  • All the South Africa pacers had at least a wicket to their name. Olivier was once again the star man as he finished with a 4-fer. Steyn also finished with 3 and the other two took 3 in total. The bowlers now have done their job, it is up to the batsmen now. The hosts would be looking to get a good lead but it won't be easy against a good Pakistan attack and also on a wicket which is good for bowling. Will we see the ball dominate once again or will the batters come to the fore this time? Join us in the second innings to find out.
  • End of another outstanding effort with the ball and another poor batting display from the visitors. It is South Africa who walk off the field as the happier side and rightly so. Their pacers have justified their skipper's decision to bowl first. They ran through the top order and had Pakistan reeling at 54/5. However, a counter-attacking partnership between Masood and Sarfraz did give some respectability to their score. The former missed out on a half ton, whereas the skipper continued and got to one. He built another handy stand with Amir but once the wicket-keeper batsman fell, South Africa managed to wrap things up quickly.
  • 51.1 OUT! Steyn takes the last wicket and Afridi departs. The pacer bangs it short on middle, Afridi tries to back away but is too slow and it hits him on the glove. The ball then goes straight to de Kock who takes an easy catch behind the stumps. Steyn gets his 3rd of the game. PAKISTAN HAVE BEEN BOWLED OUT FOR 177!
  • 50.6 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat. 177/9
  • 50.5 Another swing and another miss! Short again on middle, Amir looks to pull but only connects with thin air.
  • 50.4 On the stumps, the batsman blocks it out.
  • 50.3 Amir makes room again, Olivier bowls it short. He goes for the cut but misses.
  • 50.2 On the pads, Amir tucks it around the corner for a brace.
  • 50.1 Back of a length on off, Amir slices it over point for a couple.
  • 49.6 NOT OUT! Steyn bowls it on a length on off, Afridi tries to slog it over mid on. But hits his pad and the ball goes straight to the keeper. Steyn appeals and the umpire shakes his head. Du Plessis goes for the review. The replay shows it was struck on his thigh pad and the batsman survives. South Africa lose both the reviews. This pair is frustrating the home side. 173/9
  • Review for a caught behind. It has been taken upstairs to see whether there is an inside edge or not.
  • 49.5 Back of a length on middle, Afridi slogs it over mid on for a couple of runs.
  • 49.4 Length delivery on off, Amir taps it towards point and the batsmen run a quick single.
  • 49.3 A touch short on middle and leg, SA tucks it to the leg side for a single.
  • 49.2 Goes short time around off, Afridi lets it go.
  • 49.1 Length delivery on middle, Amir taps it towards point for a run.
  • Second session has been extended by 30 minutes. Play will go on either till the end of the specified time or the innings break, whichever comes first.
  • 48.6 Full and on middle, Shaheen hits it hard towards the bowler who stops it but not cleanly. 168/9
  • 48.5 A good bouncer! Shaheen evades it.
  • 48.4 High up in the air... de Kock is after it but fails to hang on. A short ball, Amir goes for the pull, the ball takes the top edge and goes over the heads of the fielders behind. De Kock calls for it, Amla moves out of the way as Quinton is the man with the gloves. He though circles around it, tries to take it with a dive but then fails to catch it.
  • 48.3 Down the leg side, Amir misses the flick.
  • 48.2 FOUR! On the shorter side, Amir makes room and flat-bats it through mid on for a boundary. Vital runs these for the visitors.
  • 48.1 On the shorter side, Amir hops and keeps it out.
  • Shaheen Afridi is the last batsman for Pakistan.
  • 47.6 OUT! There goes no. 9! Steyn gets his third. An outswinger on off, Abbas hardly puts forward a stride as he tries to defend. The ball takes the outside edge and goes into the mitts of the keeper. 163/9
  • 47.5 On the shorter side, Abbas gets right behind the line and defends it onto the ground.
  • 47.4 A bumper, it does not bounce a lot. Abbas somehow ducks under it.
  • 47.3 On the stumps, it is nicely played by Abbas.
  • 47.2 Fuller in length and outside off, Abbas tries to drive but misses.
  • 47.1 DROPPED! A very tough chance that! Steyn bowls it full and wide outside off, Amir drives it square on the off side, does not keep it down. It goes uppishly towards point where Bavuma dives full stretch to his left, gets a hand to it but can't hang on. A single taken.
  • 46.6 Short of a length delivery outside off, Abbas shoulders arms to it. 162/8

  • 46.4 Length delivery outside off, Abbas lets it go.
  • Mohammad Abbas is the new man in.
  • 46.3 OUT! Pakistan are 8 down. Yasir Shah departs. Olivier bowls it on a length on off, Yasir tries to defend it but gets an outside edge of the bat and the ball goes straight to the third slip fielder du Plessis who takes a comfortable catch. 4 wickets for Olivier. He would like to get fifer in the game.
  • 46.2 Fuller on off, Amir drives it towards mid off for a single.
  • 46.1 Length delivery on off, Amir back away and tries to slash over the covers but fails to connect.
  • 45.6 BEATEN! On a length and around off, the ball pitches and then moves a shade away. Yasir is squared up as the tries to defend. The ball just about kisses the outside edge. 161/7
  • 45.5 On the stumps, Shah this time, gets behind the line and blocks it.
  • 45.4 Yasir is going after Steyn here. He makes room and gets a ball outside off, he slashes at it but misses.
  • 45.3 Another swing this time though he misses. Short and outside off, Shah tries to hit it over the mid-wicket region but misses.
  • 45.2 Good delivery and well played in the end! Length ball around off, this one takes off after pitching. Seeing the bounce, Yasir gets his gloves and bat out of the way.
  • 45.1 FOUR! In the air... but safe! A slightly short ball on middle, Yasir swings across the line. The ball takes the top edge and goes high over the keeper's head, lands safe though. It is Faf du Plessis who gives it a chase from first slip. He tries to pull it back with a slide but his feet is touching the ropes.
  • 44.6 Similar to the fourth ball of the over. Back of a length and Amir looks to smash this into the mid-wicket stands. Can only connect with thin air. 157/7
  • 44.5 Accurate short ball on middle and leg, barely ducked and evaded by the batter.
  • 44.4 Swing and a miss! Back of a length delivery in line of the stumps, Amir backs away and looks to go big over the leg side, only to get beaten.
  • 44.3 The batsman has nudged the ball fine down the leg side. They pick up a single.
  • Yasir Shah is the new man in.
  • 44.2 OUT! The captain departs. Olivier with the breakthrough. Sarfraz will be frustrated with that dismissal. Not the best of deliveries. It is a touch wide outside off, Sarfraz tries to cut it over the slip cordon, but gets an outside edge. It is a good catch from de Kock behind the stumps as he dives to his right and takes it. A brilliant innings of 56 comes to an end. 7 down for Pakistan. The score of 200 for them looks unlikely now.
  • 44.1 Bowls it wide down leg, Sarfraz tries to flick it but misses it. He does not need to play at those.
  • 43.6 Back of a length delivery on middle and leg, Amir tucks it uppishly but just wide of the short leg fielder. 156/6
  • 43.5 Amir needs to be careful here. Steyn bowls it on a length outside off, Amir tries to slash it hard but fails to connect it.
  • 43.4 A touch short on middle, the batsman defends it off the back foot and onto the ground.
  • 43.3 Bouncer from Steyn. Amir nicely ducks underneath it.
  • 43.2 Back of a length again around off, Amir gets behind the line and defends it onto the ground.
  • 43.1 Around off, the batsman guides it towards point.
  • Dale Steyn is back on now.
  • 42.6 Good shot but straight to the fielder. Length delivery on off, Sarfraz punches it straight to the point fielder. Either side would have resulted in a boundary. 156/6
  • 42.5 The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.
  • 42.4 Goes for the effort ball. Bouncer from Olivier on middle, Ahmed lets it go through the keeper.

  • 41.4 In the air but safe... Length delivery on off, Amir tries to go uppishly over covers, but hits the toe end of the bat and the ball goes towards mid off. The fielder there puts his left hand out but it did not stick. The batsmen take couple of runs in the process.
  • 41.3 A touch short on off, Amir defends it from within the crease.
  • 41.2 Wide outside off, Amir tries to slash it hard over point but misses it completely.

