  • Now then, the wicket is assisting the pacers and the Kiwis have a strong pace attack. The Lankans on the other hand, would fancy themselves to take a lead as the score is not a big one. Will we see another session dominated by the ball or will the batters come out on top? Stay tuned to find out in some time.
  • The Islanders won the toss and elected to bowl and their bowlers have justified their skipper's decision. Lakmal ran through the top order in the first session. Taylor and Watling seemed to build a partnership but the former was dismissed in an unfortunate manner. De Grandhomme also did not contribute a lot. The Kiwis were in dire straits at 64 for 6 but a 108-run stand between Tim Southee and BJ Watling with the former scoring a half ton and the latter missing out by just has given some respectability to New Zealand's total.
  • So 8 balls is all it took to pick the remaining 2 wickets after the Tea break. End of an excellent bowling performance by the visitors, led by their spearhead Lakmal. He leads them off the field and the Lankans will be the happier side at the moment.
  • 49.6 OUT! That is it. Kumara gets his second in the over and third in the innings. The short ball does the trick. It is a bumper on middle, Ajaz Patel looks to pull but gets a top edge towards fine leg where Suranga Lakmal takes a comfortable catch. NEW ZEALAND ALL OUT FOR 178.
  • 49.5 Back of a length around off, Patel pushes it to the man at cover.
  • 49.4 Shortish and outside off, Patel guides it towards gully.
  • 49.3 Full and on off, the batsman flicks it through square leg for a run. Boult is off the mark.
  • Trent Boult is the last man.
  • 49.2 OUT! Kumara gets his second wicket. Short outside off, Watling looks to cut but gets an outside edge towards gully where Perera takes a comfortable catch. The last recognized batsman departs and New Zealand now are on the verge of getting all out for under 200.
  • 49.1 Good length delivery on off, Watling looks to defend but gets an inside edge onto the pads.
  • Lahiru Kumara to bowl from the other end.
  • 48.6 Bowls a bouncer, Ajaz does well to duck under it. 177/8
  • 48.5 Good length delivery on off, Ajaz cuts it towards point. The batsmen pick up a couple.
  • We are back after Tea. The players and umpires are out in the middle. BJ Watling is at the crease. Ajaz Patel is the new batsman in. Lakmal will continue with his over after Tea.
  • ... DAY 1, SESSION 3 ...
  • Not a lot of batting left now for the Kiwis. They would hope that Watling, along with the remaining two wickets can add some handy runs. Lanka on the other hand, will look to take the remaining wickets as quickly as possible. Will the hosts reach 200? Join us to find out in a while.
  • It was Tim Southee who came to their rescue. He along with BJ Watling counter-attacked, the former especially. The pacer took on the Lankan bowlers and scored at will. He did have luck on his side but also played some excellent cricketing strokes. Watling on the other hand, was happy to play second fiddle. The two added 108 for the 7th wicket and they looked like they would take the game away from the visitors. However, a brilliant catch by Karunaratne to dismiss Southee and Lakmal's 5th sees the Lankans go back on top in the contest.
  • What an entertaining session of cricket we witnessed there. Sri Lanka still ahead in the game but not by much I feel. After heading into the post-Lunch session in deep trouble, they slipped further when they lost Taylor and de Grandhomme in quick succession. At that time, it seemed the Kiwis would struggle to get to 100 but that was not to be.
  • 48.4 OUT! Now Wagner goes. Lakmal gets a five-fer. What a day he has had. Short outside off, Wagner looks to slash hard but gets a thick outside edge towards second slip where Kusal Mendis takes a good catch. Great display of bowling from Suranga Lakmal. THAT IS TEA ON DAY 1.
  • 48.3 Good length delivery outside off, Wagner drives it to mid off.
  • 48.2 Bowls a bouncer, Wagner does well to duck under it.
  • 48.1 Full outside off, Watling drives it through point. The fielder chases it and stops it comfortably. The batsmen get three runs.
  • 47.6 On the pads, it is flicked to square leg. 172/7
  • 47.5 Works it against the turn towards mid-wicket.
  • 47.4 On the stumps, kept out.
  • 47.3 Tosses it up on off, Wagner keeps it out.
  • Neil Wagner is the new batsman in.
  • 47.2 OUT! What a catch! Something special was needed to break this stand and Gunathilaka has provided that. Outstanding by him. Dilruwan tosses this up around off, Southee comes down the track and whips it with the turn towards mid-wicket. He must have thought there are runs on offer as soon as he hit it up but Gunathilaka had different ideas. The Lankan opener, times his leap to perfection, stretches his right hand up and plucks the ball out of thin air. That ends the 108-run stand and also an entertaining, important for the Kiwis and a frustrating innings for the Lankans. Can Sri Lanka now bowl New Zealand out for under 200?

  • 40.6 50 for Southee! Fifth fifty for him in this format. What a counter-attacking knock this has been and what a timely one. Another short ball on the body, Southee continues to try and pull. The ball takes the top edge and flies over the keeper's head and also over the fence. Another huge over, 15 from it. 114/6
  • 33.6 Bowls a good bumper from around the wicket, Southee tries to pull but misses. The umpire signals a no ball as it Kumara's third bumper in the over.

