  • 292 to win then, on a two-paced track. Australia would have to play out of their skins to chase this down. Stay tuned for their reply.
  • The 5th bowler hurt Australia as Marsh and Short went for 70 in 10 overs combined. Starc and Hazlewood were good in patches while Cummins and Zampa were excellent. Now, the fielding. It was extremely shoddy, something which you would expect Aaron Finch to speak about in the post-match presentation. They could have saved at least 15-20 runs, but for their lacklustre effort.
  • It was Heinrich Klaasen who summed up the pitch to perfection. Did not play too many strokes till he got to his 70s and only after being set, did he play his shots. Batsmen either side of him struggled to adapt to the conditions, even David Miller, who still got to 64 but played shots worth yielding 128. And that is where Australia let loose the grip.
  • Good finish by Australia but South Africa would be very happy with this total. They were staring down the barrel at 126/4 in the 27th over but Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller took the game away. The Aussies let the Proteas off the hook as a wicket there could have seen the Saffas get bundled under 200.
  • Heinrich Klaasen has a chat with Mark Nicholas. Says that it is an unbelievable feeling to get to that century. Agrees that the pitch is a good one to bat on but if you bowl well, you can get the wickets. Hopes that his bowlers mix up their pace and lengths and make use of the two-paced nature of the deck.
  • 49.6 On middle, off a length, punched down to long on for a couple. SOUTH AFRICA FINISH ON 291/7!
  • 49.5 TOP EDGE, DROPPED! Klaasen gets across his stumps, looks to paddle and Starc bowls a slow full toss on off. The top edge is taken and the ball has gone straight up in the air. Carey has to go for the catch because fine leg is at the boundary. He keeps his eyes on the ball, runs backward, dives but cannot cling on. Two runs taken.
  • 49.4 A low full toss, on the pads, played through point for a single.
  • Anrich Nortje walks in now.
  • 49.3 OUT! BOWLED! That is a Mitchell Starc special and exactly why the single on the previous ball taken is questionable. A perfect yorker from Starc, on off, Maharaj backs away, looks to swing but misses. The off stump has been knocked out.
  • 49.2 Oh.... missed! How did that miss the bat? How did that miss the stumps? Klaasen lines Starc up, coming from around the wicket and attempts the reverse paddle. Starc goes for the yorker, but dishes out a full toss. Heinrich misses and the ball just about shaves the off stump. Carey fumbles slightly and the batsmen pinch a bye. Questionable decision to run.
  • 49.2 WIDE. Well done. A full toss, down the leg side, Maharaj misses his flick. An alert Klaasen is immediately off once the ball is bowled and by the time Alex Carey can react after diving to his left, the bye is completed. 5 balls still left.
  • 49.1 A full toss outside off, Maharaj leans and drives it through the covers for a couple.
  • 48.6 FOUR! And that is what happens when you misfield. Had Finch not fumbled on the previous ball, Klaasen would not have been on strike for this ball. Full and outside off, Heinrich just squeezes it between point and short third man! 10 from the over but Cummins has enjoyed a good day with the ball. 10-0-45-3 for him. 281/6
  • 48.5 Poor from Aaron Finch. Klaasen punches this towards extra cover for what should have been a single. But Finch getting across to his left, takes it too lightly and fumbles, allowing the second.
  • Keshav Maharaj walks in but Klaasen will be on strike.
  • 48.4 OUT! RUN OUT. Excellent yorker outside off, Phehlukwayo looks to dig it out but the ball takes the inside edge and rolls to the leg side. Andile is ball-searching and hence, is late to react to the single. He starts to run after Cummins gets to the ball and knows that he is gone for all money if the bowler hits. And Cummins, with all the time in the world, does not miss his shy at the bowler's end.
  • 48.3 A slower bouncer, outside off, Phehlukwayo looks to play the upper cut but misses.
  • Andile Phehlukwayo walks in next, with 10 balls left in the innings.
  • 48.2 OUT! Caught behind! Very close to a no ball but Cummins is just about fine. A short ball, around off, Miller gets across, looks to pull but finds no pace to work with. Just 124 kph. He is cramped for room and gloves it to the keeper. Miller starts to walk off but the umpire wants to check for the overstepping. Refers it upstairs and Cummins just about has something behind the line. That ends a magnificent 149-run stand. Could be a match-winning one. Not quite back to form, is Miller, but he at least got some runs today.
  • Caught! But is it a no ball? Nigel Llong has referred it upstairs. Cummins is just about okay...
  • 48.1 FOUR! ADMONISHED! Finally Miller gets one away. He has been swinging at everything but misses. Gets one in his arc, around middle, fuller in length, looks to sing it out of the park and nearly does so. Lofted over the bowler, one bounce and into the long on fence.
  • 47.6 Short and around middle, pulled to deep mid-wicket for one more. 10-0-63-1 for Hazlewood today. Not his usual stuff. 271/4
  • 47.5 Goes again! A short ball, around off, Heinrich gets across and attempts the paddle-pull. Miscues it but has enough to clear Mitchell Starc at short fine leg. The running is good to fetch three runs.
  • 47.4 FOUR! Cheeky from Klaasen. Gets across, receives a full toss on off and paddles it over the keeper to the fine leg fence! Moves to 110 from 108 balls. The stand is worth 141 from 126 balls.
  • 47.3 A full toss, down the leg side, with fine leg up but DM flicks it straight to that man at short fine leg. Hazlewood gets away with only a single.
  • 47.2 Another slower one, shorter in length, David swings hard again, only to miss.
  • 47.1 A slower ball, on a length, Miller swings but misses.
  • Josh Hazlewood to bowl out. 9-0-54-1 so far.
  • 46.6 SIX! WHOOSH! Spoils the over. Cross seam again from Cummins, around middle, Klaasen backs away and swings it miles over long on! 262/4
  • 46.5 Excellent mix up of pace and length, a low full toss, wide outside off, David looks to drive but gets a thick inside edge towards square leg. A single taken. The stand moves to 130 from 121 balls.
  • 46.4 Comes down the track this time and swings hard but misses again.
  • 46.3 A slower ball, Miller looks to pull but misses.
  • 46.2 CENTURY FOR KLAASEN! An emotional exhale for Heinrich Klaasen. Applause around the ground. A quality knock under immense pressure. This means a lot to him. A length ball, around off, Heinrich tucks it through square leg and yells, 'YEAHHHHHH!' after taking the single. Takes a moment for himself, then removes his helmet, looks at the ground and then slowly soaks in the applause. A matured knock.
  • The crowd getting excited... Klaasen on 99... Finch is just taking his time to set his field. Mind games...
  • 46.1 Full and outside off, pushed down to long off for a single.
  • 45.6 Full on middle, flicked to deep mid-wicket for a run. 253/4
  • 45.5 FOUR! SOUTH AFRICA GO PAST 250. 26 balls still left. Full and outside off, Miller leans and drives it to the left of the diving short extra cover fielder. No one in the deep.
  • 45.4 A slower bouncer, around middle, David looks to hook but misses. He immediately looks towards umpire Nigel Llong at square leg and asks, 'Isn't that a wide?' No, is the answer.
  • 45.3 Yorker outside off, squeezed towards third man for a single.
  • 45.2 Huge shout for LBW, turned down. Was height an issue? A length ball outside off, coming in, Miller looks to have it out of the park but misses. He is hit on the pads and the ball rolls towards point. A leg bye taken. Too high. Miller was through his shot well before the ball arrived.
  • 45.1 Full and wide outside off, swinging away, Miller throws his bat at it but misses.
  • 44.6 Full and outside off, powered down to long on for one more. The stand moves to 120 from 110 balls. 246/4
  • 44.5 Outside off, eased through the covers for a run.
  • 44.4 Slower bouncer outside off, Miller is down the track, hence has to adjust playing his pull. Miscues it to deep mid-wicket. Gets a run and that will be his HALF CENTURY. Time for some Killer stuff now.
  • 44.3 Short and outside off, Heinrich leaps and punches it through point for a run.
  • 44.2 Full on middle, powered down to long on for a couple. Klaasen moves to 96 now.
  • 44.1 A length ball, around off, Miller walks down the track, pushes it wide of mid off and initially yells, 'WAIT ON!' That is because he had to decide whether the ball is going to go past Aaron Finch at short extra cover or not. It does and the single is taken.
  • Pat Cummins returns. 7-0-19-2 so far.
  • 43.6 Around off, coming in, worked to deep square leg for one more. 239/4
  • 43.5 Full on middle, flicked to deep mid-wicket for a run.
  • 43.4 The cutter now, around off, pushed back to the bowler.
  • 43.3 Slower ball, outside off, HK looks to push it through the covers but misses.
  • 43.2 SIX! Wasn't quite in control but Klaasen gets the desired result. A short ball, around middle, Heinrich swivels, looks to pull but the ball flies off the top edge over deep backward square leg!
  • 43.1 On middle, worked through mid off for a single.
  • Mitchell Starc is back. 7-0-35-1 so far.