  • 40.6 FOUR! GORGEOUS! Overpitched and Sarfraz drives it beautifully down the ground for a boundary. 154/6
  • 40.6 WIDE! That is wayyy over him. Goes for the short pitch ball again. Sarfraz watches the bouncer go way above his head. The umpire has signalled a wide.
  • 40.5 Back of a length on middle, Sarfraz defends it off the back foot and onto the ground.
  • 40.4 Similar delivery on middle, Ahmed ducks it time to let that one go over him.
  • 40.3 Bouncer from Olivier this time. Sarfraz nicely ducks underneath it.
  • 40.2 Back of a length on off, SA taps it towards the gully region.
  • 40.1 Fuller on off, Sarfraz leans forward and drives it through cover-point for a couple of runs.
  • 39.6 Fifty for Sarfraz, his 17th in Test cricket. A lot of questions were being raised about his contribution to the team and he has shown the critics why he belongs here. Led from the front when Pakistan needed a hero. He though has to continue and add as many runs as possible. He guides this down to third man and takes a run to get to that milestone. 147/6
  • 39.5 Back of a length around off, it is pushed to mid off.
  • 39.4 In the air... but on the bounce! Sarfraz will not be happy with that shot as he has a word with Amir. This is on a length and around off, Amir swings but the ball goes off the inner half, uppishly towards mid on. Rabada there collects it on the bounce.
  • 39.3 EDGY RUNS! A good delivery this, full and swinging away. Sarfraz tries to defend but gets an outside edge, past the second slip fielder and down towards third man for a run.
  • 39.2 FOUR BYES! That took off, leaving the keeper no chance. On a length and around off, Sarfraz looks to drive it on the up but is beaten by the extra bounce. De Kock fails to collect it and the ball goes down to the third man fence.
  • 39.1 FOUR! Lovely guided shot this! He plays that shot really well, says Ramiz Raja. It is slightly short and outside off, Sarfraz plays it very late through backward point and bags himself another boundary.
  • 38.6 Back of a length on off, Amir backs away and tries to slash it over covers but misses it completely. 136/6
  • 38.5 Length delivery on off, Amir punches it through point for a couple of runs. These are bonus runs for Pakistan.

  • 38.3 Length delivery on off, Ahmed guides it through third slip for a single.

  • 37.6 Fuller outside off, Sarfraz tries to drive it but misses it completely. 132/6
  • 37.5 FOUR! Good use of the feet from the captain. Fuller delivery on middle, Sarfraz dances down the track and whips it through mid-wicket for a boundary.

  • 37.3 Fuller on middle, SA drives it straight to the bowler.
  • 37.2 Length delivery on off, Sarfraz pushes it towards point.
  • 37.1 FOUR! Super shot from Sarfraz. Vernon drags it short on middle, Sarfraz pulls it through mid-wicket and the ball races away to the fence.
  • Drinks are on the field. South Africa continue to be on top. Especially after they broke the stand between Masood and Sarfraz. They would look to wrap things up quickly. For Pakistan, Sarfraz holds the key, he has to do the bulk of the scoring and hope the tail hangs around.
  • 36.6 On the middle stump, it is worked around the corner for a run. 124/6
  • 36.5 Back of a length on off, Sarfraz defends it.
  • 36.4 FOUR! Clever shot, only if it comes off though and it has this time. Short and outside off, Sarfraz arches his back and then upper cuts it over the slip cordon for a boundary.
  • 36.3 On the shorter side, Amir awkwardly hits it through covers for a run.

  • 35.4 Full and wide outside off, the captain lets it go.
  • 35.3 Length delivery on off, Sarfraz taps it towards the point region.

  • Vernon Philander is back on.
  • 34.6 The ball is way wide on the leg side but the batsman still goes after it. 118/6
  • 34.5 NOT OUT! Off the elbow guard! Amir survives and South Africa lose a review. A snorter of a delivery this, Amir somehow tries to fend it away but the ball goes off something towards the first slip fielder. He takes it and a loud appeal follows. The umpire shakes his head. After a chat, South Africa review. Replays roll in and it shows the on-field call is the right one.
  • Review time! An appeal for a caught behind has been turned down. South Africa review. Is it off the glove or the elbow guard?
  • The physios are out to check the extent of Amir's injury.

