cutter. Full in length outside off, pushed away from the body in front of cover.
  • 30.4 Bumper on outside off, this time Mendis attempts to ramp it over Buttler's head but misses.
  • 30.3 Slower in place, full in length on middle and leg. Wristed just wide of mid on for a brisk run.
  • 30.2 Marginally ahead of a length, well outside off, cut hard but straight to backward point.
  • 30.1 Short ball just around off, Dinesh arches back to play the ramp shot but fails to connect.
  • Ben Stokes to bowl his second over.
  • 29.6 SIX! Slog sweep! Mendis getting in his groove. That will do him a lot of good. Tossed up ball on middle, Mendis slogs this over mid-wicket. The ball just goes over the rope. 200/2
  • 29.5 Off spinner on leg, played with the spin towards mid-wicket for a run.
  • 29.4 Played to the point region by KM. They pick up a single.
  • 29.3 The batsman works it down the leg side.
  • 29.2 FOUR! Mendis gets a boundary. That will give him so much more confidence. Short ball on off, Kusal rocks back and pulls it over mid-wicket for a boundary.
  • 29.1 Full and down leg, flicked off his pads for one.
  • 28.6 Another leg spinner outside off, cut past point for one more. 187/2
  • 28.5 Leg spinner outside off, punched to covers.
  • 28.4 Played with soft hands to the off side, they pick up a single.
  • 28.3 Full on leg, turned to square leg.
  • 28.2 Played to the point region by the batsman. One run added to the total.
  • 28.1 SIX! Reverse sweep six! What a hit. Picked this one from outside leg and reverse sweeps this over backward point for a biggie. The first one of the innings.
  • 27.6 The batsman charges down the wicket and hits it to the on side. The batsmen have run through for a single. 178/2
  • 27.5 FOUR! Hits it really well. Straighter one on middle, Chandimal gets into position and reverse sweeps this over backward point for a boundary. Has been trying that for a while now.
  • 27.4 Loopy ball in line of the stumps, turned to the leg side.
  • 27.3 Played to mid-wicket region by the batsman.
  • 27.2 Straighter one on off, bunted down.