  • 42.1 Excellent from Steven Smith. Short and outside off, Miller punches it through the covers but Smith flings himself to his right and makes a half-stop.
  • 41.6 Around middle, worked to deep mid-wicket for one. Excellent comeback by Zampa after going for a biggie on the second ball of the over. He is done with the ball for the day. 10-0-48-0. 223/4
  • 41.5 Full on middle, driven back to Zampa again.
  • 41.4 David comes down the track again but Zampa fires it in the blockhole. Miller can only hit it back to the bowler.
  • 41.3 Quicker one, around middle, well defended.
  • 41.2 SIX! What a shot. Floated around off, the googly, Miller strolls down the track and lofts it through the line over long on! Miller moves to 40 from 42 balls.
  • 41.1 Floated around middle, flicked straight to short mid-wicket.
  • 40.6 Full and outside leg, worked towards deep mid-wicket for another single. 216/4
  • 40.5 Down the leg side, flicked behind square leg for one.
  • 40.4 Full and around middle, flicked to deep mid-wicket for a run.
  • 40.3 Action replay of the previous delivery. For a single this time.
  • 40.2 Around off, turning in, worked through mid-wicket for a couple.
  • 40.1 MISFIELD. Short and outside off, Miller punches it through the covers. The fielder misfields at short extra cover and concedes a single.
  • Gamble from Finch. D'Arcy Short has been given the ball. 3-0-21-0 so far.
  • POWERPLAY 3 time. 5 fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle now.