  • 32.6 Fuller in length around off, Amir strokes it through covers and takes two. He is off the mark. 116/6
  • 32.5 Back of a length around off, Amir keeps it out.
  • 32.4 Almost got another one! Excellent delivery first up. A yorker however, the line is just outside off. Amir fails to get his bat down in time and gets beaten.
  • Mohammad Amir is the new man in.
  • 32.3 OUT! Rabada has provided the breakthrough South Africa have been looking for. Ends the 60-run stand and also a very decent innings from Shan. Rabada makes excellent use of the angle, he lands it on a length around off, slants away. Masood tries to defend but due to the angle, the ball takes the outside edge and goes in between first slip and the keeper. Quinton de Kock dives to his left and takes a solid catch. Needed something special to break this stand and de Kock has provided it. South Africa are now into the tail. Can they wrap it up quickly?
  • 32.2 FOUR! Another excellent shot! It was fuller delivery outside off, Shan drives it straight past the bowler and through mid off for a boundary.
  • 32.1 Good length on off, the batter defends it onto the ground.
  • 31.6 Wide outside off, left alone. 110/5
  • 31.5 Almost a yorker on off, no swing whatsoever. Too easy for Sarfraz to keep it out.
  • 31.4 The batsman has punched that ball through the offside.
  • 31.3 EDGY FOUR! Now luck also going Pakistan's way. Back of a length around off, gets some extra bounce on this one. Sarfraz hangs his bat out, gets an outside edge. The ball flies through the slip cordon and a boundary results.
  • 31.2 On middle, Masood works it through mid-wicket for a single. 50-run stand up between the twp, a very important one, they joined association when Pakistan were trouble. They though still have a long way to go.
  • 31.1 FOUR! Slightly fuller this time by Steyn on middle, Shan transfers his weight on the front foot and then just strokes it through mid-wicket. The ball races away.
  • 30.6 A single to end as Masood nudges it towards fine leg. 101/5
  • 30.5 A perfect fast bowler's response. A boundary on the previous ball and now Rabada bangs it short. Masood ducks under it.
  • 30.4 FOUR! 100 up for Pakistan! Excellent shot once again. A little bit of room on offer, enough for Shan to guide it through point and the ball races away.
  • 30.3 The batsman has pushed it to the cover region. One run added to the total.
  • 30.2 Angles this one into the batter, it is worked towards mid-wicket.
  • 30.1 On the shorter side, it is pulled towards square leg for a run.
  • 29.6 BEATEN! Once again a shot which could have been avoided. Slightly fuller and outside off, Sarfraz plays inside the line and gets beaten. 94/5
  • 29.5 A bouncer and Sarfraz ducks under it with his bat held above his head. Not a good idea that.
  • 29.4 Driven nicely! Full and outside off, Shan does not try to over hit it, he just times it through covers for a run.
  • 29.3 Wide outside off, Masood is happy to let those pass by.
  • 29.2 A bumper, the batter ducks under it.
  • 29.1 On middle, Sarfraz strokes it towards wide mid on for a quick run. 39 is the partnership now between the two.
  • 28.6 Outside off, the batsman leaves it alone. The wicket seems to have eased out a little here, no movement, also the zip seems to be missing in this session. Looks good to bat on now. 92/5
  • 28.5 On the stumps, it is kept out.
  • 28.4 Good length outside off, Masood knows where his off pole is, he covers it and makes a leave.
  • 28.3 FOUR! Beautifully timed! Shan really looks assured out there. On the shorter side, the batter stands tall and then places it through point. The ball races away.
  • Dale Steyn is off the field. His left hand seems to be bandaged. He hurt his hand while trying to field a ball. Does not look in too much discomfort.
  • 28.2 Back of a length on off, Sarfraz guides it towards point, the fielder there makes a half-stop and concedes a run.
  • 28.1 Shan shuffles right across and then works it with the angle through square leg for a single.
  • 27.6 Well bowled and well played! Good length around off, it jags back in. Sarfraz lunges and keeps it out. 86/5
  • 27.5 A little too straight, Shan nudges it towards square leg for a run.
  • 27.4 Drop and run! This is very good from the two batsmen. On a length and around off, Sarfraz taps it towards covers and gets to the other end.
  • 27.3 Good running! Guides it towards backward point and scampers across for a single.
  • 27.2 A little too straight this time, it is worked around the corner and a run is taken. Another good partnership building here for Pakistan.
  • 27.1 How do you play those? What a gem! On a length and around off, it pitches and then straightens. Sarfraz tries to defend but is done in by the away movement. Maybe he could have had a better stride forward.
  • 26.6 Goes for the yorker but ends up bowling it too full on middle, Sarfraz works it down to fine leg and a run is taken. 82/5
  • 26.5 Length again around off, Sarfraz gets right behind the line and blocks it out.
  • 26.4 Another good shot but for no runs! Full and on off, Sarfraz strokes it to mid off.
  • 26.3 Good length again, this time on the stumps, SA pushes it to mid on.
  • 26.2 Well bowled but Sarfraz could have probably left that one. Good length outside off, Sarfraz pokes at it and gets beaten.
  • 26.1 Bowls a fuller length ball on off, it comes back in a touch. Sarfraz plays it nicely towards mid on.
  • Kagiso Rabada to bowl from the other end.
  • 25.6 A single to end the first over after Lunch. 6 from it as Sarfraz pushes it towards covers for a run. 81/5
  • 25.5 Three runs! Slightly short and outside off, Masood guides it through point and takes three. So this is turning out to be a good first over after Lunch for Pakistan.
  • 25.4 First run for Sarfraz now, however, he must be feeling, he could have got more there. On the pads, Ahmed flicks it but finds the man at fine leg. Only a single.
  • 25.3 On the shorter side and on the body, Masood is hurried into the pull shot, he mistimes it towards square leg for a single. First run in this session for Pakistan.
  • 25.2 Another one way outside off, Masood is not tempted to go after those.
  • 25.1 Begins with a delivery way outside off, Masood lets it be.
  • Welcome back. We are back for the afternoon session! Shan Masood and Sarfraz Ahmed will resume their innings. The former will be on strike and he will face Dale Steyn who will continue his spell after Lunch. Here we go...
  • ... DAY 1, SESSION 2 ...
  • What is fear? Steyn. What is difficulty? Steyn and Philander. What is hazard? Steyn, Philander and Rabada. What is terror? Facing Olivier along with these three. The seamers have just been prolific, landing the ball in the right areas and getting the desired results. They will now look to replicate that post Lunch and aim to bat before Tea. Join us back at 1.10 pm local (1110 GMT).
  • Don't think the surface has played badly. This is an exhibition of pure fast bowling against some less talented batting. Barring Shan Masood, no one has looked confident about his technique. Like the first Test, the visitors will hope that they can get one decent stand and push the score past 150.
  • Do we need to stress whose session it was? Blown away in a matter of minutes, was the Pakistan top order. Not quite sure whether this is what Sarfraz had in mind when he said at the toss that he was looking to bat.
  • 24.6 This one jags back in a little, Sarfraz works it towards mid-wicket. He wants a run but Shan does not want to take any risk on the last ball of the session. THAT WILL BE LUNCH ON DAY 1! 75/5
  • 24.5 On the off stump, Sarfraz defends it onto the ground.
  • 24.4 FOUR! Sarfraz has really come out with some positive intent! He is already on 16 and it has taken him only 15 deliveries. Short and on middle, Sarfraz is on the back foot quickly, he swivels and pulls it past the diving mid-wicket fielder.
  • 24.3 Back of a length around off, Sarfraz goes back and defends it onto the ground.
  • 24.2 Back of a length around off, Sarfraz stands tall and defends it onto the ground.
  • 24.1 On the pads, Shan works it towards fine leg for a run. Shan is really playing well.
  • 23.6 FOUR! Nicely guided! On the shorter side, Sarfraz waits for the ball to come to him and then at the very end, guides it through backward point for a boundary. 70/5
  • 23.5 On the fuller side outside off, shapes away a touch. Sarfraz watchfully leaves it.
  • 23.4 On the pads, it is flicked through square leg for a single.
  • 23.3 The short ball and the batsman ducks under it.
  • 23.2 A little too wide outside off, the batsman does not play at it.
  • 23.1 Good running! On a length around middle, Sarfraz works it towards the leg side, he sets off for a run. There is almost a collision between the fielder coming in from mid-wicket and mid on, they avoid it and a run is completed with ease.
  • Dale Steyn to have another go before Lunch.
  • 22.6 Length again around middle, Shan gets right behind the line and blocks it. 64/5
  • 22.5 Back of a length on off, Masood is solid in defense.
  • 22.4 This too is as good a shot as the last one. However, this time, Sarfraz's gets one run less than the amount of runs he got on the last ball. Full and around off, Sarfraz leans into it and strokes it through covers. The fielder from that position gives it a chase and saves a run for his side.
  • 22.3 FOUR! Crunched! Slightly short and outside off, Sarfraz stands tall and slaps it through cover-point. It was right off the middle, you need not run for those.
  • 22.2 Length again around off, Sarfraz pushes it to covers.
  • 22.1 On a length and around off, the batsman goes back and blocks it out.
  • Vernon Philander is back on now. Another 10 minutes to go for Lunch.
  • 21.6 Another half-tracker, however, Shan is upto the task as he lets it go through to the keeper. 57/5
  • 21.5 Back of a length on middle, Masood flicks it to mid-wicket.
  • 21.4 Another short ball, Shan easily evades it.
  • 21.3 On the body of the batsman, Masood tucks it to square leg.
  • 21.2 Short again and Masood ducks under it.
  • 21.1 On the shorter side, Shan works it towards square leg. Shan has looked good against the short balls.
  • 20.6 The batsman works it down the leg side. They pick up a single. 57/5
  • 20.5 Is Sarfraz off the mark? Not yet. On a good length around middle, Ahmed looks to tuck but misses. The ball goes off his pads wide of short leg. A leg bye taken.
  • 20.4 That is a beauty. Rabada lands it on a length outside off and then gets it to move away, squaring Sarfraz up as he looked to defend. Past the outside edge.
  • 20.3 Full and just outside off, well blocked out.
  • 20.2 On a length outside off, watchfully defended.
  • 20.1 Full and around middle, worked through mid-wicket for a single. Pakistan move to 555 - meaning, 55/5.
  • 19.6 Back of a length around off, Ahmed defends it onto the ground. 54/5
  • In comes the skipper to face the music. Can he ensure that the 6th wicket does not fall in this session?
  • 19.5 OUT! In the air... taken! Half the side back in the hut and we are not even done with the first session. Not sure if that was poor judgment of length by Azam or did the ball just not bounce. I feel it is the former one. South Africa won't care though. It is just behind a length around off, it comes back in after pitching. Azam tries to sway away, expecting the ball to bounce a lot more. He also fails to drop his hands down, the ball then hits his glove and lobs towards Faf du Plessis at second slip. He accepts a dolly. Pakistan now in dire straits here.
  • 19.4 Back of a length around off, Azam stands tall and defends it onto the ground.
  • 19.3 On the shorter side and on the body, it is pulled awkwardly towards fine leg for a single.
  • 19.2 Back of a length around off, Shan punches it to covers.
  • 19.1 On the body of the batsman, Shan covers his off stump and tries to leave. The ball though hits his body and goes to the keeper.
  • 18.6 A bumper now! Babar ducks under it. 53/4
  • 18.5 Goes for a yorker but ends up serving a full toss. The batter strokes it to mid on.
  • 18.4 Straightaway goes for it! Short and outside off, he slaps it uppishly but well wide of cover. A couple taken.
  • Babar Azam comes in at number 6, replacing Shafiq. 27 minutes left for Lunch.
  • 18.3 OUT! EDGED AND GONE! Timely wicket for South Africa. This partnership was starting to look good, it accounted for 32 in 41 deliveries but it has now been cut short. Rabada now has a wicket to his name, so all the pacers have a wicket each. This is on a length and around off, Shafiq hangs his bat out, it takes the outside edge and flies towards Elgar at third slip. He takes it easily.
  • 18.2 Good ball around off, it pitches and then moves away. The batsman shoulders arms to it.
  • 18.1 Attacks the off pole and lands it on a length. Asad keeps it out.
  • 17.6 Full and on middle, Shan strokes it towards the bowler who makes a half-stop but no runs conceded. 51/3
  • 17.5 Once again angles it into the batter, Olivier works it through mid-wicket. They run the first one hard but have to settle for one.
  • 17.4 FOUR! Lovely shot! This is on middle, Shafiq stylishly flicks it through mid-wicket for back-to-back boundaries. 50 up for Pakistan. This is the 4th boundary in the last 3 overs.
  • 17.3 Almost drags it on! It has been short, short, short all this while from Olivier. Goes full, the surprise delivery. Shafiq tries to go too hard at it, the ball takes the inside edge and goes just past the leg stump and into the fine leg fence.
  • 17.2 Lands it on a length again outside off, Shafiq shoulders arms to it.
  • 17.1 On the pads, it is easily flicked through square leg for a single.
  • 16.6 Goes wide of the crease and angles it into the pads, Shafiq tries to flick but misses to get hit on it. 41/3
  • 16.5 Nicely struck but straight to the fielder! On a length and around off, Shafiq drives it on the up, it had boundary written all over it but finds the fielder at point.
  • 16.4 Back of a length around off, Shafiq defends it onto the ground.
  • 16.3 Wide outside off, left alone.
  • 16.2 FOUR! Too easy, you just do not stray on the pads of an Asian batsman, they love it there. Shafiq flicks it through mid-wicket and the ball races away to the fence. So 15 runs in the last 8 balls.
  • 16.1 A well-directed bouncer this one. Shafiq does well to evade it.
  • 15.6 On the back of a length around middle, the batsman works it to mid-wicket. 37/3
  • 15.5 A little too straight this time by Olivier, Shafiq flicks it through mid-wicket. It is not right off the middle but hit well enough for the batsmen to get three. So runs starting to come now for Pakistan.
  • 15.4 BEAUTY! Not a lot you can do about this delivery but just hope it misses the outside edge. On a length and around off, the ball pitches and then moves away. Shafiq plays inside the line and gets beaten.
  • 15.3 The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.
  • 15.2 FOUR BYES! Excellent comeback though by the bowler! Bangs this short and it is quick. Shafiq though does well to evade it at the very end. Quinton de Kock though this time has no chance in collecting the ball and it goes to the fine leg fence.
  • 15.1 FOUR! Pulled and pulled very well this one! Expected the short one, got into position early and pulls it hard through backward square leg. The ball races away to the fence.
  • 14.6 A good length delivery to end the over, Masood blocks it. 26/3
  • 14.5 On the shorter side outside off, Masood goes for the pull but then bails out of it.
  • 14.4 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
  • 14.3 Effort delivery this! The last two were around 140 KPH, this one is bowled at 147 KPH. It is on off, Masood gets right behind the line and blocks it.