Another short ball on middle, Southee goes for the pull, the ball takes the top edge but flies over the square leg fence. • 27.1 OUT! Colin de Grandhomme goes. Lahiru Kumara gets his first wicket. This is a short of a length delivery outside off, de Grandhomme looks to drag his pull but gets a top edge. It goes high up in the air towards mid on. Dushmantha Chameera there settles under it and takes a good catch. Never easy when it goes so high up in the air.

  • 25.4 FOUR! A gift for Watling! Short and wide outside off, Kumara cuts it through point and the ball races away.
  • 25.3 OUT! And that is why Taylor started to walk off, he knew he was short. A very, very unfortunate way to be dismissed. This is probably the last thing the Kiwis would have wanted and probably the first thing that Sri Lanka would have wanted after Lunch. New Zealand now have half the side back in the hut. Kumara bowls it full and around middle, Watling drives it back towards the bowler who gets a hand to it. The ball deflects onto the stumps at the non-striker's end. An appeal follows and a confident one. The umpire takes it upstairs but Taylor has already started to walk. Replays confirm that Rosco was backing up a long way and does not manage to make it back.
  • Colin de Grandhomme is the new batsman in.

  • 24.1 FOUR! Good start for New Zealand after Lunch. Length delivery on leg, Taylor flicks it towards the fine leg for a boundary.
  • Welcome back after Lunch. The players and umpires are out in the middle. Ross Taylor and BJ Watling are at the crease. Suranga Lakmal will start the proceedings after Lunch.
  • ... DAY 1, SESSION 2 ...
  • Sri Lanka would love more of the same after the break. However, they would like the other bowlers to give more support to Lakmal. New Zealand on the other hand, will hope Taylor and Watling can build some sort of a stand and take the hosts to safer shores. Will we see the Lankans dominate or will New Zealand fight back? Join us in a while to find out.
  • The Kiwis though started off nicely, they were put into bat and did well to play the first 45 minutes or so out quite comfortably. Post that, it was the Lakmal show. The pacer, then removed the openers in quick succession. The Lankan skipper then decided to give him an extended spell and Lakmal did not disappoint. He picked up another two and has justified his skipper's decision to bowl first.
  • Sri Lanka's session, Lakmal's session I should say. He has continuously bowled from one end right from the start. His spell accounted for 12 overs on the trot. He has ran through the top order of the Kiwis and has picked all the 4 wickets which have fallen.
  • 23.6 Good length delivery on off, the right-hander keeps it out. THAT IS LUNCH ON DAY 1. 51/4

  • 19.2 Full again on leg, Taylor flicks it past short leg for a single.
  • 19.1 FOUR! Poor bowling from Kumara. Full toss on leg, Taylor flicks it through mid-wicket for a boundary.
  • Lahiru Kumara is back.
  • 18.6 A peach to welcome Watling! Good length and around off, it pitches and straightens. Beats the outside edge of Watling who tries to defend. 36/4
  • BJ Watling is the new batsman in.
  • 18.5 OUT! Another one bites the dust! Who picks it? Any guesses? Wait, let me make it easy for you. It is the guy who is bowling his 10th over on the trot and has taken three already. Yes, it is once again that man Suranga Lakmal who has gone right through Nicholls. His fourth and it is another excellent delivery. From around the wicket it is bowled around off, it comes in. Nicholls plays a very loose shot. He tries to drive but leaves a huge gap between bat and pad. It goes through the gap and hits the stumps. Sri Lanka all over the Kiwis at the moment. Still some time to go for Lunch, can they get a couple more?

  • 16.3 BEATEN! Beauty of a delivery. Good length delivery angling into the batsman, Taylor has to play at it but the ball pitches and then moves away. It whizzes past the outside edge of Taylor's bat. Not a lot you can do about such deliveries but just hope it does not take the edge.

  • 14.4 Angles it away from off, Nicholls leaves it.

  • Henry Nicholls is the new man in.
  • 14.2 OUT! Lakmal gets the big fish, Kane Williamson! Huge, huge breakthrough. The decision to give him an extended spell has worked wonders. Top nut this one! It is in the corridor of uncertainty, straightens a touch after pitching. Williamson has a tentative poke at it and the ball kisses the outside edge and goes into the mitts of the keeper. The umpire checks for the front foot and it is fine. The Lankans are on cloud nine at the moment. New Zealand slip further.

  • Drinks! It has been a good hour for Sri Lanka. They have dismissed both the openers quickly. However they would want to continue the same. New Zealand on the other hand, would want Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor to take them to safer shores.

  • Ross Taylor walks out to bat.
  • 10.1 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Lakmal has now dismissed both the openers cheaply. This time it is the double centurion from the first game. Another excellent delivery, full, probably the length which Sri Lanka haven't bowled on a consistent basis today morning. It also shapes back in from outside off. Latham tries to drive it through mid on but gets an outside edge. The ball goes low towards second slip where Mendis takes a very good catch. Latham starts walking back but the umpires ask him to wait as they want to check if it has carried. Replays show that it has easily. Two wickets in two overs for Lakmal, he is on fire at the moment. New Zealand in a spot of bother here.

  • 9.1 Good length delivery outside off, Latham offers no shot.
  • 8.6 A good nut to end! Once again it is the late moment which troubles Williamson. However, Williamson played it well this time. On a length and around off, it pitches and then shapes away. • 8.5 This time it is a little too wide outside off, KW lets it be.