  • 36.2 EDGED, SHORT! Full and outside off, swinging away, David looks to drive straight but the ball takes the outside edge. Lands short of a diving Alex Carey, to his left.
  • 36.1 50-RUN STAND IS UP. Crucially for South Africa, in 57 balls. Which means, in spite of Verreyne falling, the tempo has been maintained. Full and down the leg side, hint of reverse, flicked towards deep mid-wicket for a couple.
  • Josh Hazlewood is back on. 7-0-39-1 so far.

  • Drinks Break! It has been a good hour of play for the hosts. They have managed to steady the ship but unfortunately they have lost debutant Kyle Verreynne. Klaasen though is looking good and will look to continue his good work and hope Miller can join in as well. There is no need for the Aussies to panic but they will not want to make it difficult for themselves and would like to bowl out the hosts under 250.
  • 30.6 FOUR! Delightful stroke and once again, the last over goes for a boundary. On a length and on middle, Klaasen stokes it past the diving mid on fielder and it races away. 150/4
  • 30.5 Length and on middle, Klaasen keeps it out.
  • 30.4 That is a beauty! Equally well played though. He gets it to tail back in, it is a yorker. Klaasen does well to take his front leg out of the way and jam it out.

  • 26.5 A short one on the body, Miller ducks under it.
  • The new man in is David Miller.
  • 26.4 OUT! TAKEN! That is a sharp, sharp catch and the ploy to keep a short square leg works. It was Australia's plan to get on Cummins and ask him to bowl short, he does so and it brings the downfall of the debutant. A good innings form him though comes to an end but he will be disappointed he falls two short of a half ton. Also, he had hit that really well. Rocked back and smashes it but flat and straight towards Marsh there who takes a good catch. The stand which was going along nicely has been broken. Australia once again back on top.

  • 24.6 An appeal but nothing! A short one but down the leg side. Verreynne looks to pull but misses. Carey appeals but maybe to distract the umpire from not signaling a wide. It works though as it is a dot. 120/3
  • 24.5 A good dipping slower one, just outside off. KV is foxed by it. In the end, he does well to jam it out.
  • 24.4 Length and around off, it is pushed towards mid off.