  • 14.2 Lands it around off again, Masood gets right behind the line and keeps it out.
  • 14.1 Comes from around the wicket and lands it outside off, the batsman lets it be. Rabada does not seem to be bowling at his quickest here. He seems more content on releasing it and landing it on the right length.
  • 13.6 Good nut to end! On a length around off, the ball leaps up after pitching, also straightens a touch. Shafiq is a touch squared up as he tries to defend but gets hit on the arm and the ball rolls towards the off side. 26/3
  • 13.5 On a length again around off, Shafiq is solid in defense. Has looked confident in the way he has defended the ball so far.
  • 13.4 Attacks the off stump, the batsman defends it off the back foot.
  • 13.3 Length again outside off, Shafiq makes his second leave in a row. That is probably what we will see for a while. Both the players will now take their time and try and bail Pakistan out of trouble here.
  • 13.2 A little too wide outside off, Shafiq does not go chasing after it.
  • 13.1 On the shorter side, not very short though. Shafiq defends it onto the ground.
  • 12.6 Hits the length around off, Masood makes a leave. 26/3
  • 12.5 Another bouncer, Shan ducks under it.
  • 12.5 NO BALL! The bowler has overstepped! A marginal call but the umpire feels he has nothing behind the line. On a length outside off, it is left alone.
  • 12.4 Outside off, left alone.
  • 12.3 The batsman lets the ball go outside his off stump.
  • 12.2 On a length and around middle, Masood tries to flick but gets an inside edge onto his pads. The ball lobs towards the slip cordon but falls well short.
  • 12.1 SIX! All the way! Full marks to the bowler there but runs to the batsman. Short and on the body, Shan takes on the challenge of pulling, the ball though takes the top edge, goes over the keeper's head and over the fence. Not shy of taking on the short balls is Masood, we saw that in the last game and we are seeing that here.
  • 11.6 So Olivier continues to bang it short. Shafiq though ducks under it. 19/3
  • 11.5 Another bouncer it is outside off though. Shafiq lets it go to the keeper.
  • DRINKS BREAK. Pakistan need that badly. 70 balls of terror for them. Three wickets have gone down in the space of 42 deliveries and after being 9/0 at the end of the second over, they have managed just 10 in the next 9.4 overs. Frugality at its best. Meanwhile, Asad Shafiq has walked out to bat at number 5, replacing Azhar.
  • 11.4 OUT! A snorter there by Olivier to get Azhar for the third time in the series. Once again the batter has been bounced out. Olivier continues his good form as he strikes in the first over itself. On the shorter side, skids onto the batsman and also keeps rising. Ali tries to defend by hopping but the ball takes the outside edge and goes into the hands of Amla at first slip. The hosts are ecstatic as they know how big a wicket this is. Pakistan slip further.
  • 11.3 A sound there got the South Africans excited but it was of the bat hitting the pad. On a length around off, the ball pitches and then moves away. Ali tries to defend but the ball whizzes past the outside edge.
  • 11.2 Loose shot that! Short and very wide outside off, Ali throws his bat at it and gets beaten.
  • 11.2 Very good take there! A short ball on middle, Ali ducks under it. It keeps rising after it passes the batsman. De Kock jumps and with an out-stretched hand collects it.
  • 11.1 Starts off well by hitting the length hard on off, pushing the batsman back. Ali though does well to defend it onto the ground.
  • Duanne Olivier is on now. He was brilliant in the last game, can he do the same here?
  • 10.6 5 leaves in the over then as Masood yet again does not fiddle with a delivery outside the off pole. 18/2
  • 10.5 Outside off again, Masood does not offer a shot. So Rabada too is bowling like the man he replaced, way too wide.
  • 10.4 Goes fuller this time outside off, wanting Shan to go for a drive, he does not and lets it go through to the keeper.
  • 10.3 Lands it on a length again outside off, Shan is not interested in playing at it.
  • 10.2 Good length again outside off, Shan does not fiddle with it.
  • 10.1 Starts off with a back of a length ball around off, Shan gets right behind the line of the delivery and blocks it out.
  • Things just don't get easier for Pakistan here as Kagiso Rabada is on now.
  • 9.6 Outside off, left alone. 18/2
  • 9.5 That ball has taken the inside edge onto the pads.
  • 9.4 DIRECT HIT WOULD HAVE HAD AZHAR. On middle and leg, Ali flicks it towards mid-wicket and sets off for a single. Kagiso Rabada comes charging in and has a shy at the striker's end but misses. Azhar was a goner.
  • 9.3 Around middle and leg, helped through square leg for a single.
  • 9.2 The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot.
  • 9.1 Down the leg side, Azhar misses his flick and the ball goes off his pads through square leg. A leg bye taken.
  • 8.6 On the pads, Ali works it towards fine leg for a run. 16/2
  • 8.5 The ball is down the leg side but the batsman still goes after it.
  • 8.4 On the stumps, Ali keeps it out.
  • 8.4 Excellent delivery and very good take by Quinton. Short again and then one has a lot of fizz in it. Ali ducks under it. De Kock jumps full stretch and then collects it. The umpire though has signaled it as a wide.
  • 8.3 Slightly straighter this time, Ali tucks it to mid-wicket.
  • 8.2 A quicker bouncer this one at 142 KPH. Ali ducks under it.
  • 8.1 Lovely fielding! South Africa have their tails up at the moment! Full and on middle, looking to hit the pads of Ali, he does get his bat down in time and flicks it towards mid-wicket. Rabada there dives to his left and saves a boundary for his side.
  • 7.6 A single to end a successful over by Philander. This is on a length around off, shapes away a touch. Ali tries to defend it with soft hands but the ball takes the outside edge, goes through backward point and the batsmen take a run. 14/2
  • 7.5 The batsman chooses to leave the ball outside his off stump.
  • 7.4 Back of a length around off, AA is once again solid in defense.
  • 7.3 Goes back to bowling length around off, Ali lunges and keeps it out.
  • 7.2 Welcome to the crease Ali. An excellent delivery there by Philander. Bends his back on this one and bangs it short. It is also well-directed. Azhar may have been taken by surprise, he tries to fend but the ball hits his glove and rolls onto the leg side.
  • Azhar Ali is the new man in.
  • 7.1 OUT! LBW! 50th Test wicket at Cape Town for Philander and both the openers are back in the hut now, that too cheaply. Pakistan in trouble here. The inswinger gets the better of Imam this time. Philander learns from the previous two occasions, gets it fuller this time and bowls it around off, it tails back in. Imam does not account for the movement and tries to defend with a big stride forward. He misses and the ball thuds into his pads. An appeal follows and the umpire after giving a long thought, raises his finger. Imam walks upto his partner and then reviews. Replays roll in and they show that the ball is clipping the top of off. Umpire's call it is and Imam has to continue his long walk back. Pakistan don't lose a review though.
  • 6.6 The ball is too wide on the off side for the batsman to make any contact. 13/1
  • 6.5 FOUR! Really good pull shot that by Shan! Slightly short, Shan picks the length up early and pulls it through mid-wicket. The ball races away. Shan gets off the mark in style.
  • 6.4 Another one wide outside off, the batter need not play at those.
  • 6.3 No carry on this one! Outside off and the batsman makes a leave, the ball goes on the bounce to the keeper.
  • 6.2 A bumper this time by Steyn, Shan ducks under it.
  • 6.1 Back of a length around off, Shan gets right behind the line and defends it out. SO 25 BALLS have passed since a run has been scored.
  • 5.6 Ends the over with a delivery outside off, Imam makes another leave. A maiden by Philander, not a threatening one. 9/1
  • 5.5 Back of a length around off, Imam goes back and blocks it out.
  • 5.4 Nicely timed but for no runs! Vernon goes fuller on middle, Imam strokes it towards mid on where Olivier makes a good stop.
  • 5.3 Well left in the end! On a length and outside off, Imam first thinks of playing at it but at the very end, shoulders arms to it.
  • 5.2 The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
  • 5.1 Slants this away from outside off, Imam makes a leave.
  • 4.6 Outside off, left alone. End of a successful over by Steyn. 9/1
  • Shah Masood is the new man in.
  • 4.5 OUT! What a brute of a delivery that is! That took off from nowhere. Just unplayable from Steyn. He has not been at his best today, but such is the class of that man, he can produce something out of nothing. He bends his back on this one, bowls it just behind a length around middle. Zaman has his weight on the front foot but then has to go back. The ball though hurries onto him and also the bounce gets big on him. He tries to fend at it with both feet in the air. It hits the splice and lobs behind the stumps. Bavuma from gully runs in and takes an easy catch. An early wicket for South Africa and Zaman walks back for a cheap score. Ideal start for the hosts.
  • 4.4 This is what Steyn should be bowling more, he normally does so but not started well today. On a length and around off, Zaman defends it to gully.
  • 4.3 Once again a direction-less delivery, way outside off, an easy leave for Zaman.
  • 4.2 Nicely timed! Slightly fuller in length on middle, Zaman punches it back towards the bowler who makes a good stop in his followthrough.
  • 4.1 On a length outside off, still too wide, left alone.
  • 3.6 Good length and around off, Imam blocks it out. End of a testing over by Philander. He has started off well, his partner though has not been upto the mark as of now. 9/0
  • 3.5 Goes back to bowling in-dippers, this time though he bowls a little too straight. Imam tries to flick but misses to get hit on the pads once again.
  • 3.4 Slants this one across the batsman, wanting Imam to go after it. The batter resists and lets it be.
  • 3.3 Errs in line this time as he sprays it down the leg side, Imam tries to flick but misses.
  • 3.2 Another appeal! Once again, the inswinger causing a problem for Imam. This time slightly fuller around middle, it comes back in sharply. Imam lunges and tries to block but gets beaten on the inside edge. It hits him on the pads, lower than the previous delivery but the umpire once again shakes his head. You need to be a little fuller here in Cape Town due to the bounce.
  • 3.1 HUGE SHOUT BUT NOT GIVEN! On a length and around middle, this one pitches and jags back in sharply. Imam tries to keep it out but does not account for the movement. He misses, the ball hits him high on the pads, an appeal follows but the umpire shakes his head. Philander knew it was high or he would surely be in the ears of his skipper, wanting to review that.
  • 2.6 A good nut to end! On a length and around off, it pitches and then moves away. Zaman tries to defend but is beaten by the away movement. Another harmless over by Steyn comes to ane end. 9/0
  • 2.5 Wasting the new ball here Steyn. He has bowled outside off on a consistent basis till now, does so once again, the batsman just need not play those.
  • 2.4 Changes the length this time and bangs it short outside off, Zaman looks to drag his pull through the leg side, he gets beaten though.
  • 2.3 Again goes back to bowling wide outside off, not the line Faf wants Steyn to bowl. Zaman makes an easy leave.
  • 2.2 Perfect! Finds the edge as soon as he bowls it around off. Luckily for Zaman though it lands short of the man at gully. Two gullies in place for the opener.
  • 2.1 Another delivery outside off, Zaman need not play at those. Steyn has been a little too wide in the 7 balls he has bowled.
  • 1.6 FOUR! TOP SHOT! A good way to the over for Pakistan. Philander goes full, he ends up serving a half volley. Imam says thank you very much as he times it through mid off. Olivier gives it a chase, dives but his effort goes in vain. Second boundary of the game and both have been hit by Imam. 9/0
  • 1.5 A good leave that in the end! It was pitched around off and on a length, comes back in just a little. Imam makes a leave and the ball goes over the off pole. So after watching that delivery, the pitch like expected, does have good carry.
  • 1.4 Zaman is off the mark now! Slightly straighter this time by Philander, Zaman nudges it through square leg and takes a single.
  • 1.3 Well bowled and well played! It is bowled in the corridor of uncertainty, Zaman knows where his off stump is, covers it, plays inside the line and lets the ball go to the keeper.
  • 1.2 Closer to the off pole this time, he tries to get it to shape away so that the ball takes the edge. However, it goes straight on, Zaman gets behind the line and defends it onto the ground.
  • 1.1 This is why he has been picked in the team, comes back from injury and straightaway starts off with a lovely delivery. Lands it on a length around off, gets it to move away from Zaman a little late. Fakhar is drawn into the stroke as he tries to defend it away from the body but luckily for him the ball whizzes past the outside edge.
  • 0.6 Full again but no swing available, Imam reaches out to it and strokes it to covers. 4/0
  • 0.5 4th leave in the over as once again Steyn bowls it outside off. This time though slightly fuller as he gave the ball an opportunity to swing but it did not.
  • 0.4 Once again it is a little too wide outside off, Imam shoulders arms to it.
  • 0.3 FOUR! So the first ball which hits the bat, races to the fence. On the off pole this time around off, Imam tries to defend it with an open face of the bat, it goes off the outer half, through backward point and to the fence. Pakistan are underway.
  • 0.2 Slightly closer to the off pole this time, not close enough though to make the batsman play. Two leaves in a row to begin this Test.
  • 0.1 Starts off with a wide delivery outside off, Steyn was probably trying to curl the ball back into the left-hander. However, there was no swing on offer and Imam makes a comfortable leave.
  • We are all set for the action to begin! Out come the South African players and they are followed by the Pakistan openers, Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq. Dale Steyn will start the proceedings for South Africa. Three slips and a gully in place for him. Here we go...
  • Team news - Expected changes from both the sides as Abbas is straightaway into the team for Hasan, whereas, Philander comes in for Maharaj.
  • TOSS - South Africa win the toss and elect to field.
  • South Africa on the other hand, will be eager to seal the series here itself. With all that has happened in the last few days and also playing in familiar conditions, they are favorites to do so. Can a morale-deflated Pakistan side step up to the occasion or will the hosts blow them away? Stay tuned to find out.
  • It is now time for the visitors to put their off-field issues behind and concentrate on the real deal. A must-win game for them if they are to keep the series alive. They had their moments in the first Test but could not capitalize, this time though Sarfraz would hope for a complete performance from his side.
  • Hola there, cricket fans! How are you? Excited or exhausted? If you have been following the Australia-India Test, then we really admire you for sticking up so long. We are not done yet with the first day of international action in the New Year. South Africa and Pakistan are ready to celebrate in a while. Hello and a warm welcome to the opening day of the second Test in Cape Town.

