  • Should be exciting if it goes the way the last two games did. Can Sri Lanka salvage some pride or will the Black Caps complete the clean sweep? Join us for the chase in some time.
  • So once more, Sri Lanka have faltered with the old ball. They conceded 57 runs off the last 3 overs. The target set is really huge and Sri Lanka will have to go at an RPO of more than 7 right from the start. Not going to be easy but with the series already gone, they have nothing to lose and should go for the win.
  • Henry Nicholls is caught down for a chat. He feels great to have a big total on the on the board and feels good to contribute to it. Hopes that his side defends it. On batting with Ross Taylor, he reckons that they complement each other well. Mentions that it was fun and the crowd has come in good numbers.
  • In came Henry Nicholls and along with Ross Taylor kept the scoreboard ticking early on with singles and doubles. Once they got set, they went bonkers. Ross Taylor started it off and got to his 20th ODI century. He reached 137 before finally falling to Malinga but that did not stop Nicholls. In fact, he went into fifth gear and smashed the balls to all parts en route to his maiden ODI ton. He and Neesham put up a 63-run unbeaten stand (off 23 balls) and powered New Zealand to a total of 364 which looks way above par on this wicket. Facing the likes of Ish Sodhi would not be easy on this wicket which is holding up slightly.
  • What an incredible batting performance! 161/3 was the score at the 30-over mark and they scored 203 runs in the next 20 overs. A complete batting performance by the Kiwis even though the openers went quite cheaply. 32 fours and 9 sixes in this innings. Tells you quite a story. A bowler of Lasith Malinga's calibre being destroyed at the back end. The innings started off in a slow fashion, with the first Powerplay seeing the Kiwis get to 55 for the loss of two wickets. Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor then joined hands to put up a stand of 116 and set the platform up for the bashers who would come in later. Williamson looked really well set before getting out after his fifty.
  • 49.6 Just a bye off the final ball. A clever slower one by the bowler, angling down, Nicholls tries to be cheeky with his paddle scoop but fails to connect. They cross and New Zealand end on a massive 364/4, with 24 runs coming off the last over!
  • 49.5 NOT OUT! He is super quick! A full toss this time, on off, it's forced down to long off and Nicholls scampers back for the second run. The throw from the deep is towards the non-striker's end where the bowler cannot collect it cleanly and the ball eventually comes to the keeper who breaks the stumps. Seems the batsman could just be in due to the ball being slowed down slightly. They appeal and it's referred upstairs. The replays find Henry safely in. 23 from the over so far, total carnage!
  • Appeal for a run out! The square leg umpire has taken this one upstairs.
  • 49.4 SIX! Out of here! A slower short delivery outside off, Nicholls picks it and smokes it over mid-wicket for a biggie. Insane hitting!
  • 49.4 NO BALL! Above waist height! Full toss on off, Nicholls goes uppishly over cover-point region for a boundary. Free Hit coming up...
  • 49.3 A touch short on middle, Henry pulls it through mid-wicket for a couple of runs.
  • 49.2 FOUR! Two in two. Fuller delivery on off, Nicholls drives it through the cover region and the ball races away. What a start for the Kiwis in this over!
  • 49.1 FOUR! Scintillating stuff from Nicholls. Slower delivery on a length, Nicholls whacks it in front of deep square leg for a boundary.
  • 48.6 SIX! HUGE! 19 off the over! Malinga has conceded more than 90 in his quota of overs. The second time he has done that in ODIs. Coming to this delivery, it's a length ball on middle and leg, Neesham gets his front leg out of the way and smashes it over cow corner deep into the crowd. Incredible batting but very poor bowling. 340/4
  • 48.6 Wide! A short ball that is way off the radar! Goes too short, almost a half-tracker. The ball bounces over the head of the batsman and down the leg side as well. Wide signalled by the umpire without any hesitation.
  • 48.5 FOUR! Neesham gets into the act this time. Slower ball on the ribs, James swivels and gets it fine on the leg side and away from a diving Dickwella. No stopping that once it has passed the wicket-keeper.
  • 48.4 Short of a length delivery, slower in pace. Pulled away for a single to deep mid-wicket.
  • 48.3 Slower bouncer on leg stump, Henry comes into the line and tries to run it down fine on the leg side but misses the ball completely. Asks politely for a wide but the umpire is not interested.
  • 48.2 SIX! Hundred for Nicholls! His maiden one in ODIs. Deserved this. Has batted brilliantly. Length ball on the pads and Nicholls just smashes it over deep square leg nonchalantly. He then removes his helmet and just raises both his hands as he faces the pavilion. Lovely batting!
  • 48.1 DROPPED! Sitter dropped by Pradeep. Malinga bowls it full on middle, Neesham flicks it uppishly but straight to the mid-wicket fielder who drops an easy catch. One run added to the total.
  • 47.6 Short of a length outside off, pushed away wide of cover for a couple of runs bu Nicholls. That is really good running. 321/4
  • 47.5 FOUR! Outside edge and runs fine of short third man for a boundary! The game is so unfair on the bowler at times! Good yorker length ball outside off and Nicholls goes for the drive but manages to only get an outside edge that runs fine of short third man to the fence. Nicholls moves into the 90s.
  • Ross Taylor gives a quick interview on his way back. He is delighted to get a century and says that at the start of the match, they would have taken a score of 300. Adds that it's a good wicket and hopes they take this total close to 320-330. Mentions that he is just keeping it simple and is happy that it has worked. On scoring his 20th ODI hundred, he replies that he would have taken that at the start of his career and hopes to get a few more.
  • 47.4 Slower ball on a length outside off, keeps a tad low. Nicholls tries to sweep it away over fine leg but the lack of pace makes him miss the ball.