  • 26.3 Slower ball in line of the stumps, Chandimal plays it with a straight bat.
  • 26.2 Long appeal but sliding down leg. Googly on middle, Chandimal misses his flick and gets hit on his pads. They appeal but the umpire stays put.
  • 26.1 Loopy ball on off, Chandimal plays it into the ground.
  • Adil Rashid is into the attack.
  • 25.6 DC rocks onto the back foot and punches the ball to the off side. The batsmen have run through for a single. 170/2
  • 25.5 Driven through mid on by the batsman. The batsmen have run through for a single.
  • Kusal Mendis is the new man in.
  • 25.4 OUT! Dickwella misses out on what would have been a well-deserved ton. No hundred for any Sri Lankan player this year. We saw two coming close, but that's about it. Gets carried away and that gets the better of him. Tossed up ball outside off, Dickwella comes down the wicket and looks to go big over the on side. The ball takes the outside edge of the bat and goes to Root at short third man where he takes the simplest of catches. A well-played innings comes to an end.
  • 25.3 JUST SHORT! Fuller in length outside off, Chandimal reverse sweeps it towards short third man. Adil there dives but yet again the ball falls short.
  • 25.2 Swept from outside off behind square for one.
  • 25.1 Loopy ball down leg, Dickwella comes down and hits it back to the bowler.
  • 24.6 A bit of yes-no but Sri Lanka finally get a run. Flicks this towards Morgan (sub) yet again, who dives to stop the ball but cannot prevent the run. 166/1
  • 24.5 Just short. Fuller ball on leg, Dickwella flicks it towards mid-wicket. Morgan (sub) there dives forward but the ball falls short of him.
  • 24.4 4 dot balls. Fuller this time on off, Dickwella plays it into the ground.
  • 24.3 Length around off, ND defends it from within his crease.
  • 24.2 Played to the point region by Niroshan.
  • 24.1 Strays this on the leg side. Rushes into ND who misses his flick to get hit on the pads.
  • Ben Stokes is given the ball.
  • 23.6 Driven towards the mid off region. The batsmen have run through for a single. 165/1
  • 23.5 DROPPED! Oh dear! Poor cricket all around. Tossed up ball around off, Chandimal comes down the track and lofts this over mid-wicket. Gets more height than distance and Tom Curran gets under it after running across to his right from long on. Doesn't watch the ball carefully as it goes through his hands. The batsmen have run through for a single. Very poor. The shot choice was also needless by the Lankan skipper.
  • 23.4 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
  • 23.3 Appeal but surely some bat involved. Loopy ball in line of the stumps, Dickwella gets low to sweep and gets a faint inside edge towards square leg. They cross.
  • 23.2 FOUR! Lovely shot! Ali gives this air on off. Dickwella charges down and lofts it fine of mid on for a boundary. Moves into the nervous 90s now.
  • 23.1 Tossed up ball on off, Dickwella taps it to point.
  • 22.6 Flatter and outside off, tapped towards point for a run. 158/1
  • 22.5 Flighted around off, Niroshan has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
  • 22.4 Tossed up ball on off, Dickwella tries the conventional sweep this time but it takes the bottom edge and goes through the legs of the keeper for a couple of runs.
  • 22.3 FOUR BYES! A loopy ball outside off, Dickwella once again brings out the reverse sweep but fails to connect. Buttler's initial movement was to his right, thinking it to be a leg spinner and hence he has no chance of collecting it. The ball runs happily to the third man fence.
  • 22.2 Tossed up ball on middle, worked with the spin to the leg side.
  • 22.1 NOT OUT! No bat involved. Dickwella was pretty sure about it. Ali tosses this one up on off, it spins into Dickwella who looks to turn it away after striding forward. The ball hits something and loops behind to Buttler who takes the catch and appeals. The umpire raises his finger. Niroshan refers it immediately. The replays roll in and Snickometer shows that there was no bat involved. The third umpire announces his verdict but is then reminded by someone to check for the LBW as well. Now, the Ball Tracking shows that it's missing leg. Eventful ball.
  • Buttler has taken the catch and is appealing. The finger has gone up. Bat and pad involved? Dickwella takes the DRS straightaway. Let's see...
  • 21.6 ND flicks it away with a wristy shot. The batsmen have run through for a single. Straightaway calls the physio for some help. Some cramps maybe. 151/1
  • 21.5 150 up in the 22nd over. Paddles this to short fine leg to rotate strike.
  • 21.4 Sweeps this behind square to change ends.
  • 21.3 Very good running. Plays this with soft hands perfectly towards mid-wicket. They take the first one hard which enables them to come back for the second.
  • 21.2 Tosses this one up in line of the stumps, Dickwella comes down and drives it to mid off.
  • 21.1 Off spinner on middle, reverse sweep by Dickwella to point.
  • 20.6 Pushes it square to point with the spin. Dot ball to end the over. 146/1
  • 20.5 Swept through backward square leg for a single.
  • 20.4 Flighted outside off, Chandimal drives it through the line and finds long off for a run.
  • 20.3 Goes on the back foot and punches it through covers for one.
  • 20.2 Quite slow through the air again, on the stumps, the left-hander dances down and pushes it back to the bowler.
  • 20.1 Well bowled. Seeing Dickwella premeditate the reverse sweep Rashid really slows this up and it spins in. Forces the batsman to miss the shot.
  • 19.6 Driven through mid on by the batsman. They manage to come back for the second. 143/1

  • 19.1 OUT! Well... he is bowled. Wow. What a turn of events here in Colombo. A bizarre dismissal. Just the luck England needed? They have their breakthrough. A bit quicker just outside off, doesn't turn as much but still comes in. Samarawickrama looks to flick from the crease but it goes past the outside half of his bat. On its way back, it takes the off stump before touching Buttler's gloves and deflecting back to the sticks. One of the bails is down but the English skipper isn't too sure. So the umpires have a chat and take it upstairs. Replays confirm the ball met the off pole first which resulted in the bail going off. The partnership of 137 is broken.