South Africa Vs Pakistan Live Score (TEST) Ball by Ball Commentary

  • South Africa will be more than pleased with this. Not only have they got a healthy lead, but they must have surely worn out the Pakistan players a little more. With the wicket misbehaving as it has been, the hosts will be raring to have a go with the ball. The action will begin shortly. Don't go anywhere.
  • So the Proteas have been dismissed rather early, but not before they got some quick and vital runs from the tail. De Kock and Philander, the overnight batsmen, the more recognized ones, were sent back by Amir rather quickly. He got Rabada early too and it seemed like they could contain them for quite less, but Steyn and Olivier found the fence on several occasions which took the lead past 250.
  • 124.1 OUT! That should do it. Pakistan have got the final wicket. Short ball from around the wicket, on middle and off, Steyn backs away to slap it over covers. Gets a top edge to the same area where Fakhar Zaman takes a simple catch. SOUTH AFRICA HAVE BEEN BOWLED OUT FOR 431!
  • 123.6 Full ball on middle and leg, flicked to deep mid-wicket for a single. 12 runs off this one, an entertaining over comes to an end. 431/9
  • 123.5 That's got to hurt. Seeing Steyn give the charge, Amir pounds it in short outside leg. It catches the batsman on the helmet as he tries to take the pull shot on. No harm done though, he seems to be alright.
  • 123.5 No ball! Third's time a charm. Amir oversteps for the third straight occasion and this time the umpire spots it. Back of a length around off, Steyn fails to make connection.
  • 123.4 SIX! That's outta here! Wonderful stuff, Dale Steyn. The off cutter on the stumps, fuller in length, the batsman stays leg side and slogs it over mid-wicket for a maximum. Amir has overstepped again, the umpire has missed it once more.
  • 123.3 A little short, Steyn once again swings across the line but makes no connection. Amir overstepped by a huge margin there, but the umpire didn't spot it.
  • 123.2 Good length ball rising off the surface, Steyn swings hard but fails to connect.
  • 123.1 FOUR! Now Dale Steyn joins in on the fun. Doesn't want to be left out. It's full and in his arc, he clears his front leg, picks his spot and lofts it over mid on for a boundary.
  • 122.6 FOUR! 11 off the over, expensive one from Afridi. All these are bonus runs for South Africa. Back of a length outside off, Olivier plays at it and it goes off the edge. Flies well past gully and away to the third man fence. 419/9
  • 122.5 Around off, defended from within the crease.
  • 122.4 Back of a length outside off, it goes off the outer half and past gully. The fielder chases it down and keeps the batsmen down to two.
  • 122.3 FOUR! That is a terrific shot. It's banged in short and Olivier takes the pull shot on. Connects perfectly as he hits it over square leg for a boundary.
  • 122.2 Back of a length close to off, kept out safely.
  • 122.1 Starts from around the wicket, a length ball angling in on off, Steyn plays it from the outer half square on the off side for a run.