  • 47.3 SIX! Just over. It was on a length on off, Nicholls gets to the pitch of it and lofts it over long on for a biggie.
  • 47.2 Full toss on middle, Neesham lofts it over mid on for a single.
  • 47.1 Length delivery this time on off, Neesham drives it towards mid off.
  • 47.1 WIDE! Starts with a wide down leg. Neesham still tries to flick it but misses. The umpire signals a wide.
  • Nuwan Pradeep will bowl the 48th over.
  • 46.6 FOUR! Short and easily dispatched away to the deep mid-wicket boundary by the set batsman. It was a slower short of a length ball and just outside off. Nicholls waits for it and then muscles it away to the right of the fielder in the deep at mid-wicket. No chance for him to come around and stop it. Lovely batting this! Malinga's over which was brilliant so far is spoiled by the four off the last ball. 307/4
  • 46.5 Slower ball bouncer once more first up to Neesham. He is too early into the pull and gets hit on the forearm. Runs through for a leg bye.
  • 46.4 Fuller length outside off, almost yorker length. Nicholls drives it to long off for a single.
  • 46.3 Slower one to Nicholls outside off. He goes for a huge slog but is foxed by the pace, or the lack of it should I say?
  • James Neesham in at number 6.
  • 46.2 OUT! Taylor has holed out this time! A brilliant innings from Rosco comes to an end. Malinga gets his man in the end. Goes for the slower ball, on a length. The right-handed batsman goes for the pull and though he timed it quite well, he found Dhananjaya de Silva at deep square leg. Taylor did read the pace of the delivery but unfortunately for him, he couldn't get the placement right. Malinga picks up his third and a stunning innings of 137 comes to an end.
  • 46.1 Gets the yorker on a perfect length this time, Nicholls still manages to jam this down the ground to long off for a single.
  • 45.6 Dropped by the bowler! Another full ball has been absolutely smashed straight back to the bowler and Sandakan put down a very tough chance. Parried it behind for a run. Only 5 from this over but New Zealand have amassed 66 in the last 6 overs. 300 up! 300/3
  • 45.5 Full and wide outside off, Ross drills his drive through extra cover for one.
  • 45.4 Extra loop on this one as it lands very full on middle, Taylor digs it out back to the bowler.
  • 45.3 Flatter and fuller on leg, it's swept behind square leg for a single.
  • 45.2 Turning in from around off, Ross gets back and taps it down towards short third man for one. 150-run stand comes up!
  • 45.1 That's been smashed! Flighted and full on off, Nicholls hammers it straight back and it cannons onto the stumps at the other end. After that it rolls behind for a run.
  • 44.6 SIX! Malinga is bowling half-volley after half-volley here. Misses his length once more and Taylor gets under this and lofts it over long on once more. The fielder at the fence is a mere spectator as the ball goes way into the crowd. Brilliant from the Kiwis, not so much from the Lankan skipper. 19 off this over, too expensive. 295/3
  • 44.5 Slower bouncer! Nicholls is foxed by it as he is early into his pull which he mistimes towards deep mid-wicket. Luckily, the ball went in no man's land. Single taken.
  • 44.4 FOUR! Absolutely bashed this down the ground. Going for a yorker outside off, taken on the full by Nicholls and he gets this really straight. Long off runs to his left and dives to try save the four but cannot stop the ball completely and it runs over the rope. This is beginning to become an expensive over.
  • 44.3 Full toss on middle and leg, Taylor flicks it away fine on the leg side for a single. Ross feels he missed out there.
  • 44.2 SIX! In the slot and very, very easy for Taylor. Malinga misses his length and gets this as a half-volley on off stump, Ross gets under it and smashes it away for a maximum. It goes deep in the crowd. Hugeeee!!!
  • 44.1 Very full outside off, hit away to long on by Nicholls for a single.
  • 43.6 Another ball on off, swept away by the southpaw for a single to deep square leg. 276/3
  • 43.5 Shortens the length this time seeing the batsman come down the wicket. Nicholls went for the sweep and missed the shot. Gets hit on the hip. No run.
  • 43.4 Wide outside off and very quick, Ross slashes it hard and gets it to deep cover. Single taken, the fourth in four balls.
  • 43.3 Comes down the wicket to this flighted one on off, drives to long off for a single.
  • 43.2 Flatter one on the pads, Taylor works it to mid-wicket for a run.
  • 43.1 Flatter one outside off, Nicholls sweeps this away for a single to deep square leg.
  • Lakshan Sandakan returns to have another go.
  • 42.6 NOT OUT! Just in! By a whisker! Fuller length outside off, jammed out to mid-wicket by Taylor. The batsmen wanted two and ran back as the fielder in the deep picked it up and threw the ball at the non-striker's end. Hit the stumps! The decision was referred upstairs but the replays rolled in and showed that the batsman was just in. Lucky shave! 271/3
  • Run out appeal! It's referred upstairs...
  • 42.5 Fuller outside off, driven through the covers for a single by the lefty.
  • 42.4 Slightly slower this time outside off, Ross drives this hard but straight to cover. A quick single is taken as the fielder has a shy at the non-striker's end but misses.
  • 42.3 SIX! Picked up and deposited just over the rope for a maximum towards long on. Misses his yorker by a few inches, Taylor gets under the ball as he lifts it right back over the bowler's head and takes maximum toll.
  • 42.2 Perfect yorker! Nicholls does really well to dig it out towards mid off and gets a single as well. Good cricket all around.
  • 42.1 Fuller one outside off, driven wide of the deep cover fielder. Couple taken.
  • 41.6 Attempts another slog but this time the ball runs to deep mid-wicket for a single. 24 in the last two overs. 258/3
  • 41.5 FOUR! This is smashed! In the gap too and all the way for a boundary to cow corner. Flatter ball outside off and Nicholls went down on one knee and flat-batted it wide of long on. No chance for the fielders there.
  • 41.4 Another one on middle and leg to Taylor who just flicks it away to deep mid-wicket for a single.