  • 20.1 Good running! On a length and around off, Klaasen drops it towards point and takes one. The 50-run stand is up between the two. A much needed one as South Africa were in trouble when the two joined association.
  • 19.6 On the shorter side again, it is cut square on the off side for two. 24 runs in the last 3 overs. 97/3
  • 19.5 Good shot! Very full and outside off, Verreynne strokes it through covers nicely and takes two.
  • 19.4 One more single as this is eased down to long on for one.

The ball though is close to the stumps for Quinton to play that shot. He still goes for it and ends up kissing the ball to the keeper. He grabs a golden duck in his first outing. Superb bowling from Starc. Nobody wants to face such peach at the start of the innings and definitely not on debut. Starc steams in and bowls a very full ball on middle and leg. It is almost on a yorker length. It angles in beautifully to the right-hander. Malan looks to flick but misses. There is a huge appeal from the Aussies but the umpire turns it down. Aaron Finch signals the 'T' after a brief thought. Replay rolls in and Ultra Edge shows that the ball hit the boot before the bat. Ball Tracker then rolls in and it shows three reds. Malan has to walk back and his dream day has turned into nightmare. Perfect start for Australia.
  • Review straightaway on the first ball. It is for an LBW. Janneman Malan is the man in question. Has the ball hit his pad first or has it hit the bat? If it has hit the pad then it will be difficult for Malan to survive. Let's see what the replays have to say.

  • TOSS - It's toss time! South African skipper, Quinton de Kock spins the coin. Australian skipper, Aaron Finch calls it incorrectly. SOUTH AFRICA OPT TO BAT!
  • Hello and welcome to the first ODI between South Africa and Australia. After an entertaining T20I series, it is time for the longest format in white ball cricket. South African skipper, Quinton de Kock will hope to get over the line after losing the T20Is. The hosts will want other players to stand up and deliver along with their skipper. Australia, on the other hand, will look to continue their good form and take the momentum from the shortest format. The Aussies have been clinical and would look to continue that. Can the rebuilding South African side take an early lead in this short series or will the Aussies pile on their misery?

South Africa Vs Australia Live Score (ODI) Ball by Ball Commentary

  • Right then, that's all we have from this exciting match. South Africa were in early pressure but bounced back superbly and ended up with a convincing win. The action now shifts to the Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein for the second ODI on the 4th of March. Do join us at 1300 local (1100 GMT). Cheers!
  • South African skipper, Quinton de Kock, says that he is pleased with the way his boys went about it today. Lauds Klaasen for his knock and praises Ngidi for the way he bowled. Adds that they knew they had hitters down the order and it was just a matter of staying there and being consistent in what they do. Shares that Ngidi has a knack of picking wickets and he is enjoying his leadership role. On his role as an opener/keeper/captain, de Kock replies that he has always felt that his keeping helps him in captaincy and he feels it won't be the same if he goes out in the outfield. Signs off by saying that he is still feeling fresh and good!
  • Australian skipper, Aaron Finch, says that it was a good start by his bowlers but Klaasen and Miller batted superbly. Admits that they lost wickets pretty consistently and that cost them the match. Tells that they got outplayed in all the disciplines and South Africa were the better side. • HEINRICH KLAASEN IS THE MAN OF THE MATCH! Says that it's a great feeling and that's why that celebration came off. States that they just needed to bat deep and bat with low risk. Further says that David Miller allowed him to play his natural game and then he unleashed a little more.
  • Earlier in the day, South Africa opted to bat but found themselves in troubled waters after losing three quick wickets. But Heinrich Klaasen dug in deep and put on a great show with the bat. His partnerships with Kyle Verreynne and David Miller bailed the African team out and they managed to post a very challenging total on the board. In defense, the bowlers turned up to tighten the noose and it was a complete bowling performance by them. A near clinical win to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Stay tuned for the presentation...
  • Steven Smith fought a brave battle for Australia. Till the time he was in the middle, Australia had hope. He constructed a couple of stands and was laying the platform for an onslaught in the death overs. However, the period when Mitchell Marsh and Smith departed in consecutive overs hurt their chances badly. Post that, there was very little fight shown by the Kangaroos and they succumbed to a heavy defeat.
  • A very efficient defense from South Africa! They bowled according to the plan and stuck to the basics. After dismissing the Aussie openers fairly cheaply, there was a partnership that blossomed between Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne but the Protea bowlers didn't lose hope. They held their nerves and concentrated on drying out the boundaries. This can be substantiated by the fact that it took Australia 18 overs to hit their first boundary after Powerplay 1.
  • 45.1 OUT! TIMBER! That is the end of the match! SOUTH AFRICA WIN BY 74 RUNS! It is on a length and around off, Hazlewood is beaten for sheer pace and fails to keep it out. The stumps light up and it's lights out for Australia.