  • Kane Williamson is the new man in.
  • 8.3 OUT! Lakmal draws first blood! A soft, soft dismissal this. Suranga bowls it on the pads, it was there to be flicked away for a boundary. Raval tries to do that, he however, closes the face of the bat too early. It takes the leading edge and lobs towards mid off. Chandimal there takes an easy catch. The Lankans are ecstatic as they have an early wicket. Just what they would have wanted after electing to bowl.

Both the sides will be eager to do so.

New Zealand Vs Sri Lanka Live Score (TEST) Ball by Ball Commentary

  • New Zealand have now got a good lead and they would now look to put in a better show with the bat. Sri Lanka on the other hand, need to take wickets and that too quickly if they are to get back in the game. Will we see the host continue their domination or will the visitors fight back.
  • Not a lot you can write about the Lankan batting. They could not cope against the swing and have been bowled out very cheaply in their first innings. Only three batsmen managed to score in double digits but none could make it big. Angelo Mathews fought hard but ran out of partners in the end.
  • An excellent bowling performance from the Kiwi pacers here! They did not post a big first innings score but their bowlers have led right from the front. It was Southee at the start who ran through the top order. De Grandhomme dismissed the hero of the last game and Boult this morning took the remaining 6 in the 5 overs bowled by him.
  • Well that escalated quickly! The Lankans have lost their last 6 wickets for just 16 runs which means, New Zealand have gained a decent lead of 74 runs and it is courtesy Tent Boult. He leads the team off the field and to a standing ovation. He deserves every bit of it. He has been exceptional today morning. He has taken all the six wickets to fall this morning and in very, very quick time.
  • 40.6 OUT! Three reds and that is the end of the Lankan innings! Boult finishes with a 6-fer. Not sure what Kumara was doing there. Boult bowls it full around the leg stump. Now I am not sure if Kumara was trying to move out of the way or he lost sight of the ball but he offered no shot. The ball hits him low on the pads. An appeal follows and the umpire raises his finger. Kumara being the last man takes the review but that is never going to save him as it is absolutely plumb. THE LANKANS HAVE BEEN BOWLED OUT FOR 104!
  • Review time! However, that is absolutely plumb. It is a review in hope this. Kumara is the man in question.
  • 40.5 Another play and a miss! Full and outside off, it shapes away. Kumara goes for the drive but misses the ball by a mile.
  • 40.4 On a length around off, the batsman gets right behind the line and defends it onto the ground.
  • 40.3 BEATEN! Full and around off, it shapes away. Kumara hangs his bat out and gets beaten.
  • Lahiru Kumara is the new batsman in.
  • 40.2 OUT! Fifer for Boult! He does not get a hat-trick but gets Chameera on the next ball. It is bowled on a similar length and line like the hat-trick ball but it comes back in late. Chameera tries to defend but misses. It hits him on the front pad. An appeal and the umpire too agrees. New Zealand one wicket away now from taking a big lead. Boult has 4 balls to bowl to the last batsman.
  • 40.1 No hat-trick as Chameera has defended it solidly. Good length around off, it is defended.
  • 39.6 FOUR! Short of a length delivery, Mathews pulls it over square leg for a boundary. Good short stuff from Southee. 104/8
  • 39.5 Short of a length delivery, Mathews looks to hook but misses it.
  • 39.4 Good length delivery on off, the batsman defends off the back foot.
  • 39.3 Good length delivery on middle, Mathews tucks it to the leg side.
  • 39.2 Good length delivery on off, Mathews looks to defend but gets hit on the hand. That could be a nasty blow.
  • 39.1 Good length delivery on middle, Mathews defends off the back foot.
  • Dushmantha Chameera is the new batsman in.
  • 38.6 OUT! PLUMB IN FRONT! Two in two for Boult! His fourth today. Sri Lanka have slipped from 94 for 4 to 100 for 8. A corker of a yorker this from Boult. It also tails back in very late. Lakmal plays all around it, it hits him on the boot. An appeal follows and the umpire raises his finger. Lakmal bags a golden duck. Boult will be on a hat-trick in the next over. End of a triple-wicket over by Boult. 100/8
  • Suranga Lakmal is the new batsman in.
  • 38.5 OUT! Three reds and Dilruwan has to continue his long walk back! One brings two and two brings three. Boult is on fire here. He has taken all the wickets to fall today morning. Another top nut. Boult lands it on a length around off, Dilruwan shapes up to leave it thinking it will slant away. The ball though jags back in sharply after pitching. Hits Perera on the pads. The player appeals and the umpire raises his finger. Dilruwan walks upto his partner and after a chat signals the 'T'. Replays show that the on-field call is the right one. Lanka lose a review and the Kiwis are now into the tail. A big lead is there for the taking for them now.
  • Dilruwan is a goner! He has been adjudged LBW but he has opted to review. Looks out.
  • 38.4 Wide outside off, the batsman shoulders arms to it.
  • 38.3 Good length on off, Perera keeps it out.
  • 38.2 Good length on off, Perera pushes it to covers.
  • Dilruwan Perera is the new batsman in.
  • 38.1 OUT! EDGED AND WHAT A CATCH! Once again it is the Boult-Southee combination. But a lot of credit has to be given to the latter. He has taken an absolute blinder. Trent bowls it full around off, it shapes away late. Dickwella goes after it with not much foot movement. The ball takes an outside edge and flies between second slip and third slip. Southee in the latter position dives and sticks his right hand out and the ball sticks. The Kiwis are ecstatic and they are right on top here. Sri Lanka trail by another 78 and have only 4 wickets in hand.
  • 37.6 On a length around off, Mathews strokes it back to the bowler. 100/5
  • 37.5 Punched off the back foot by the batsman.