  • 40.6 Gets back and punches it to wide long on for a brace. 15 from the over, New Zealand pressing the accelerator. 249/3
  • 40.5 100-run stand comes up! Full toss on middle, Nicholls forces it towards mid on where the fielder dives and parries it behind. The long off fielder runs across to his left, puts in a diving effort and he parries it towards long on. All in all three taken by the batsmen after the ball took a world tour.
  • 40.4 7th ODI fifty for Henry Nicholls! A length ball around off, Nicholls flicks it with fine timing through square leg for a couple of runs. Excellent knock by the southpaw, he has played a nice role in this partnership with Taylor.
  • 40.3 Full toss on the pads, turned through square leg for a run.
  • 40.2 SIX! A bit of Dhoni in that shot! Very full and on middle, angling down, Taylor makes room and swings his blade firmly across the line. Makes fine connection and sends it packing over mid-wicket for a biggie.
  • 40.1 Fullish and on middle, knocked down to long off for a run.
  • Lasith Malinga back on.
  • 39.6 NOT OUT! The original decision stays. Fuller and quicker on middle and leg, Taylor tries to sweep it but is hit on the front pad. The bowler appeals and umpire shakes his head. Malinga straightaway goes for the review. The replay shows no inside edge and also it to be missing the stumps. Sri Lanka lose the review. Delight for the Kiwis. 234/3
  • Review time! Ross Taylor fails to connect with his attempted sweep shot and is rapped on the pads. Sri Lanka put in an unsuccessful appeal for an lbw. They are reviewing it. Looks to be missing leg.
  • 39.5 Shorter one, punched back down the ground towards the bowler.
  • 39.4 Flatter one on middle, worked towards mid-wicket from the crease by Nicholls for a single.
  • 39.3 CENTURY FOR TAYLOR! Down the ground to long on for a single and he gets it! His 20th century in ODIs! Flatter ball on middle, pushed back in the direction of the bowler who failed to stop it. Taylor gets to the other end and to the landmark. What an innings it has been, was always coming! 54 in the first game, 90 in the second. Was looking in great form and finally gets his reward.