  • Drinks break. A fine start from Sri Lanka. Both openers have got to their respective fifties and are going on strongly, as the hosts are 122 for the loss of no wickets. England look a bit clueless at the moment, which we haven't seen much in this series. They need a wicket and they need it fast.
  • 16.6 Huge lbw shout, but missing leg there. Rashid lands it on middle and leg and it keeps going on straight, doesn't turn much even though it is the googly. Catches Samarawickrama on the pads and Rashid goes up. The umpire denies it. Buttler opts against the review. Good call. 122/0

  • 13.5 The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.
  • 13.4 Quick single. Had to get the dive in and the fielder had to hit, but misses. Samarawickrama drives this to the left of mid off and takes off. Stokes moves to get the ball and fires it on the stumps at the bowler's. Had he scored the direct hit, Sadeera was gone.

Their bowling and batting have not been the best in recent times and they will want to rectify whatever it is ASAP. Will it be a clean sweep for the visitors? Or will the Islanders manage to avoid that? Stay tuned to find out.

Sri Lanka Vs England Live Score (ODI) Ball by Ball Commentary

  • England skipper, Eoin Morgan says they were very poor today and is disappointed how they ended the series. Adds further the guys brought in did not click and failed to execute the plans. Admits they were out played. Mentions there was plenty on offer in today's game but they were not upto the mark. States they will look to learn from this game but is happy for the way they have played throughout. He is happy the younger guys and the players who did not play in this series got an opportunity which enables them to have more players to select from for the World Cup.

Reckons it is not easy to play after losing the series but the boys showed great character. Admits their fielding was an issue before the series but they have done well. • Man of the Match, Niroshan Dickwella, says he is happy with the way he played. He believes he was unfortunate to not get to his 100. He admits it was his mistake but he was attacking throughout and wanted to play the same. Admits the words with the coaches helped him with his batting. Adds further it was a hot day and he was taking his time and was not cramping. Ends by saying he moves around to unsettle the lines and the lengths of the bowlers.
  • You get a feel it was just not England's day today. They were poor in the field, dropping several catches, their bowlers were very poor and their batting which most of the times fires, did not come off. Probably a day to forget for them but a series to remember as they have won it 3-1.
  • Now coming to the defense - Their bowlers started off in great fashion with both Rajitha and Chameera running through the top order. The former took one and the latter took three. In no time England were 28 for 4 and then it was an uphill task. A struggling (cramps) Stokes along with Moeen then counter-attacked. The two added a lovely 79-run stand. Ben Stokes got to his fifty but once the off spinning all-rounder fell, Sri Lanka ran through the lower order. Akila was the destroyer as he bagged four. However, the clouds opened up, just as the 9th wicket fell and that was that.
  • So, the inevitable has happened, the game has been CALLED OFF, which means, Sri Lanka have won the last ODI by a whopping margin of 219 (DLS). A complete team performance by them. They were ruthless with the bat first up, led by their opener, Dickwella and Chandimal. Smarawickrama and Kusal Mendis also played handy knocks which say the hosts post a massive 366. Their highest score against England.
  • A massive downpour is sweeping the Khettarama now. Covers are sweeping the ground from everywhere. Don't look like we are resuming any time soon, or probably not tonight. Neither team will be complaining too much, given the state of the game, Please stay tuned...
  • 26.1 OUT! LBW! The decision stands as it is! For the first time, we see an umpire rush for shelter as he runs with his left hand in the air, signalling the decision as out. Never looked in doubt, to be honest. Landed outside off, Plunkett looks to play that from the crease but is pretty late. Misses the ball, as it hits his pad. He is adjudged LBW but he reviews it. Replays show that the ball hit the back pad, then the glove and went behind. 9 down, are England as we are almost done with this match but it is pelting down, so the game is halted.
  • Plunkett has been adjudged LBW! He has taken the review though... Meanwhile, the covers are already coming on.