  • 37.3 Slightly outside off, Mathews with not a lot of foot movement, keeps it out.
  • 37.2 Good length again around off, Mathews defends it towards mid on.
  • 37.1 Hits the length around off, Mathews defends it onto the ground.
  • 36.6 Well left! Around off and it swings away. Dickwella covers his off pole and leaves it alone. End of a successful over by Boult. 98/5
  • 36.5 FOUR! Off the mark in style. Full and on the pads, Dickwella flicks it uppishly but over the man at mid-wicket for a boundary.
  • Niroshan Dickwella is the new batsman in.
  • 36.4 OUT! Boult strikes! A well-deserved wicket this. He has been brilliant this morning and has got the reward. However, there is nothing great about this delivery, it is full and outside off, Silva maybe could have left it. But he has been drawn into the stroke. He plays a half-hearted drive. The ball takes the outside edge and goes to Tim Southee at third slip. An early wicket for New Zealand and Sri Lanka now have half the side back in the hut.
  • 36.3 A huge shout from the bowler but nothing from the keeper and the slip cordon. Back of a length around off, it takes off after pitching. Silva tries to defend but the ball whizzes past the outside edge.
  • 36.2 Well bowled and well played! Full and on off, it tails back in late. Silva adjusts and flicks it through mid-wicket and the batsmen run two.
  • 36.1 On off and it angles away. Silva plays inside the line and lets it be.
  • 35.6 Almost drags it on! Full and on off, Mathews goes for the drive away from his body but gets an inside edge onto his pads. A better over this from Southee. 92/4
  • 35.5 OUCH! Goes wide of the crease and angles it into the batsman. Mathews tries to defend but misses to get hit near the box.
  • 35.4 Wide outside off, left alone.
  • 35.3 The surprise bouncer! Mathews though takes on the challenge of pulling but is beaten by the extra bounce.
  • 35.2 Perfect! Length delivery and on off, it shapes away after pitching. Mathews tries to defend but it takes an outside edge and goes along the ground to gully.
  • 35.1 Southee needs to be a little more straight here. For now, he is way too wide outside off. Mathews will keep leaving such deliveries and he does exactly that on this one.
  • 34.6 Silva pushes it towards covers, he wants a run but is rightly sent back. 92/4
  • 34.5 On a length and it is kept out.
  • 34.4 The bouncer this time, good change in length. Boult ducks under it.
  • 34.3 Fullish and on off, it comes back in. Silva strokes it to mid off.
  • 34.2 BEATEN! Good length delivery angling on off, the ball skidded through and whizzed past the outside edge of Roshen Silva. Good bowling by Boult.
  • 34.1 Full on off, Silva manages to defend it.
  • 33.6 Outside off again and it is left alone. A maiden but not a threatening one. 92/4
  • 33.5 Now the length was good but the line is outside off again. Mathews makes a leave.
  • 33.4 Perfect line on off but the length is a little too full. Mathews strokes it to mid off.
  • 33.3 Better this from Southee! Closer to the off pole but not close enough to make the batsman play.
  • 33.2 Wayward start by Southee! He is getting some swing but the line is not right. It is once again way outside off, Mathews does not fiddle with it.
  • 33.1 Swing straightaway for Southee but the line is a little too wide outside off. It swings away further. Mathews need not play at it.
  • Tim Southee to bowl from the other end.
  • 32.6 FOUR! First runs of today! It comes off the edge. On a length and around off, it angles away. Silva plays inside the line, the ball takes the outside edge and races to the third man fence. A boundary to end the first over of the day but it was a testing one. 92/4
  • 32.5 Hits the length hard on off, Silva defends it.
  • 32.4 A little too wide outside off, Boult was trying to get the ball to curl back in. It does not and Silva lets it be.
  • 32.3 Fuller again but no swing this time around off, Silva strokes it to covers.
  • 32.2 Goes fuller this time and straightaway it causes problems! It tails back in a little from outside off, Silva tries to defend but gets an inside edge onto his pads.
  • 32.1 Slightly short on off to begin with, hence not giving the ball a lot of time to swing. Goes straight on. Silva gets right behind the line and keeps it out.
  • We are all set for the action to begin with. Angelo Mathews and Roshen Silva are at the crease. Trent Boult will start the proceedings for Day 2.
  • Hello and welcome to Day 2 of the second Test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka in Christchurch. Day 1 saw both the teams on level terms. However, a couple of quick wickets, will see the Kiwis have the upper hand and that is exactly what Kane Williamson will be looking for. For Sri Lanka, one good partnership will see them gain the advantage. The first session is an important one, let us see how it pans out. Stay tuned.
  • ... DAY 2, SESSION 1 ...
  • What can we expect on Day 2? The Kiwis will look to run through the middle and the lower order and gain some sort of a lead. The visitors, on the other hand, will hope the two batting out there can build a decent partnership and the ones to follow can also contribute after that. A lead for any side will be important and both the teams will know that. Who will get it? Join us to find out on Day 2 at 1100 local (2200 GMT, previous night). Till then, take care and goodbye!
  • Earlier in the day, the Lankans won the toss and put the Kiwis in to bat. The decision turned out to be the right one as they had New Zealand on the mat at 64 for 6 but could not capitalize. However, an attacking Southee and a resurgent Watling added a 108-run stand and brought the Kiwis back into the contest. Lakmal's fifer though kept the Lankans on the front foot. But impressive bowling from the hosts' bowlers has seen Day 1 end even-stevens.
  • A day dominated by the bowlers is what we have witnessed today. A total of 14 wickets have fallen and the game is evenly poised at the end of Day 1. The last session saw the Lankans take the remaining two Kiwi wickets quickly. In reply, they lost their top three in quick succession. Mendis and Mathews then did try to steady the ship but a lapse in concentration saw the departure of the former. Mathews though is still battling out there and he along with Roshen Silva are amidst a 37-run stand and they have brought the lead down to 10 short of 100.
  • 31.6 NOT OUT! So, so close! Mathews survives on the final ball of the day! Good length delivery on middle, Mathews looked to defend but got hit on the pads. The bowler appealed but the umpire shook his head. After a bit of a discussion, New Zealand go for the review. Replays show that it was umpire's call in terms of height. Could have been given too! Nervy moment. THAT IS STUMPS ON DAY 1, SRI LANKA TRAIL BY 90! 88/4
  • A review on the last ball of the day! A huge appeal for LBW has been turned down. Mathews is the man in question. The Kiwis have gone for the review. Looks close. Height can be an issue.