  • 37.5 Very full and on middle, Taylor walks into this drive to long on and gets a run.
  • 37.4 Could have been a chance if he had picked it up cleanly! Fuller one outside off, HN taps it towards covers and goes for a quick single. The fielder at cover doesn't pick up the ball cleanly. Could have been a chance had he taken it and hit the stumps at the non-striker's end.

  • 5.4 FOUR! Nearly does a Munro. Pradeep puts it on a shorter length outside off and Taylor rocks back to slap it square of the wicket on the off side. But the ball doesn't rise much and gathers the inside edge. It narrowly misses the sticks before speeding away to the fine leg fence.
  • 5.3 Uppish! This pitch is already acting up. Once again the ball sticks a bit on the surface as it lands on a full length on middle. Taylor tries to flick but is early into the shot. Ends up pushing it aerially but safely towards mid on.
  • 5.2 Once again Nuwan lands it on a length just outside off, Ross is behind the line as he blocks it back with a straight bat.
  • 5.1 Begins his spell with a length ball around off, angling in, Taylor gets forward and defends it back.
  • Nuwan Pradeep is the first bowling change. Two slips and a gully in place.
  • 4.6 FIVE RUNS! Poor judgement of a run followed by overthrows! Lots of chaos out there in the middle. Length ball outside off and Taylor pushes it with soft hands just wide of mid off. Sets off for a single but the ball was timed just a little too well and went to Thisara Perera at mid off quite fast. He picks it up cleanly and throws it at the non-striker's end, all in one go. The ball misses the stumps though, would have been really close had he hit. The fielder backing up cannot get around in time and four overthrows result. Sri Lanka won't mind though, things are happening for them and the NZ batsmen seem to be in a little panic mode here. It is a 50-over game, can take a little more time here to settle down. 36/2
  • 4.5 Good ball first up to the new batsman. Fuller length on middle and slightly swinging away late. Taylor does well to bring his bat down in time and defend it back down towards the bowler.
  • Ross Taylor walks in next with New Zealand in a spot of bother.
  • 4.4 OUT! Chopped on! Would you believe it! Outside off, pretty wide that too. Colin Munro goes for the expansive drive but the ball tails in ever so slightly and takes the inside edge. It goes back to knock the off stump. The southpaw can't believe his luck and waits for a second at the crease before walking back in disgust. SL and Malinga have two inside the fifth over.
  • 4.3 FOUR! Slower ball, 110.5 clicks only but Munro has read it out of the hands. Waits for the ball to come at him outside off stump and he cuts it away in the gap. The ground has enough pace on it to take the ball to the fence.
  • 4.2 Fuller on this occasion, almost sneaks through. Munro does well to jam it away towards square leg.
  • 4.1 Length ball on middle and coming in slightly, Munro turns this away square on the leg side for a couple.
  • 3.6 Another good ball outside off to end the over, KW looks to push it on the off side but it gets the bottom edge and the ball drops down right on the pitch. Good over other than that one ball on the pads. 25/1
  • 3.5 Length ball outside off, Kane angles his bat and pushes this ball towards gully.
  • 3.4 FOUR! Cannot bowl there with a 7-2 off side field. A tough field no doubt but Chameera has to look to keep the ball outside off. Throws this on the pads of Williamson who happily flicks it away in the gap through mid-wicket all the way for a boundary. Easy pickings.
  • 3.3 Good line and length from Chameera. Just on top of off stump, defended back down by Kane coming a little ahead.