  • Liam Plunkett walks in at number 9. Will this end soon?
  • 22.1 OUT! Stokes' innings ends! It was a brave effort. But it needed too much out of him, that too, on literally one leg. Full and around leg, Ben got down to slog and on first sight, it seemed like he had got the distance. But when the ball did come down, Thisara Perera was calmly waiting under it to take the catch. The Lankans celebrate. Surely they have this in the bag now.
  • 21.6 Watchfully plays that out. 122/6
  • 21.5 Full and around middle, watchfully defended.

  • 19.6 Pushes it down to long on for a run. 20 overs up now which means we will have a result. The reserve day won't be coming into play. Also, just as I write that a big lightning was seen flashing near the ground. So the rain might not be far away. 119/5

  • 18.2 OUT! In the air... taken! Half the side is back into the hut now. Akila has provided the breakthrough and probably ended the hopes which were building in the English camp. He tosses it up around off, it pitches and then turns away. It was also bowled slightly slower. Ali tries to play it across the line with a slog but is done in by the turn and the pace. The ball takes a top edge and lobs towards covers. Chandimal runs in, dives and takes it. A good catch by the skipper ends the 79-run stand.
  • 18.1 Floated on off, kept out.
  • 17.6 Played to the point region by the batsman. 107/4
  • 17.5 EDGY FOUR! This one pitches and turns away. Stokes tries to cut but gets an outside edge, wide of the slip fielder and into the third man fence.
  • 17.4 FOUR! Gets to his 13th ODI fifty in style. However, not a lot of style in the way he celebrated it. He was holding his leg and then raised his bat to his dressing room. He is looking good out there but. Really timing it well. Even this one, it was tossed up outside off, Stokes goes down on one knee and hits it over covers for a boundary. It is also his first against Lanka, he would hope to fight and make it big.
  • 17.3 Another floated delivery outside off, Ali tries to go over covers but mistimes it towards the sweeper for a run.
  • 17.2 FOUR! Picked his spot well there. It was tossed up on middle, Ali hits it over mid on and the ball trickles over the fence.
  • 17.1 Again Stokes smash it towards wide long off and limps to the other end. Not looking good here is the big man.
  • 16.6 Makes room, Dananjaya follows him and Stokes smashes it to long off for a run. 93/4
  • 16.5 Another one but still can't find the gap.
  • 16.4 Reverse sweep but finds point.
  • 16.3 Played to the point region by the batsman.
  • 16.2 Just short! A good effort by Samarawickrama. He maybe misjudged it a touch. A slightly short ball on middle, Ali goes for the pull but ends up hitting it a little too straight towards long on. SS there first runs to his left, comes forward then, a little too late, dives but can't get to it. Good thing is, he saves a boundary. A run taken.
  • 16.1 That was played very late. Fires it on off, Ali waits for it and at the very last moment, guides it to backward point.
  • Drinks! So Sri Lanka are way ahead in the game at the moment. Their new-ball bowlers wrecked havoc but after that, Stokes and Ali have managed to build a good stand here. The two hold the key and England would hope they can continue. Stokes though seems to be struggling a touch but he would look to shrug off the cramps and pull out something extraordinary here.
  • 15.6 The googly, Ali picks it and works it through square leg for a run. 91/4
  • 15.5 The batsman defends it from within the crease.
  • 15.4 Another short ball on middle, Moeen goes back and tries to pull but is early into the shot. It goes off the toe end back to the bowler. Ali will be disappointed. He would feel a boundary opportunity was missed there.
  • 15.3 Very full on middle, it is pushed towards mid on for a run.
  • 15.2 FOUR! But maybe a catching opportunity goes abegging. It is tossed up on off, Stokes brings out the reverse sweep. The ball takes the outside edge due to the extra bounce. Goes in between slip and the keeper, both fail to react and the ball races away. Back-to-back boundaries.