  • 39.6 On the shorter side and outside off, it is pushed through covers for one. 197/6
  • 39.5 One more single as Short slaps it through covers. Singles won't do it for the visitors. They need boundaries.
  • Mitchell Starc walks out to bat.
  • 39.4 OUT! In the air... taken! Shamsi does pick one and it is a big wicket of Carey. The pressure of the run rate creeping up gets the better of Carey. This is tossed up on off, Carey looks to go downtown as he tries to clear long off. Does not time it that well and Miller takes an easy catch in the deep. It now looks an impossible task for Australia. 97 needed in 62.

  • 36.3 On off, Short pushes it back to the bowler.

  • 36.1 Short and on the body, Short pulls it down to fine leg and takes one.
  • Bowling change. Andile Phehlukwayo (5-0-27-0) is back for another spell. Nortje bowled well from this end in his previous spell and Andile would look to maintain the same pressure.
  • 35.6 Another dot to end! Just the single from the over. 113 now needed in 84. This is angled into the pads, Carey works it towards mid-wicket. 179/5
  • 35.5 One more dot! Very full and on middle, it is hit back to the bowler.

  • 34.3 Shorter and around off, Short gets off the mark as he pushes it nicely through covers for two.
  • 34.2 Good length and on off, it is kept out.
  • D'Arcy Short walks out to bat now. The last recognized batter in this side is in the middle now. The onus will be on this pair to see the side home.
  • 34.1 OUT! LBW! Is that the game for South Africa? Well, two set batters back in the hut and with still another 118 runs needed, you have to feel so. Nortje lands this on a length and around middle, it skids through after pitching. Smith looks to flick but misses. It hits the pad, a huge appeal goes up and so does the finger. Smith does have a chat with Carey but then starts walking back. He is very disappointed with himself. This game has changed in the course of two overs here. Ball Tracker shows it to be hitting the leg pole.
  • 33.6 Ohh! Ngidi hits the deck hard on off and middle, Carey looks to tap it on the off side but gets an inside edge onto the pads. 174/4
  • 33.5 Good length ball on off, Carey starts his innings with a solid back foot defense.
  • Alex Carey walks out to bat.
  • 33.4 OUT! Bowled! Ngidi comes and strikes again. It is a gem of a delivery from Lungi and Marsh is completely outdone by it. The budding stand comes to an end. The all-in-all destructor in this Australian batting line-up is out of here. Good length delivery outside off, Marsh looks to drive it on the up but the ball tails back in and goes right between the gate of bat and pad to disturb the off pole. Marsh had a chance to silence his critics but unfortunately he fails to do so. Australia need another 118 in 98 balls.
  • 33.3 Follows the boundary with a single towards cover.

  • Lungi Ngidi is back on! 5-0-20-2, his numbers so far.
  • 32.6 A single to end! So despite going for a boundary, just the 7 from it. Full and on off, it is hit to mid on for one. 123 needed in 17 overs. 169/3
  • 32.5 Very well bowled! A yorker at 148 kph. Smith does well to get his bat down and jam it out.

  • 32.3 Fuller and wide outside off, Marsh carves it through cover-point for one.
  • 32.2 A single now! Shorter and around off, Smith slashes, it goes off the outside edge down to third man.
  • 32.1 FOUR! 'Oh no' is what Smith shouted when he played the shot. Perhaps he thought he had chipped one straight to mid off. Luckily for him, it goes over the fielder. Rare, very rare misjudgement from him! Fuller and off, Smith looks to go over mid off. Does not hit it that well but gets enough to clear mid off. A boundary to begin the over.