  • 2.5 Well left outside off by the NZ skipper this time.
  • 2.4 Hurls this on middle and leg, defended with soft hands back down the ground.
  • 2.3 Beaten! Outside off, and shapes away pretty late. Williamson was on the crease trying to defend this on the off side. The ball beats him on the outside.
  • 2.2 EDGED AND FOUR! That was the difference between Guptill and Williamson. Why Williamson is still out there is because of his soft hands on this one. Another length ball outside off and swinging away a little, Kane waits for the ball to come at him unlike Guptill on the previous ball. The ball takes the edge but does not carry to slip. Runs wide of him and fine for a boundary. Good bowling though from Lasith.
  • The captain Kane Williamson comes to bat at no. 3.
  • 2.1 OUT! Caught at gully! Malinga strikes again early, just like he has done in the past two matches. Throws this one outside off on a length, Guptill pushes at it with hard hands. The ball moves away a bit and goes off the thick outside edge. Carries to Kusal Mendis at gully, at a good height. Easy catch taken. Sri Lanka draw first blood. Guptill departs early, a big wicket as we know what he can do when he plays a big innings.
  • 1.6 EDGED AND FOUR! Outside off on a length, Munro goes to cut but gets a thick outside edge that flies wide of slip. Third man is square, the ball runs away to the fence. 14 from the over, an expensive beginning from Chameera. 16/0
  • 1.5 Brings it outside off on a length, Martin Guptill is ahead to push this ball down the ground. Gets a thick outside edge that runs wide of point for a single down to third man.
  • 1.4 Good length ball on middle to the right-hander. Guptill is ahead in defense.
  • 1.3 Around the wicket, hurled in at the thigh pads, jammed away on to the leg side coming half-forward. Single taken.
  • 1.2 FOUR! Two in two! Slower ball this time as Chameera just rolls his fingers over on the ball as he delivered it. The batsman actually was deceived as Munro tried to lift it over mid off. Gets just enough to go over the head of the fielder and to the fence for a boundary. Expensive start from Dushmantha.
  • 1.1 FOUR! Welcomed with a boundary. Length ball outside off, a gentle loosener. Munro drives and gets it in the gap through the covers. Short boundary there and a definite four.
  • Dushmantha Chameera to bowl with the other new ball.
  • 0.6 Outside off on a length to end the over, Munro tries to drive but gets the inside half of the bat and the ball rolls onto the leg side towards mid-wicket. A quick single taken and Munro retains strike. Signs of this pitch being a bit slow already showing. 2/0
  • 0.5 The radar is back to just outside leg, Munro is early into his flick and misses the ball to get hit on the thigh pad. No run though.
  • 0.4 Goes outside off on this occasion, Colin goes for the drive but misses the ball. Another one that goes to the keeper on the bounce.
  • 0.3 Straying on to the pads of the left-hander. Munro jams it out on the leg side without much foot movement.
  • 0.2 Better bounce on this occasion, on length outside off again. Guptill pushes it towards mid off and sets off for a quick single. NZ and Martin off the mark.
  • 0.1 A length ball outside off to start off with, the ball seems to have held up in the surface and Guptill who was looking to defend misses the ball. It goes on a bounce to the keeper, the first ball of the day!
  • The two opening batsmen, Martin Guptill and Colin Munro are out in the middle. Fielders in position. Lasith Malinga to start proceedings for the Lankans. Two slips in place. Last ODI set to get underway! Let's go...
  • Pitch report - Mark Richardson with the pitch report. He says it looks like a perfect batting surface. Also says there is a tinge of green grass which will help the pacers with the new ball. Reckons if the bowlers put the ball in right areas, they will get wickets here. Mentions the ground is not that big, especially square of the wicket and there could be a lot of runs. Also adds 275 is a par score here and teams chasing have won 7 out of 9 games.
  • New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson says that even he would have opted to bowl. Reckons that the surface looks a good one. Suggests that they will have to bat well initially. Says that they have made one change to their side where Lockie Ferguson comes in for Trent Boult. Ends saying that they will look to improve their fielding.
  • Sri Lankan skipper Lasith Malinga says that their batters are chasing well in the past two games so he wants to do the same thing again. Mentions that they have to bowl well in the first innings. Reckons that the middle order has not been in the best form and wants to correct that. Suggests there is a good chance for them to win the game. Says that they have made three changes to the side. Dinesh Chandimal, Asela Gunaratne and Seekkuge Prasanna are out. Dasun Shanaka, Dhananjaya de Silva and Dushmantha Chameera are in.
  • TOSS - Lasith Malinga wins the toss and SRI LANKA WILL FIELD!
  • For New Zealand, they are yet to get a convincing win in spite of bagging the series. In both games, they got a scare and were lucky to be on the winning side. Much like the visiting team, their bowling hasn't been on top while there were as many as six catches put down (technically) which nearly cost them the last match. The Black Caps would like to fine-tune these areas months before the World Cup. They might shuffle their playing XI for this match and that will give Sri Lanka an opportunity to taste their first success on this tour. We are expecting yet another cracking contest. Stay with us for more updates...
  • Welcome ladies and gentlemen for the third ODI with the series already settled in favour of the home team! The action now shifts to Nelson after a couple of exciting ODIs in Mount Maunganui. A scintillating 74-ball 140 by Thisara Perera brought Sri Lanka within sight of an outstanding win in the last match but as has been the case with them, they somehow fail to cross the final hurdle. Even in the first match, Kusal Perera's valiant century gave them hope but once again the collective batting effort was lacking. They would hope for things to change and improve for better in the last match to avoid a clean sweep. Bowling is another area the tourists would like to work on as they have been conceding runs at a brisk rate at the death with their bowlers unable to create pressure (by picking wickets) in the middle.