  • 27.5 Goes a little more straighter this time in search of the edge. Does not get the same movement as the last two balls, Roshen blocks it.
  • 27.4 Almost an action replay of the last delivery. Length and tailing away from off, Roshen once again puts in a small stride and tries to defend but gets beaten.

  • 17.2 Good length delivery outside off, Roshen Silva lets it go.
  • 17.1 OUT! De Grandhomme gets the hero of the last game. Mendis walks back cheaply and with him, he probably takes the Lankan hopes of gaining a lead. The visitors are 4 down and still trail by another 127 runs. Nothing great about the delivery, it was a gentle one, pitched fuller outside off. Mendis senses a scoring opportunity and goes for a drive. He ends up playing outside the line. The ball goes off the inner half towards the keeper. Watling was moving the wrong way at first but adjusts and takes a good low catch.

  • 10.5 Back of a length around off, Mathews defends it. He probably finds the back of a length easier as he is already on the back foot.
  • 10.4 Well bowled! Just ahead of a length around off, Mathews makes the mistake of playing behind to a ball he should have played forward to. Gets beaten as the ball pitches and moves away.
  • 10.3 The batsman works it down the leg side. They pick up a single.

  • 9.5 Good length delivery outside off, Mendis lets it go.
  • Angelo Mathews is the new man in.
  • 9.4 OUT! IN THE AIR, TAKEN! Southee gets his third. Both openers have gone. That is a bad, bad shot from Gunathilaka. To take on the short delivery is fine but not without seeing it totally. Short of a length delivery, around off, Danushka looks to pull but gets a top edge as he is done in by the pace and bounce. The ball just about clears square leg but Jeet Raval does exceedingly well. He is neither at square leg nor in the deep. Somewhere in between. He first comes forward but then realizes that he has to go back. Backtracks a couple of steps quickly and takes it nicely. Sri Lanka slip further and still trail by 157 runs.
  • 9.3 Good length delivery on off, Gunathilaka defends off the back foot.
  • 9.2 Full on off, Gunathilaka drives it to covers.
  • 9.1 The batsman chooses to leave the ball outside his off stump.
  • 8.6 This time he is sure about defending it and does so solidly. 21/2
  • 8.5 Almost! The confusion of either playing at it or not playing it almost brought about the downfall of Mendis. Boult pitches it around off, Mendis comes forward to defend but then seeing the ball angling away, he tries to leave it. It is too late by then, it hits the under edge of the bat and almost deflects onto the stumps. Just goes past the off stick.
  • 8.4 Good leave! Outside off, Kusal does the right thing, shows good patience and makes a leave.
  • 8.3 Attacks the stumps, Mendis defends it onto the ground. Kusal is coming on the back off a ton here, he needs to score big again.
  • 8.2 Outside off, it is left alone.
  • 8.1 Works it with the angle through mid-wicket for a run.
  • 7.6 A good nut to end after two wayward deliveries! Length and on off, it is kept out. 20/2
  • 7.5 Once again it is down the leg side, Mendis fails to put it away.
  • 7.4 Down the leg side, Mendis tries to flick but misses.
  • 7.3 Good delivery to the new batsman. Makes him play by bowling it on off, Mendis defends it.
  • Kusal Mendis is the new batsman in.
  • 7.2 OUT! No. 2 goes down and it is the Lankan skipper who is walking back. A body blow for them and once again it is Southee who is amongst the wickets. Perfect line and perfect length by him, to add to that, he also gets the ball to move just enough for it to take the outside edge. He lands it on a length around off, it pitches and shapes away a little. Chandimal plays inside the line, the ball takes a faint outside edge and goes into the hands of Watling. An appeal goes up and the umpire raises his finger. Sri Lanka in trouble here, they have lost two early wickets and trail by another 158 runs.
  • 7.1 Slightly straight this time, it pitches and straightens. Chandimal tries to work it around the corner but gets a soft leading edge to covers. Not a good idea to play with a closed face of the bat when the ball is moving.
  • 6.6 Fullish and on off, Chandimal strokes it towards mid off, he waits for the ball to pass the fielder and a run is taken. 20/1
  • 6.5 A little too wide outside off, the batsman lets it be.
  • 6.4 On the stumps, Chandimal is solid in defense.
  • 6.3 Well bowled and well played! Shorter in length by Boult on off, Chandimal is on his toes while defending it and also takes a hand off while doing so. The ball dies onto the ground.
  • 6.2 FOUR! Classic Chandimal! Full and wide, a half volley outside off. Chandimal leans into it and strokes it through covers. No need to run for those.
  • 6.1 Too wide outside off, left alone.
  • 5.6 Full and around off, Gunathilaka this time gets bat to it, it goes through covers for a couple. 15/1
  • 5.5 Loose, very loose from Gunathilaka. Southee bowls the sucker ball, full and wide outside off. DG goes after it away from his body but luckily for him, the ball does not take his edge.
  • 5.4 EDGY RUNS! This one came back in very late. Full and on off, Gunathilaka tries to drive it straight down the ground. It comes in late, goes off the inner half and through square leg for a brace.
  • 5.3 A gift to get off the mark! Down the leg side, Chandimal works it to fine leg for a run.
  • Dinesh Chandimal is the new batsman in.
  • 5.2 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Southee strikes. There goes no. 1. This time the edge is found and it goes straight into the hands. The fuller length does the trick. It is just behind the driving length and once again it angles away after pitching. Karunaratne tries to drive with his foot rooted to the crease, it takes the outside edge and goes straight into the hands of the gully fielder. Williamson there takes it. Early wicket, exactly what the Kiwis needed.
  • 5.1 BEATEN! Excellent use of the angle by Southee. On a length and around off, it pitches and slants away. Karunaratne tries to defend but the ball whizzes past the outside edge.
  • 4.6 On off again, excellent length and line by Boult. All Gunathilaka can do is play a defensive stroke. End of a testing over by Boult. 10/0
  • 4.5 On the stumps this time, not a lot of movement. DG is solid in defense.
  • 4.4 This one angles into the batsman, Gunathilaka works it towards mid-wicket. Good variation there but Gunathilaka was up for it.
  • 4.3 BEATEN AGAIN! This is frustrating for the Kiwis, Boult has been bowling beautifully but he just does not have luck on his side at the moment. Goes fuller this time, giving the ball more time to swing. It does, away from the batsman. Gunathilaka with not much feet movement goes for the drive but gets beaten as he does not account for the movement.
  • 4.2 A little too straight this time, Gunathilaka hence, gets behind the line and blocks it out.
  • 4.1 That is a peach! Lovely, lovely bowling this by Boult. Unplayable. The delivery starts from the off pole which means the batsman has to play at it. Gunathilaka plays the original trajectory but the ball moves away late and goes past the outside edge.
  • 3.6 Length delivery on off, the batsmen cuts it towards point for a single. 10/0
  • 3.5 Good length delivery on middle, Gunathilaka defends off the back foot.

  • 1.2 Good length delivery on off, Karunaratne defends off the back foot.
  • 1.1 Length delivery on leg, Karunaratne flicks it towards fine leg. The batsmen pick up a couple.
  • Tim Southee to bowl from the other end.
  • 0.6 Length delivery on middle, Gunathilaka pushes it to mid-wicket. Good over to start with. A maiden to begin with. 0/0

New Zealand Vs Sri Lanka Live Score (TEST) Ball by Ball Commentary

  • Now then, there are around 14 overs to go today. Can Sri Lanka enter Day 4 unscathed? Will New Zealand pick a few wickets? We will find out in a while.
  • The Lankan bowlers did not look threatening at all. They did not receive any assistance from the wicket and they could not create any magic themselves. Lahiru Kumara bowled his heart out and he finished with a two-fer. The rest were quite inconsistent.
  • New Zealand entered their second innings with a lead of 74 and their openers then gave them the ideal stand with a 100-plus run stand. After Raval's dismissal, Latham continued and stitched two more handy stands with Williamson and Taylor. The opener went onto get his ton and with Nicholls built a massive partnership of 214. Henry too scored a century. Latham missed out on a double ton as he was dismissed just before Tea. Colin de Grandhomme post the break, smashed the bowlers to all parts of the ground, scored the fastest fifty by a Kiwi batsman in Tests, added a quickfire 124 run stand before Williamson declared.
  • New Zealand have finally DECLARED and they have set Sri Lanka a massive target of 660. A brilliant batting performance from the kiwis here. Yes, the wicket did ease out but take nothing away from the effort. All the batsmen contributed with two of them scoring daddy hundreds.