  • 121.5 A little bit of movement away, fuller and around off, Olivier plays inside the line and gets beaten.
  • 121.4 Full inswinging delivery on off, Olivier brings down a straight blade in defense.
  • Duanne Olivier to bat next.
  • 121.3 OUT! Rolling back the years are you, Amir? That's an absolute ripper. What a sight to behold. Superb delivery. Pitches it full on middle and it swings away ever so much, Rabada plays down the wrong line and that's his undoing. All three stumps are shattered. Amazing.
  • 121.2 Full delivery on off, Steyn drives it on the up to mid off and takes a single.
  • Dale Steyn is the next batsman in.
  • 121.1 OUT! Bowled 'em! That's the second one down for the morning. Beautiful delivery from Mohammad Amir. Bowls a length ball on off and makes it come back in late. Philander plays away from his body, gets an inside edge and drags it back onto the stumps. Pakistan celebrate. South Africa lead by 230 runs.

  • 120.5 Good length ball around off, kept out from the back foot.
  • 120.4 FOUR! Not what he intended to do, but gets runs for it. Rabada has a little laugh at it too. Full delivery angling in on off, Rabada looks to push down the ground but it goes off the inner half and past mid-wicket. Afridi gives it the chase but can't keep it inside the rope.
  • 120.3 A little ahead of a length, close to off, Kagiso is forward in defense.
  • 120.2 FOUR! Spills it on the pads and pays the price. Abbas bowls it full and Rabada flicks it fine down the leg side for a boundary.
  • 120.1 Lands it on a length on middle and leg, flicked into the leg side for nothing.
  • 119.6 Angling across Philander, outside off, he lets it be. 397/7
  • 119.5 Outside off, it goes off the outer half past gully for one.

  • 119.3 The batsman has flicked the ball off his pads. One run added to the total.
  • 119.2 Too straight in line, worked away on the leg side.
  • 119.1 Sharp bounce. On a back of a length, on off, Philander is taken by surprise as the ball takes the glove and hits him on the thigh pad.
  • 118.6 Back of a length on off, Rabada looks to play at it and gets an inside edge which hits his boot and rolls beside the off stump. 395/7
  • 118.5 Length ball cutting back in on middle, played off the inner half in front of mid-wicket.
  • 118.4 Angling away from outside off, steered to point with an angled bat to point.
  • 118.3 Sharp bumper, close to off, takes Rabada by surprise as he barely manages to sway away from the line.
  • 118.2 On the shorter side of things, into the body, Vernon with a little swivel pulls it down to fine leg for a single.
  • 118.1 Short ball banged in, ducked and evaded by the batsman.
  • Kagiso Rabada walks out to bat.
  • 117.6 OUT! Edged and gone! Pakistan will enjoy this. Amir strikes in his very first over. Just behind a length, outside off, de Kock just loosely plays at this. Gets a thick edge and it flies to Asad Shafiq at second slip. He dives to his left and takes a good catch. The dangerous de Kock is dismissed, this is the best start possible for the visitors. 394/7
  • 117.5 FOUR! Poor line and it's duly punished. Full and on the pads, de Kock flicks it neatly past the diving mid-wicket fielder and finds the fence. Too easy for a player of his quality.
  • 117.4 Coming in at first but then shaping away late, on a length around off. Quinton de Kock is watchful as he presents the full face of the bat.
  • 117.3 Hurled too far outside off, the southpaw raises his bat and lets it through.
  • 117.2 Touch straight in line, worked square on the leg side but for no run.
  • 117.1 Good length delivery in the channel outside off, de Kock has nothing to do with it.

  • 116.5 FOUR! First runs of the morning and what a beautiful shot from Vernon Philander. Full and outside off, he just leans into the drive and caresses it through the covers for a boundary.
  • 116.4 Full delivery angling in on middle and leg, driven back down the ground towards mid on.
  • 116.3 The pitch already misbehaving. The last one didn't bounce and this took off. Shaping back in from around off, on a length, Vernon leaves it alone.

  • 116.1 Good length delivery just around off, Philander comes half forward and defends it down on the off side.
  • We are ready to get underway. Quinton de Kock walks out to the middle with Vernon Philander. Mohammad Abbas will start proceedings off with the ball. Two slips and a gully in place. Here we go...
  • Welcome for the third, and what could cynically be considered, as the last day of this Newlands Test. South Africa already have a lead of 205 runs, that is largely down to the heroics of captain Faf and Bavuma. De Kock then piled the pressure on and is unbeaten on 55 with Philander to partner him. Pakistan have looked toothless with the ball, and Abbas seemingly still struggling with injury hasn't aided their cause either. Will their batting come to the party finally? Because that's the only thing that can save them. We'll find out soon enough what unfolds.
  • ... Day 3, Session 1 ...
  • The ball firmly in South Africa's court as things stand. They will try to add another 50-60 runs at least and then have a go at the away side with the ball. Pakistan, well, will try to wrap up the remaining Protea wickets ASAP. The action from Day 3 will begin at 1030 local (0830 GMT). Do join in for that. Cheers!
  • Afridi eventually dismissed both Bavuma and du Plessis, which did give them something to smile about, but de Kock didn't let that last long. He motored himself along to a fluent fifty and extended the lead to 205. Pakistan bowled well for the most part, just that luck wasn't on their side. Also a few dropped chances did not aid their cause. It was a long day for the visitors on the field.
  • South Africa's day without a doubt. They have taken this Test match into their stride and it's all thanks to the fine work from du Plessis and Bavuma. After Abbas and Afridi took out Amla and de Bruyn in the first hour, the Faf-Temba pair completely stole the show. It added 156 runs, with Bavuma scoring a fine 75 and the skipper notching up a skillful ton.
  • 115.6 Quicker and flatter on middle, de Kock works it towards mid-wicket. AND THAT IS STUMPS ON DAY 2. SOUTH AFRICA ARE 382/6. AND LEAD BY 205 RUNS. 382/6

  • 115.4 The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.
  • 115.3 NOT OUT! Quinton de Kock survives. Yasir flights it up on middle, de Kock tries to defend it off the front foot. The ball spins back sharply, hitting the pads and it lobs up in the air. Sarfraz comes forward and collects it. Sarfraz straightaway goes for the review. He is confident that it has hit his bat. The replay shows no ultraedge and the de Kock survives. • 108.6 OUT! Finally a wicket for Pakistan. Faf du Plessis departs. What an innings from the captain. He was under pressure coming into this Test after getting ducks in both the innings of the first Test. Coming to the delivery, it is a length delivery on off, Faf du Plessis tries to defend it, but gets a faint edge on it and straight to the keeper. Sarfraz thinks about it and goes for the review. The replay shows there is some spike on the bat and Faf has to make the long walk back to the pavilion. He has grinded out as it was tough to play in the morning session. Standing ovation for the captain for his outstanding knock. He deserves it. He has made sure that South Africa are in a commanding position after the end of day's play. 356/6

  • 103.2 A huge appeal but not given! On a length and around off, it comes back in after pitching. De Kock tries to defend but the ball hits him high on the pad.
  • 103.1 100 for Faf du Plessis, his 9th in Test cricket and what an innings this has been. He came out when they had lost two quick wickets and he has shown excellent character here on a wicket which is very difficult to bat on. Copped a few blows but continued to craft a brilliant innings. He gets to the milestone with another excellently timed shot. It is slightly full and around off, he strokes it through covers. It does not have enough legs to get to the boundary but the batsmen run three. He pumps his fist as he completes the third. Takes his helmet off and soaks in all the applause by the crowd. Well deserved. Well played skipper, you have led from the front here.

  • 102.2 DROPPED! Huge moment in the game. Fuller on leg, du Plessis flicks it and Sarfraz goes to his left and he gets both his hands to it and still drops it. Lazy effort from Sarfraz behind the stumps. He should have caught it. That was a sitter. Sarfraz normally takes brilliant catches but he will be disappointed with that effort. Abbas is frustrated as well. Luck is not going their way today, with some play and misses and edges not carrying. That wicket would have changed the momentum. Is that the turning point of the game? We have to wait and watch.

  • 98.1 Landing on middle and it shapes back in, catches de Kock on the front pad and a loud appeal goes up. Height is always the issue.

  • 95.5 So easily could have been three in a row! Full and on off, asking to be hit. De Kock drives it firmly but straight to the man at covers. A little to the left or the right and it would have been three in a row.
  • 95.4 FOUR! Back-to-back boundaries for de Kock to begin with. This is short and outside off, de Kock waits for it and then guides it through short third man for another boundary.
  • 95.3 FOUR! A gift for de Kock on the first ball. A full toss on the pads, de Kock says thank you very much as he flicks it through backward square leg for a boundary.