New Zealand Vs Sri Lanka Live Score (ODI) Ball by Ball Commentary

  • That is all we have for you from this ODI series. The Kiwis pick up the trophy and pose with it. The two sides now have a one-off T20I game to go. That game will be played on 11th January at the Eden Park, Auckland at 0700 local (0600 GMT). Do join in for that. Till then, cheers!
  • Kane Williamson says that he is happy to see improvement in every game. Reckons that they were put under pressure in all the games and they did well top come on top. Credits Taylor and Nicholls for their knock today. Adds saying that this is a great team and hopes to continue winning games. On the World Cup he feels that there is still time for it and wants to keep improving on their cricket. Ends saying that they are happy to win 3-0.
  • Lasith Malinga says the top 4 are getting runs, but he is disappointed that in the last 15 overs they are not bowling well and going for plenty of runs. Also says before the world cup, they need to get team formation right. Mentions Dickwella and Kusal Perera are playing well and would like them to continue their good form. Ends by saying he is enjoying the captaincy and would like the results going in his way in the upcoming matches.
  • Man of the Match, Ross Taylor, feels that they were nervous at the start and wanted to get things back together. Mentions that all the three games were good and the guys raised their hands and played well. On his batting he mentions that he keeps things simple. On the team batting he says that they grind up first and then catch up well to put the icing on the cake later.
  • For New Zealand, Lockie Ferguson was the most impressive bowler on show. He was quick and also used smart variations to deceive the batsmen. The other pacers though were not too convincing. Ish Sodhi with a 3-fer also left his impact as he along with skipper Kane Williamson bowled some tidy overs to create pressure.
  • Once Sri Lanka's top three departed, the middle order failed to cope up with the pressure. The century partnership between Thisara Perera and Danushka Gunathilaka reignited some hope in the Lankan camp but once the former fell to a stunning catch by Martin Guptill, the writing was on the wall. The last five wickets went down for just 5 runs as New Zealand registered a convincing win to make it 3-0.
  • A big win for the Kiwis this time! They weren't clinical in the previous two games but today everything clicked. Powered by Taylor and Nicholls' centuries, they posted a massive total on the board and then their bowlers put their best foot forward. However, at the beginning, the Lankan openers managed to scare them. In fact, they were going on smoothly initially and did well to keep the required rate under control.
  • 41.4 OUT! Timber! All over for Sri Lanka. New Zealand win by 115 runs and take the series 3-0! Sodhi comes up with a googly for the number 11 batsman. He lands it outside off and gets it to spin back in. Pradeep swings his bat cluelessly and it goes under his bat to disturb the stumps. The Kiwi players are celebrating in the middle and shaking hands with the Sri Lankan batsmen.
  • 41.3 Tossed up ball on middle, Nuwan gets on the front foot in defense.
  • 41.2 Full and flighted on the pads, it's played off the pads to square leg.
  • Nuwan Pradeep is the last man to the crease. A slip in place.
  • 41.1 OUT! Stumped! Lovely googly! The ninth one is gone! Malinga goes off the first ball he faces. Flighted beautifully on middle and Lasith comes down the track to slog it over mid-wicket. But what he doesn't read is the googly. The ball goes the other way after landing and the SL skipper is completely at sea. Seifert whips the bails off immediately. From 244/5 to 249/9. 4 wickets for 5 runs. The Lions have imploded quite spectacularly. One to go for 3-0.
  • Ish Sodhi back for another spell.
  • 40.6 Play and a miss! Outside off, a speedy one, Sandakan throws his bat at it and misses. A couple of wickets from the over! 249/8
  • Lakshan Sandakan walks in at number 10.
  • 40.5 OUT! Another one bites the dust and Ferguson gets his fourth! As mentioned earlier also, Gunathilaka is quite stiff and that means he has very limited movement inside the crease. Lockie hurls in a sharp length ball at 142.2 kph and angles it into the left-hander. Danushka remains glued inside the crease, probably in an attempt to run it down to third man but it takes the bottom half of his bat and cannons onto the stumps. The last recognized batsman is also sent packing. End is nigh for Sri Lanka.
  • 40.4 Fullish and on off, driven off the front foot to extra cover.
  • 40.3 Oohhhh...this one nearly rolls back onto the stumps. A length ball angling into the batsman, Danushka offers a straight bat in defense but after blocking the ball moves back and goes over the stumps. Gunathilaka, who's a bit stiff, stood there watching the ball and didn't even try to shoo it away with his bat. Lucky there.
  • Lasith Malinga, the skipper makes his way to the middle now.
  • 40.2 OUT! Pouched by Southee running to the left from mid off. Around the wicket and bowled at good pace, 142.8 clicks outside off stump. Chameera just tries to loft the ball over cover but it just goes up in the air. Southee runs to his left and takes the catch at extra cover. Good take. The seventh one goes, I sense just formalities remaining now.
  • 40.2 Wide! Short and this one is down the leg side, the batsman leaves and the umpire stretches his arms.
  • 40.1 Speeds in from 'round the wicket and digs in a bouncer around leg, Chameera ducks.
  • 39.6 Played to the point region by the batsman. They pick up a single. 248/6
  • 39.5 Beaten! On a length outside off, Chameera pushes at it inside the line and misses.
  • 39.4 Defended off the back foot by the batsman.
  • 39.4 Bouncer again, called a wide this time as it goes well over the head of the batsman.
  • 39.3 Too full in length and around off, Chameera brings down his bat in time and digs it out towards point.
  • 39.2 Bouncer to the number 8 batsman. Chameera sits underneath it.
  • 39.1 A touch short and outside off, Gunathilaka stays back and runs it down to third man for a run.
  • 38.6 Too full and on off, Chameera pushes it out with an open-faced bat to the off side. 245/6
  • 38.5 Length ball outside off, guided away to third man for a single.
  • 38.4 Outside off on a length and the ball skids on after landing. Gunathilaka misses his attempted cut shot.
  • Dushmantha Chameera is the next batsman to the crease.
  • 38.3 OUT! Martin Guptill flies like Superman and has taken a stunner! Take a bow, MG! Slower delivery has done the magic here. New Zealand have managed to remove the danger man and Sri Lanka's last hope is back in the pavilion. It's short and around off, Perera goes deep inside the crease and tries to flat-bat it through the line. But it catches the outside half of his bat and loops in the air behind backward point. Guptill runs back a bit, sticks his left hand out and plucks a stunning one-handed catch with a dive. Wow, catches like these win you matches. End of yet another threatening knock by Thisara Perera as well as the 101-run partnership that was really looking like taking the game away from the Kiwis. New Zealand can now smell 3-0!
  • 38.2 Deceives the batsman with the slower one. Short and angling in from 'round the wicket, at 116.1 kph, Perera hops back and tries to slam it over point but fails to connect.