  • What will New Zealand be targeting? 550? 600? Not sure but they will be coming out all guns blazing after the break. Probably bat another 45 minutes or say an hour. Stay tuned as the last session can be an exciting one.
  • So the Kiwis continue to swell their lead which is now close to the 550 run mark. They did lose Latham just before Tea but don't think we will be seeing a declaration immediately. Once again it was all New Zealand in this session. Both Nicholls and Latham came out with an attacking approach. The two added a brilliant 214-run stand with the former getting to his ton and the latter eyeing another double hundred. That was not to be though as right at the stroke of Tea, Chameera got the opener, caught down the leg side.
  • 138.3 OUT! No 200 for Latham. A soft, soft end to a magnificent innings, a soft, soft end to a brilliant partnership. Chameera bowls it down the leg side, Latham tries to flick but ends up hitting it too fine. Dickwella behind takes it and appeals. Latham at first starts walking but then stops. The umpire though spots that and raises his finger. He then starts walking back again, disappointed but to a standing ovation from the crowd and the Kiwi players. THAT WILL ALSO BE TEA ON DAY 3!

  • Hello and welcome to Day 3 of the second Test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka at Christchurch. The lead is already 305 runs for the hosts and the question is, how many more will they like to add? Tom Latham is already set and he would like to score big for his side nonce again. On the other hand, the visitors, have a lot to ponder about. They need to pick wickets in clusters to make a comeback in this match. Lakmal has been very short with his lengths and he needs to come good. A lot will rely on him as he was the hero for Sri Lanka in the previous innings. The first session will be very crucial for both the sides. What is in store for us? Stay tuned to find out.
  • ... DAY 3, SESSION 1 ...
  • The lead is already a huge one and with a lot of time left, the Kiwis won't be in any hurry to declare. They will bat for as long as possible and probably bat the Lankans out of the game. For Sri Lanka, they need wickets and quite a few of them quickly if they are to have some sort of a chance. Will we see the hosts continue the domination on Day 3 or will the visitors show some character and fightback? Join us to find out at 1100 local (2200 GMT, previous night). Till then, take care and goodbye!