  • 15.1 FOUR! Welcome into the attack! A drag down to begin with! Stokes won't miss out. He pulls it through mid-wicket for a boundary.
  • Lakshan Sandakan is on.
  • 14.6 A good nut to end the over! Akila floats it up on off, it is slower. Ali lunges and tries to defend but is beaten by the away turn. 81/4
  • 14.5 FOUR! Swept and swept fine! On the stumps, Ali loves playing that shot. He goes down on one knee and sweeps it through square leg for a boundary. Also, 50-run stand comes up. A very important one. It has also come up in quick time. The two hold the key for England.
  • 14.4 Floated up on the stumps, kept out.
  • 14.3 Stokes positions himself to play the reverse sweep early. Akila bowls it on the leg stump. Stokes still connects well and hits it through point for a run.
  • 14.2 Akila tosses it up on off, Stokes with the turn, lofts it over covers. It is not right off the middle and the batsmen take two.
  • 14.1 On the stumps, pushed back to the bowler.
  • Akila Dananjaya is into the attack.
  • 13.6 FOUR! Another expensive over. 12 from this one and 25 from the last two. A half-tracker from Dhananjaya. Ali goes back and pulls it over mid-wicket for a boundary. England seem to be getting a move on now. 74/4
  • 13.5 The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.
  • 13.4 SIX! BANG! Top shot by Ali. This should also release the pressure off Stokes. That was played with the angle. Seeing that there is not a lot of turn, he plays the slog sweep, connects really well and it sails over the mid-wicket fence.
  • 13.3 Makes room does Stokes and he slaps it through covers for a run. Seems like he has decided to go after the bowlers. He has to as the run rate required is increasing.
  • 13.2 Slightly shorter in length outside off, Moeen pushes it through covers and takes a single.
  • 13.1 Slower through the air on middle, Ali defends it out.
  • 12.6 A dot to end but an expensive over. 13 from it. Slower ball, it has been eased to mid on. 62/4
  • 12.5 FOUR! Now getting better! Third boundary in the over. Stokes dances down the track, Perera bangs it short. It seems to have done Stoke in but he adjusts and cuts it over point.
  • 12.4 FOUR! Stand and deliver! Nothing much wrong with that delivery, it was just short of a length. Stokes picks the length early and pulls it through mid-wicket and the ball races away. This is turning out to be a good over for England.
  • 12.3 Does the smart thing now by taking a single as he guides it down to third man.
  • 12.2 FOUR! A much-needed one for England. Brings up the fifty but it has come at the cost of 4 wickets. Short and it sits up to be hit. Ali goes back, swivels and the pulls it through backward square leg for a boundary.
  • 12.1 Full and outside off, Ali finds the man at covers with his drive.
  • Just as Perera was about to bowl, Ali pulls out. Sightscreen problem, maybe.
  • 11.6 Two dots to end a tight first by Dhananjaya. He darts it on off, Stokes pushes it to covers. 318 more needed in 228 balls. 49/4
  • 11.5 Reverse swept but finds the fielder at point. That was nicely hit, a little to the left or the right and it would have been a certain boundary.
  • 11.4 With the angle, Moeen nudges it around the corner and jogs to the other end. Dealing in singles are England.
  • 11.3 Fires it on off, Stokes pushes it through covers and takes a run.
  • 11.2 Short ball and it skids off the surface. Ali goes back and pulls it down to long on for a run.
  • 11.1 Slower through the air on middle, Moeen defends it.
  • Dhananjaya de Silva is into the attack.
  • 10.6 Another slower ball, Moeen works it towards mid-wicket and takes a run. 5 from Perera's first. 46/4
  • 10.5 A dot as Perera lands it on a length and attacks the stumps. Moeen brings out the forward defense.
  • 10.4 Make that 4 as Stokes dances down the track and slaps it through covers for a run.
  • 10.3 Slower ball outside off, Ali guides it to third man and gets to the other end. Three singles of three balls to start Thisara's spell.
  • 10.2 On the middle pole, Stokes tucks it towards wide mid on and takes another single.