  • 37.4 FOUR! Nicely played! Just uses the pace of the bowler and lifts it over the infield. A touch short and around middle and off, Perera hangs back and guides it over short third man for a boundary. The 100-run stand is up between these two.
  • 37.4 Wide! A wild delivery, way wide outside off, Thisara flashes and misses.
  • 37.3 Play and a miss! Appeared to be a slower bouncer. But the speedgun showed the pace to be 132.1 kph. Thisara tries playing the ramp shot but fails to connect.
  • 37.2 Angles in a length ball on middle and leg, Gunathilaka nudges it off his pads towards square leg and jogs across to the other end.
  • 37.1 Short in length and wide outside off, Perera stays back-footed and powers it over covers. There is a sweeper in place and only a run results.
  • Matt Henry returns into the attack. 129 needed off 78 balls.
  • 36.6 FOUR! Add insult to injury! Third boundary of the over. Short of a length aimed at the ribs, Gunathilaka swivels and finds the gap behind square leg, beating fine leg to his right. Brilliant over for the Lankans. 15 off it in the end. They're surely in the game. 236/5
  • 36.5 On the pads, worked away to deep square leg for a single.
  • 36.4 DROPPED! Is this the second ODI all over again? Thisara going for the big hits, smashing sixes and NZ dropping catches. Looks like. This is a slower ball outside off, and Perera tries to loft it over mid off. Mistimes this one as he gets the thick outside half and it carries to Taylor at cover. He tumbles while trying to take catch and grasses the opportunity. Another life for TP!
  • 36.4 Wide! The pressure is showing as he sprays this down the leg side. The umpire signals wide.
  • 36.3 FOUR! Two in two! Southee goes for the bouncer on middle and leg, Perera goes for the pull. Gets a top edge and it flies above the keeper's head for a boundary. Tim under pressure here.