  • 95.2 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Shaheen Afridi provides the breakthrough Pakistan so desperately wanted. Ends the 150-plus run stand, ends a magnificent knock by Bavuma on a very, very difficult wicket. He walks off to a standing ovation and he deserves every bit of it. Coming to the ball now, it is on a length and around off, it is angled into the batter first, Bavuma tries to play the original trajectory but it pitches and then moves away. Takes the outside edge and Sarfraz takes a good catch diving to his right. Can this now open the floodgates? Pakistan will hope so.
  • 95.1 FOUR! That went to the fence like a tracer bullet. It is short and on the body, Bavuma helps it on its way to the fine leg fence. No stopping those.

Excellent use of the review there. Unfortunate for Pakistan. They can't believe it has not gone in their favour. The look on their faces says it all. They were in desperate need of this wicket, they felt they had got it only for the DRS to overturn the decision.

  • Brilliant session for South Africa. They have scored at around three runs per over and have gone wicketless. The captain, Faf du Plessis and Temba Bavuma are amidst a 132-run stand and are taking the game away from the visitors. They have dominated the bowlers and would look to do the same in the last session. For the visitors, they have not been at their best, leaking easy runs. However, with the new ball being taken, Sarfraz will be hoping for the fast bowlers to take some wickets and wrap the innings up as soon as possible. Could be a defining session for both the teams.

  • 35.6 BEAUTY! You just can't do a lot about those deliveries! First it is angled into the batsman so Faf has to play at it. It then pitches and shapes away. Faf du Plessis can't adjust to the movement and the ball whizzes past the outside edge. 129/3

It is a tad short on off, Amla shuffles across to his off pole, the ball hits one of the crack and jags back in a long way. Amla then tries to flick it with the movement but fails to put bat on ball. It uproots the leg stump. Amla has a puzzled look on his face. Maybe he never expected the ball to deviate so much. Huge wicket for the visitors. Also, it was the similar length to which Markram was dismissed. That is probably the length Pakistan should be bowling on consistent basis.

  • Hello and welcome to Day 2 of the second Test between South Africa and Pakistan. The hosts are in a commanding position at the moment and they will look to have a stronger hold on the game by the end of today. A big lead is what they will be looking for on a wicket which seems to have eased off. Pakistan on the other hand, need a few quick wickets if they are to get back in the game. They need one of their bowlers to step up and deliver the goods. Will someone do so? Also, we saw the bowlers dominate yesterday, will we see the same today? Stay tuned to find out in a while.
  • ... Day 2, Session 1 ...
  • Now then, what will we have in store for us on Day 2? Will the hosts continue the domination or will Pakistan fight back? Join us to find out at 1030 local (0830 GMT). Till then, take care and goodbye!
  • Credit though has to be given to the Protea bowlers. Earlier in the day, they made quick work of the Pakistan batting line-up and bundled them out for a pretty low score with all the bowlers taking a wicket at least. Olivier was the star once again as he finished with a four-fer. For Pakistan, had it not been for their skipper who scored a half ton, even getting to 100 would have been difficult. In reply, The South African batters have started off really well and they would now look to continue the same.
  • A wicket right at the end gives Pakistan something to smile about. However, it has been all South Africa today. They head into Day 2 in a very commanding position, courtesy some outstanding batting by their top order in the final session. First it was Markram and Elgar who added a 56-run stand, then the former, along with Amla, stitched another 50-plus stand. The opener was dismissed in an unfortunate manner after playing a fluent innings. One though would feel he has done a good enough job for his side. The hosts trail by only 54 more runs and have a lot of batting to come.
  • 29.6 OUT! TIMBER! Wicket off the last ball of the day. And it comes from the most unlikely source - Shan Masood. What a masterstroke from Sarfraz Ahmed. Delight for Pakistan. However, this is a very fortunate dismissal for them. Nothing Markram could have done about that. It is a touch short on off, it pitches and jags back. Keeps very low. It almost seemed like it never left the ground. Markram tries to defend it from the crease but then seeing the bad bounce, tries to adjust, is not able to do so and the ball knocks the off stump out. Markram can't believe it as he trudges off in disgust. He was looking all set for a big one but luck was not on his side. THAT WILL ALSO BE STUMPS ON DAY 1. SOUTH AFRICA ARE 123/2. 123/2

South Africa Vs Pakistan Live Score (TEST) Ball by Ball Commentary

  • 41 runs is what the hosts need and Pakistan require 10 wickets to win the game. The former result looks the more likelier one. However, as we know, cricket is a game of uncertainty but a South Africa win, looks certain today. Anything other than that, we will probably be witnessing a miracle. Welcome you to the coverage of the first session of Day 4 which could also be the last one of the Test. Stay tuned to catch all the action.
  • ... Day 4, Session 1 ...
  • The question is how long on Day 4? A session? That is what I believe. Also, another question is, can South Africa win with 10 wickets in the bag or will Pakistan make them work for the runs they need? All these questions will be answered on Sunday at 1030 local (0830 GMT). Till then, take care and goodbye!
  • Earlier in the day, the South Africans swelled their lead to 254 before being bundled out. Then they managed to pick a couple of wickets after Lunch. An innings defeat looked certain but then, Asad Shafiq and Shan Masood showed great character. The two added 132 runs and let me tell you, the partnership was a very entertaining one. However, once the two departed, nobody except for Babar Azam showed some fight. A cluster of wickets in the last session more or less seals the deal for the hosts.
  • 7 wickets, that's what fell in the last session! Asad Shafiq was the first one to go early after the break. Then the procession began and Dale Steyn was the tormentor-in-chief. He bagged a four-fer and at one stage an innings defeat looked on the cards. However, a fighting knock by Babar Azam ensured that Pakistan take the lead. They would have liked a bigger one but credit to the fight they showed. They did not surrender and managed to avoid an innings defeat.
  • So after a discussion between Faf du Plessis and the umpires, we see Elgar walking back slowly towards the dressing room. De Kock too is taking his own time to get there which means PLAY WON'T BE EXTENDED. There will be a Day 4 and South Africa will come out to bat with a target of 41 in front of them.
  • 70.4 OUT! That's the final wicket down for the visitors. Back of a length ball in line of the stumps, Afridi backs away, swings hard across the line and the ball takes a big top edge. It skies towards mid-wicket where Philander comes running from mid on and takes it safely. Pakistan are bowled out for 294. A TARGET OF 41 is set for South Africa.
  • 70.3 Hits this through the covers and gets two runs for it.
  • 70.2 Low full toss just outside off, Afridi reaches out to play at it but gets a bottom edge which goes past the stumps.

  • 69.6 Length ball around off, a play and a miss from the batsman. 291/9

  • 69.4 Back of a length in line of the stumps, Afridi wildly swings but misses.
  • 69.3 In the air and it's safe! Afridi clears his front leg and looks to go big over the leg side. Gets a big top edge and it skies in the mid-wicket area. Olivier there runs behind as the ball comes over his shoulders, dives but can't get his hands to it. Always a difficult one. Two runs taken.
  • 69.2 THAT'S NASTY! Afridi falls to the ground. Extremely fierce and sharp from Steyn. Short ball on leg, Afridi looks to duck out of the way but is struck on the helmet. Luckily, no damage done. But what a ball!
  • 69.1 Edged and FOUR! Short ball banged in, Afridi swings and gets it off the top edge. It flies over the keeper's head and races away to the boundary line behind.
  • 68.6 Length delivery around off, kept out from inside the crease. 279/9
  • 68.6 NOT OUT! Philander has overstepped. Oh, how unfortunate for him and South Africa. Fuller length ball, Abbas backs a long way away and swings hard. It takes the top edge and skies towards mid off, where Rabada takes a good catch. But all in vain, as the umpire takes it upstairs and checks for the front foot no ball. And it doesn't turn out well for the hosts. De Kock had already entered the dressing room, he has to come back out now. He's so disappointed. It's all a bit funny.
  • 68.5 Bouncer from Philander, ducked and evaded.
  • 68.4 FOUR! Abbas is having some fun now. Length ball on off stump, he just stands tall and slogs it over mid on for a boundary.

  • Shaheen Afridi is the last man in for Pakistan.

It was on a length on off, Babar leans forward and tries to defend it, but gets a thick outside edge on it and the ball goes straight to the first slip fielder, Hashim Amla, who takes a simple catch. A brilliant innings of 72 comes to an end. South Africa require 1 more wicket to finish the Pakistan innings. 270/9

  • 65.6 Once again a dot to end the over! Full and on off, Azam strokes it to cover. 262/8
  • 65.5 FOUR! Over the slip fielder! Azam is luckly there. Steyn almost gets a fifer. This was a brute. On a length and it takes off after pitching. Azam tries to fend by hopping but the ball hits the glove and goes over the first slip fielder and into the third man fence.
  • 65.4 Now then, this is strange. Steyn shortens his run up by at least 5 yards and lands it on a length. Azam keeps it out.
  • 65.3 Goes fuller on off, Azam strokes it to mid off.
  • 65.2 Back of a length on off, it is kept out.
  • 65.1 And Abbas takes a single off the first ball itself! It is on a length and on the body, Abbas flicks it uppishly, past the short leg fielder even before he can react, towards square leg for a run.
  • 64.6 No he does not! It will be Abbas who will face the start of the next as Azam strokes it on the up to cover-point. 257/8
  • 64.5 A little shorter in length, Azam goes back and punches it towards covers. One ball to go now, can Azam find a single?