  • 10.1 Goes short to Moeen Ali, he pulls it all along the ground and to the man at deep square leg for a run.
  • POWERPLAY 2 has been signalled. 4 players allowed outside the 30-yard circle till the 40th over (if the match lasts till then). Thisara Perera is the first bowling change of the night.
  • 9.6 A short ball, down the leg side, pulled towards fine leg for a run. 41/4 IN POWERPLAY 1, Sri Lanka were 72/0 at this stage... 41/4
  • 9.5 Full and around off, Moeen looks to defend but gets it off the inner half towards mid on.
  • 9.4 Slightly fuller, punched wide of cover towards mid off.
  • 9.3 Another short ball, punched towards cover once more.
  • 9.2 Back of a length outside off, punched towards cover.
  • 9.1 Outside off, pushed towards point.
  • 8.6 FOUR! CLUNK! A short ball, around middle, Stokes pulls it over mid-wicket and gets a boundary! 327 more needed from 246 balls. 40/4
  • 8.5 Played through mid-wicket by the batsman.
  • 8.4 On a length around middle, Stokes looks to flick but misses and is hit on the thigh pad.
  • 8.3 Full on middle, pushed towards mid on.
  • 8.2 The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot.
  • 8.1 FOUR! But a top effort from Dinesh Chandimal. A length ball outside off, Stokes punches it through the covers. Dinesh Chandimal gives it a superb chase from mid off, gets to the ball near the ropes and pulls it back in. Dasun Shanaka chasing it from cover gets to the ball now and returns the throw. The batsmen take three but the umpire checks it upstairs. Numerous replays are shown and eventually, we get the feeling, along with the third umpire, that Chandimal, while trying to flick the ball back, has touched the ropes. Not totally sure though...
  • 7.6 A short ball, outside leg, Ali looks to hook but misses. Dickwella puts in a lung-breaking appeal but the umpire calmly shakes his head. A wicket with just a boundary from the over, Chameera's figures read 4-0-18-3! 32/4
  • 7.5 FOUR! Fine way to get off the mark! Full and outside off, Moeen leans into this shot and drives it through the covers for a boundary!
  • 7.4 Around off, watchfully blocked out.
  • 7.3 A bouncer to greet the new man, Moeen lets it go.
  • Moeen Ali walks in at number 6, replacing Root.
  • 7.2 OUT! The catch is clean and Root has to go too! England are in tatters now. Outside off, on a length, Root punches it aerially and cannot keep it down. The ball is dipping a touch but Sadeera Samarawickrama dives full length forward and takes it, claiming it straightaway. But Root stands his ground. The umpires have a chat and then refer it upstairs. Clean as a whistle, is the catch, as per the replays. With Root gone, the English tree is getting uprooted...
  • Is that taken? Sadeera Samarawickrama is claiming the catch but Root is not going anywhere. The umpires refer it upstairs and the soft signal is OUT.
  • 7.1 Outside off, punched towards cover.
  • 6.6 Full on middle, flicked through mid-wicket for three runs. 339 more needed from 258 balls. Root moves to 10 from 14 balls. 28/3
  • 6.5 NOT OUT. PITCHED OUTSIDE LEG. End of story. That was a good delivery though and on seeing it in the replays, it did seem like that was pitched in line. Stokes was clearly beaten by pace as the ball landed and came back in slightly, missing the bat and hitting the pads. Rajitha was confident and Dickwella convinced Chandimal to go for the review after Aleem Dar turned the LBW appeal down. Well, sadly for the home side, no more review chances in this match... meanwhile, a leg bye was stolen.
  • Huge shout for LBW! Sri Lanka seem to be confident. They take a review against Stokes. Seemed to be pitching outside leg.
  • 6.4 Full and outside off, Ben is halfway down the track but is then forced to reach out, as Kasun smartly bowls a slower one. Mistimes his shot towards mid off.
  • 6.3 That is a good nut. Rajitha lands it on a good length around off, Stokes looks to defend but the ball moves away and beats the outside edge.
  • 6.2 Outside off, steered to third man for a single. The stand moves to 20 from 28 balls.