New Zealand Vs Sri Lanka Live Score (TEST) Ball by Ball Commentary

  • So that is it from this game, that is it from the Test series as well. It all ended as one expected it to, the Kiwis take the series 1-0. Now though the two sides need to turn their attention to the 50-over format which begins on the 3rd of January with the first ODI being played in Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui at 1400 local (0100 GMT). Till then, take care and goodbye!
  • Kane Williamson, the winning New Zealand captain says he did not know about the record and was reminded by a presenter regarding the same but says it is a fantastic achievement to win 4 series in a row. Adds it wasn't easy with the Sri Lankans showing a lot of fight but is really proud of how his boys gave their 100 percent and got over the line in the end. Applauds the batsmen for not just giving it away after scoring an 80 or a 100 and going on to make it really count. Reckons that at one point of time last morning, there was even some sense of 'deja vu' from the first Test as they failed to pick a wicket in the first session on Day 4. He feels that the bowlers really gave it their all on the penultimate day too, and the Angelo Mathews injury came to their help somewhat. Feels that playing at home is always really nice because they know the conditions well and even though the surfaces in these two Tests played a little different to what they expected, he says that these are the rigors of international cricket. Signs off by saying that he is tremendously proud of the 4 series wins in a row, an incredible achievement.
  • Dinesh Chandimal, captain of Sri Lanka feels disappointed on losing the match and series. Feels let down by their batting in the first innings. Says he is happy about their batting in the second innings though. Also adds that they are a young side and learning with every outing and getting better. Applauds his seamers for doing a really good job and says they need to focus on getting the work done as a whole team. Says that it will be a challenge with the upcoming tours and want to show good fight everywhere especially like the second innings in both games. Singles out Angelo Mathews for some praise to come out after injury and fight it out. Signs off by saying that the juniors in the team must look upto Mathews and learn from him.
  • The player of the match goes to Tim Southee for his all round contribution. He feels it is always great to win a Test match and even better when you contribute to the win. Says it was nice to get some runs and hang in there with Watling to help New Zealand to a decent score in their first dig. Adds that his body is holding up nicely and he feels amazing after a good summer of cricket. Feels there was good swing this morning with the overhead conditions and it helped them finish the game off early. Ends by saying he doesn't mind sharing the cherry with the others as long as the team is doing well.
  • The Kiwis then had a little more than 2 days to bowl the Lankans out whereas, the visitors had the same to chase 660. The former equation was the more likelier one and that is exactly what happened. Yes, Angelo Mathews' injury was a big blow but I do not think it would have made a difference to the outcome. Their skipper and Mendis did show some character with a 100-run stand but it was always going to be an uphill task, especially with Boult and Wagner on song. The two finished with 7 in total with Wagner taking 4 and Boult taking 3 to give the Kiwis a huge win. Stay tuned for the presentation.
  • From there on, the home side bossed the game. They then never gave the Lankans a sniff. Daddy tons from Latham and Nicholls and handy contributions from the rest saw them set Sri Lanka a massive target.
  • Then in reply, staring down a low first innings score, the visitors did lose early wickets but recovered well to end Day 1 on 88 for 4. However, Day 2 was where everything changed. The Lankans lost their last 6 wickets for just 16 runs. Trent Boult was the tormentor-in-chief as he picked all 6 and it took just around 3 overs for him to do so ensuring the hosts take a decent lead, 74 to be precise.
  • The scorecard suggests it is a comprehensive win for New Zealand but the Lankans had their chances. Especially in the first innings after they elected to bowl, they had the Kiwis reeling at 64-6 but failed to capitalize as the New Zealand lower order added 114 runs, courtesy a brilliant 108-run stand between Southee and Watling with the former scoring a half ton.
  • 14 balls is all it took the Black Caps this morning. 2 for Boult and 1 for Wagner today as the Lankan tail was blown away by pace, swing and bounce. This was never in doubt though today morning but it would escalate so quickly, we did not expect that. Also, with the win, New Zealand take the series and win their fourth consecutive Test series.