  • 63.5 Too far outside off, an easy leave for the tailender.
  • 63.4 On the fifth stump line, a length delivery which zips off the surface. Mohammad Abbas is beaten once again.
  • 63.3 Sharp bouncer, outside off, ducked and evaded.
  • 63.2 Back of a length outside off, Abbas hangs his bat inside the line and gets beaten again.
  • 63.1 Absolute beauty from Dale Steyn! Lands it on a length on off and it moves away ever so slightly, Abbas tries to poke at it and is beaten. That missed the edge by a whisker.
  • 62.6 Outside off on a good length, left alone. 257/8
  • 62.5 FOUR! Top edge and away! Pakistan are now in the lead, by 3 runs. Short ball and Babar takes the pull shot on. It goes off the top edge and flies over the keeper's head. The umpires talk amongst themselves, think about whether to signal it as a wide or not, but then decide it's not high enough for that.
  • 62.5 Wide! Short ball down the leg side, wide signalled.
  • 62.4 Azam punches this down towards mid on. Both batsmen are halfway down the track, think about whether to take the run or not, but don't so do. Funny enough, they could have had two.
  • 62.3 Shaping away from outside off, on a length, dabbed to point with an open face.
  • 62.2 Short ball just outside off, Azam lets it through.
  • 62.1 Bumper on middle stump, Babar pulls it to deep mid-wicket. Understandably so, he doesn't take the run.
  • 61.6 That's a very good block. Attacking the off stump, on a bit of a fuller length, Abbas defends it with a straight bat. Pakistan still trail by 2 runs. 252/8

  • 59.5 FOUR! Didn't connect well but it's enough to fetch him a boundary. Full and wide outside off, Azam drives it off the outer half through point for a boundary.
  • 59.4 Fullish in length and outside off, pushed into the covers.
  • 59.3 The batsman lets the ball go outside his off stump.
  • 59.2 Full and outside off, driven straight to the cover fielder.
  • Mohammad Abbas is the next batsman for Pakistan.
  • 59.1 OUT! Steyn with his fourth wicket of the game. Yasir Shah departs. It is banged in short on middle, Yasir pulls it, but gets a top edge and the ball flies towards deep fine leg. The substitute fielder Zubayr Hamza takes a brilliant catch just inside the ropes. The fielder was kept just for that shot. Faf du Plessi's plan worked perfectly. He placed the fielder almost right behind the keeper and the ball goes straight to the fielder and Yasir fell in his trap. Pakistan now trail by 7 runs and they need two more wickets to wrap up the innings.
  • 58.6 FOUR! 11th Test fifty for Babar Azam! Brings it up in superb fashion as well. Stands tall to this back of a length delivery and pulls it through square leg for a boundary. 247/7
  • 58.5 Short of a length angling down, goes off the batsman's hips and falls on the leg side. A leg bye is collected.
  • 58.4 Works this in front of square leg and gets to the other end.

  • 57.1 Width on offer outside off, Babar cuts it square through point for one run.
  • 56.6 Back of a length around off, defended from the back foot. 222/7
  • 56.5 Had no clue about it. Fierce bumper from Olivier. On middle stump, rises onto the batsman, Shah looks to fend it away but it goes off his glove and lobs ove the slip cordon. Third man tries to run in and catch it, but it falls short of him.
  • 56.4 A tame pull from Yasir. He helps it down on the leg side.

  • 55.1 Fuller on off, Azam drives it towards point.
  • 54.6 Bowls it wide down leg, Amir does not need to play at those. 220/6
  • 54.5 Similar delivery, same result.
  • The physio is out to look at Amir. He copped a blow on his palm and as a result, the magic spray is out. We'll have a slight halt in play.
  • 54.4 OUCH! That was nasty. Olivier bangs it short on middle, Amir tries to fend it but was too late on it. It hits him directly on the gloves. That surely will hurt him.
  • 54.3 Short of a length on off, Amir stands tall and guides it towards point.
  • Mohammad Amir is the new man in for Pakistan.
  • 54.2 OUT! Wickets clipping and the captain has to make the long walk back to the pavilion. Olivier with the breakthrough. It was bowled a touch short on off, the ball jags back in sharply and keeps a bit low. Sarfraz in his crease has no clue whatsoever. He is rapped on the front pad while trying to defend. • .... Day 3, Session 3 ....
  • For the first time in this Test match, you could say it's Pakistan's session. 140 runs were scored at a run rate of 5.60 - unbelievable, isn't it? The visitors' dressing room gives a round of applause to the two men walking back. These two hours were all about the now departed Masood and the unbeaten Shafiq (for now). The two scored their respective fifties and assimilated 132 runs between them, taking the attack to the South African pacers. Masood remains steady, while Shafiq did just the opposite. Would have been perfect for them too, had Steyn now dismissed the opener a little before the break. This contest has suddenly come alive, and it could get real interesting if the batsmen to follow can do their part. Pakistan still trail by 77. A super final session awaits us.
  • 39.6 FOUR! A loosener outside off from Steyn, Babar Azam just crashes this through the covers for another boundary. Steyn didn't get as much swing as he'd have liked, hence the result. TEA ON DAY 3! 177/3

  • 37.5 OUT! And the Steyn Gun fires just at the right time. This is the quality the leading Test wicket-taker for the hosts possesses. South Africa needed this. This partnership was motoring along and really threatening the Proteas, but Dale Steyn has brought it to an end. He dismisses Shan Masood, a player who has shown great class and temperament to stand tall against the home side so far. Amazing batting display. He couldn't do much about this one as he had no choice. Steyn pitched it on a length quite close to off, around the corridor, and made him play. Masood had a feel for it and edged it behind for de Kock to collect it. End of the 132-run stand. Masood walks back to a standing ovation from his teammates in the dressing room.

South Africa Vs Pakistan Live Score (TEST) Ball by Ball Commentary

  • Another clinical performance from the hosts and they have won another series as well. They completely dominated the 2 Test matches and now would be looking for a whitewash. Pakistan on the other hand will try and avoid that. Will they be able to do so? Join us on the 11th of January at 1000 local (0800 GMT) to find out. Till then, take care and goodbye!
  • South African skipper and Man of the Match, Faf du Plessis, starts by saying he is happy he finally got a ton on his favorite ground. Further adds it is an amazing stadium and he is delighted he got a ton here. Mentions it was a gutsy effort from his team. States they enjoy playing here as the crowd is always right behind them. Reckons they are doing well at home and they want to keep the good work up. He feels the wicket got easier to bat on as the days progressed and he was fortunate to win the toss. All-in-all he says the wicket was good for both, the batters and the bowlers. Informs playing 4 pacers was their plan and it worked out quite well for them. Ends by saying he still feels the pressure of not scoring a lot, he remembered the good innings he has played and managed to do well here.
  • Pakistan skipper, Sarfraz Ahmed, says they did not have enough runs on the board in the first innings and they weren't able to restrict the South Africans too. Reckons the first couple of hours was really tough on Day 1 and they could not cope with it. Feels a couple more of practice matches before the Test series would have helped. He hopes of doing well in the third Test.
  • An innings defeat looked certain especially when Pakistan went into Lunch on Day 3 after losing two wickets. But half tons from Asad Shafiq, Babar Azam and Shan Masood saved their blushes. Especially the partnership between Masood and Shafiq which accounted for 132 runs. They did manage to worry the South Africans for a little while but a cluster of wickets in the last session on Day 3 with Rababad and Steyn both picking 4 each, saw the home side needing 41 on Day 4 which they knocked off easily. Stay tuned for the presentation.
  • In reply, it seemed, the hosts were batting on a completely different wicket. They had three batsman scoring fifties and their skipper, leading from the front with an outstanding ton. They batted close to 125 overs and took a big lead of 254.
  • It was a combined effort from them. Their bowlers first, justified their skipper's decision by bundling the visitors out for a paltry total. All the pacers picked a wicket at least, Steyn and Olivier were the pick as the former finished with a three-fer and the latter with a four-fer.
  • End of a commanding performance by an impressive team on home soil. Also, it is South Africa's 7th series win in a row at home. This was never in doubt when they came out to bat today morning, it was just a matter of how long will they take and it took them 59 balls to knock off these 41 runs. They did lose de Bruyn and Amla did walk off injured but Faf and Elgar ensured they complete the job and seal the series with a game to go.