  • 5.2 The batsman opens the face of the bat and helps it to third man. The batsmen have run through for a single.
  • 5.1 On a length outside off, Root looks to defend, but gets a bottom edge to the off side. He has a look at his partner and both set off.

  • 4.5 The batsman has punched the ball off the back foot. One run added to the total.

  • 2.2 Around off, defended watchfully.
  • 2.1 On a length outside off, left alone.
  • 1.6 Full and outside off, this time Stokes cannot resist. Goes for the cover drive but gets an outside edge which goes towards third man. A single to get him off the mark. What an over - 0, W, 0, W, 0, WD, 1!!! 6/3
  • 1.6 WIDE. This is well outside off, Ben has nothing to do with it.
  • 1.5 Outside off, comes back in slightly, but is safe enough to be left alone.
  • Ben Stokes is in at number 5 and we are not even beyond over 2 yet...
  • 1.4 OUT! And then there were three! Sri Lanka are all over England now. Similar ball to the Hales one, but this time the batsman had to play at it. The outswinger consumes the skipper too. He looks to defend but is beaten by the late movement. Tries to counter it by walking into the shot but no difference. A simple edge to the keeper behind. Two wickets in 4 balls for Chameera who is flying...
  • 1.3 On middle and leg, played straight to short mid-wicket.
  • Skipper Jos Buttler walks in at number 4, replacing Hales.
  • 1.2 OUT! Edged and taken! Wow. Both the new-ball bowlers have a wicket in their opening over. Both the openers are dismissed. Horror start for England in their pursuit of a clean sweep. On a length, outside off, Hales is a touch tentative in playing that. It swings late, takes the outside edge and goes between the keeper and first slip. But Kusal Mendis at the latter position keeps his eyes on the ball and takes it cleanly to his left. Another failure for Hales - a duck this time.
  • 1.1 Outside off, slightly short in length, Hales looks to cut but gets a bottom edge to the off side.
  • Joe Root comes in at number 3, replacing Roy. But he will not be on strike. Dushmantha Chameera to bowl with the second new ball.
  • 0.6 OUT! BOWLED! That is a cracker of an outswinger and Roy is out of here. A lovely yorker, around off, Roy looks to get his bat down to defend but the ball swings away late, beats the outside edge and hits the base of off stump! A wicket in the first over then. 4/1
  • 0.5 The batsman has been struck on the thigh pad. There is an LBW appeal but it is turned down. Too high.
  • 0.4 FOUR! You beauty! Roy does not care whether the ball is swinging or not. Or if he was beaten or not. Full and on middle, Roy walks down the track and flicks it through square leg for a boundary!
  • 0.3 Full and outside off, driven straight to mid off.
  • 0.2 Outside off, watchfully pushed towards point.
  • 0.1 What a start! Call that a peach, a banana an apple or whatever fruit you want. The ball is landed in the corridor of uncertainty, Roy walks forward, looking to play straight but the ball swings away late and beats the outside edge, narrowly missing the off stump! That will set the tone for the innings.
  • Welcome back for the run chase. First things first. NO RAIN. We have a resumption on time. The Lankans get together in a huddle. Out come the umpires, followed by the players. Jason Roy and Alex Hales are the openers for England. Kasun Rajitha to begin proceedings for the run chase. Roy to face, with a slip in place. Here we go!!!