  • 30.2 Back of a length and on off, Smith pushes it wide of covers and takes an easy two.
  • 30.1 Slightly shorter and outside off, the ball skids through. Smith is late in the cut shot. Beaten. Good start by Nortje.
  • Anrich Nortje is back on. He has not had a good day with the ball so far. 25 from his 4 overs in his first spell.
  • 29.6 One more single to end the over which also brings up 150 for Australia! On middle, it is pushed back to the left of the bowler who dives but only gets a hand to it. It rolls down to long off for one. 150/3
  • 29.5 A low full toss on middle, Marsh strokes it towards covers for one.
  • 29.4 A huge, huge shout but it is doing too much! This is on middle, it turns back in sharply. Marsh looks to defend but misses to get hit on the pads. • 29.2 Loopy ball on middle, Smith works it through mid-wicket for one.
  • 29.1 On the shorter side, this is cut through point for one.

  • 27.6 FOUR! Welcome boundary for the Aussies. Their first one since the end of Powerplay 1. Flighted on middle and leg, Marsh makes room and drives it with ease through mid off for a boundary. This would calm the nerves for Mitchell Marsh. 142/3

  • Mitchell Marsh is the new man in in.
  • 26.4 OUT! Labuschagne holes out! He has literally thrown his wicket away. A nothing shot from him here. Maharaj is successful in breaking the stand. This is tossed up on middle and off, Labuschagne plants his front foot forward and ends up chipping it straight down the throat of Ngidi who makes no mistake at long on. A good little innings from Labuschagne comes to an end but he needed to stay out there longer. South Africa will now look to build more pressure on the Aussies. They are just ahead in the game at the moment. 159 more needed.
  • 26.3 Flatter and on off, it is pushed through covers for one.
  • 26.2 Just wide! Fifty up for Smith! Once again he has taken the responsibility of pulling the Aussies out of trouble. He needs to continue though. However, he must have had his heart in his mouth on this delivery. It is angled into the pads, Smith looks to flick but gets a leading edge. It goes just wide of the diving Maharaj and down towards long on for one. Two taken.

  • 24.2 Shorter on middle, Smith punches it to long on and gets to the other end.
  • 24.1 Darted on the pads, Labuschagne flicks it to the right of square leg. Phehlukwayo at square leg anticipated it to go towards mid-wicket and hence he went that way initially but he manages to clean it up before the ropes. Three taken by the batters.
  • 23.6 A single to end! Shamsi is really doing a good job here. Just the two from this over. On middle, this is pushed down to long on for one. 117/2
  • 23.5 Stumping chance goes abegging! It is very full and on the pads, Labuschagne looks to whip it but the ball hits the pad and goes behind towards de Kock. • 17.4 On the pads, Labuschagne whips it in front of square and eases down to the other end.
  • 17.3 Nice change of pace from the Protea bowler. Slower ball outside off, Labuschagne looks to drive but misses.

  • 11.2 Short and outside off, cut uppishly but behind point for a single.
  • 11.1 NOT OUT. Close? Yes. Close in hitting the 6th stump down the leg side. Poor de Kock. Blindly trusted his bowler. Did not use his own judgement. A length ball, down the leg side, Smith missed his flick and was hit on the pads. Phehlukwayo appealed but the umpire moved away. The bowler as confident that was hitting the stumps and his captain went with him, without even waiting to think. Ball Tracker shows the impact itself to be outside leg. Review wasted.

  • 8.6 OUT! CAUGHT! The third umpire has gone with the soft signal. Full and outside off, Warner pushes at this uppishly. The ball dips onto Kyle Verreyne at cover-point who dives forward, takes the catch and claims it. But Warner stands his ground. The Proteas are confident and the umpires get to confer. They refer it upstairs with the soft signal as out. The first replay seems to indicate that the ball has gone into the palms, with the fingers underneath the ball. But the more you look at it, the more you feel it has bounced. Eventually, OUT flashes on the giant screen. Both the openers dismissed inside Powerplay 1. 243 more needed from 246 balls. 49/2
  • Is that a legal catch? South Africa are celebrating. But David Warner is going nowhere. The umpires get together now. The soft signal is... OUT.