  • 106.2 OUT! Three reds and Chameera has to take the long walk back! Also the batsmen are seen shaking hands with the Kiwi players which means Angelo Mathews will not be coming out to bat. That is the end of the Test match and it is NEW ZEALAND WHO WIN IT BY 423 RUNS! Coming to the ball now, it is once again the in-dipper. It pitches around middle and leg and comes back in. Chameera looks to drive but misses to get hit on the pads. An appeal follows and the umpire raises the finger. Chameera, being the last man has to go for the review. He does so but replays show that the on-field call is the right one. THE KIWIS WIN THE SERIES 1-0.
  • Have the Kiwis got another? The umpire has given Chameera out LBW but he has reviewed it. Only an inside edge can save him here.
  • 106.1 Length delivery on off, Chameera drives it through mid off. Williamson chases it and stops it comfortably. The batsmen pick up a couple.
  • 105.6 Left alone outside the off stump. The ball was on a full length and hits some sort of a crack and deviates away suddenly. Watling collects it well. 234/8
  • 105.5 Almost! On the pads this one, Chameera flicks it in the air towards fine leg. There was a leg slip present but the ball goes just wide of the fielder there.
  • 105.4 What happened here? The ball was on a short length and Chameera tried to duck and let it go but the ball didn't rise at all. The ball goes off the handle of Dushmantha's bat. Could've been painful if the ball had hit him on the glove.
  • 105.3 Bouncer on middle, Chameera ducks under the ball and lets it go.
  • Lahiru Kumara is the new batsman in.
  • 105.2 OUT! Two in quick succession. Perera has been bounced out here by Wagner. New Zealand 1 away now? Effort ball on middle, Perera doesn't duck out of the way and tries to pull this one. He is not in control and the ball just goes in the air as far as Kane Williamson at square leg, who runs back and takes an easy catch. New Zealand all but home here. Perera falls after a good hand.
  • 105.1 Outside off, short of a length delivery, Perera defends off the back foot.
  • 104.6 Well outside off, left alone by the batsman at the last moment. 233/7
  • 104.5 Slightly fuller just outside off, holds its line this time. Dushmantha defends well.
  • 104.4 Length ball just outside off, Chameera defends this one with hard hands. The ball goes off the inside half of the bat on to the leg side.
  • Dushmantha Chameera is in at number 9, replacing Lakmal.
  • 104.3 OUT! TIMBER! Beauty of a delivery. Good length delivery coming into the batsman, Boult swings into Lakmal who looks to keep it out but there was a big gap between bat and pad. It went through that and he got bowled. New Zealand are three away from victory if Mathews comes out to bat.
  • 104.2 Full toss on middle, Lakmal looks to flick it but it went of the inner half of the bat. It goes through mid-wicket. The batsmen pick up a couple.
  • 104.1 Starts with a bumper, Lakmal does well to duck under it.
  • We are set to get underway. The players and umpires are out in the middle. Dilruwan Perera and Suranga Lakmal are at the crease. Lakmal to take strike. Trent Boult will start the proceedings for Day 5.
  • Hello and welcome to Day 5 of the decider Test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka at Christchurch. 90 overs, 4 wickets is the equation for the hosts, that too considering Mathews comes out to bat. The speculation though is that he might not come out to the middle. However, the visitors have shown character and determination to survive like the first Test where the rain came to their rescue. This time though it seems to be a little difficult with rain not forecast. Will the Black Caps clean up the tail or is there a miracle on the cards? What is in store for us? Stay tuned.
  • ... DAY 5, SESSION 1 ...
  • Now then, how long will it take for New Zealand to wrap this up on Day 5? Will Angelo Mathews come out to bat? Is there another fightback left? All these questions will be answered on the final day of the second Test at 1100 local (2200 GMT, previous night). Till then, take care and goodbye!
  • The Kiwi bowlers, bowled their heart out on a wicket which had nothing for the bowlers. Wagner especially, he bowled with the same energy throughout and also bowled long spells. He was the pick of the bowlers ending with three big wickets of, Mendis and Chandimal the half centurions and the third one was of Roshen Silva. He was well supported by Southee who also picked two. Boult and Patel did look threatening but did not have luck on their side.
  • After the first session being a wicket-less one and just one wicket falling in the second, we thought, the Lankans are once again on the verge of pulling off a miracle here. However, Angelo Mathew's injury changed the whole course of the game. The former Lankan skipper did not walk out to bat in the last session and that proved to be the opening the Kiwis needed. They then got rid of Chandimal quickly, Dickwella also did not last for long. Roshen Silva was stubborn but he too got out to a loose shot. A Day 4 finish looked on the cards. Perera and Lakmal though battled hard and ensured we head into Day 5.
  • A happy New Zealand team walk off the field, they have turned it around in the last session by picking up 5 wickets. The Lankans have no recognized batsman left and with Angelo Mathews not sure of batting, the hosts are firm favorites to take the series.