  • Tim Southee is back on.
  • 35.6 Flatter one outside off once more, driven hard in the gap through the covers for another couple. 221/5

  • 35.1 Flighted one on middle, almost yorker length. Gunathilaka digs it out towards cover and gets a single.
  • 34.6 Short one outside off, this time Danushka guides it down to third man for a single. Keeps strike as well. 214/5

  • 34.4 Shorter one outside off, punched away off the back foot towards deep cover for a single.
  • 34.3 Ouch! What was Gunathilaka trying to do there? Looks like it was a leg cutter on middle and came in after landing. Danushka expected it go straight as he wanted to dab it down to third man. The ball comes in and hits him on his side. He looks okay to continue though.
  • 34.2 Wide outside off on a full length, Perera goes for the slog over cow corner reaching out to the ball. Gets an inside edge that runs between the stumps and his legs for a single. Lucky not to have chopped on.
  • 34.1 A touch short around off, angling away, Gunathilaka stays back and plays it to the left of point for a run.
  • Drinks break! New Zealand have picked up a few wickets and have sent half the side back to the pavillion. But they will know that the job is not done. The danger man Thisara Perera is still out there and has just warmed up with a few sixes. Can he take them home today? 156 more required off the remaining sixteen overs. James Neesham to bowl after the Drinks break.
  • 33.6 Taps it down to point and keeps strike with himself. 14 coming from this over, 156 needed off 96 balls. 209/5
  • 33.5 Half-tracker outside off, punched to sweeper cover for one.

  • 32.1 Back of a length delivery on middle, dragged off the inside half of the bat to mid-wicket for one.

  • Tim Southee is back on.
  • 31.6 Flatter and on middle, Gunathilaka covers the line and defends it back. Bowling from this end has been quite economical with the spinners operating. 192/5
  • 31.5 Tossed up ball on middle, Perera eases it through mid-wicket for a run.
  • 31.4 Tossed up and wide outside off. Thisara leaves it thinking it to be called a wide. Not given. Rightly so. Was inside the tramline.

  • The bowler pulls out.

  • 29.1 Flatter and shorter on off, it's pushed firmly down to long on for one.
  • A change of bats here for Thisara Perera. Maybe he is looking for the one which helped him smash 140 in the previous game.
  • 28.6 Digs in a short ball on middle, pulled to deep mid-wicket for one. 12 from the over, 190 needed off 126 balls. This partnership is now worth 32 runs. 175/5

  • 28.4 Shortish on off, punched from the crease to covers.

  • 24.4 The batsman defends it from within the crease.
  • 24.3 Bouncer at 141.8 kph, Danushka tries to duck by taking his eyes off the ball and takes a blow on his body. He already is stiff and this is the last thing he would wish for.

  • 24.1 Fullish and outside off, it's dug out to covers.

  • Danushka Gunathilaka is in at number 7, an unfamiliar batting position? Also, Kane Williamson comes onto bowl, maybe some tactical play going on here!
  • 22.6 OUT! Lockie Ferguson worked on good pace and has finally dismissed Kusal. Great comeback from him after getting pulled for a six on the first ball. Steams in from 'round the wicket and dishes out a sharp fuller length ball outside off at 144.2 kph. Kusal stands back to swing his bat across the line but fails to middle his shot. Also, there is some noise as it goes behind to the keeper. Seifert takes the catch, he appeals and the umpire agrees. KP doesn't look too sure but still goes for the DRS after consulting his partner. The replays roll in and Hotspot finds a tiny spot on his bat. The Ultra Edge also picks that disturbance. Kusal has to walk back. Ferguson who thought otherwise is delighted. He didn't appeal also and credit to the wicketkeeper here. Body blow to Sri Lanka. 143/5
  • Kusal Perera has been adjudged caught behind! He walks forward towards his partner and then takes the DRS. Ain't looking too sure there.
  • 22.5 Bowls fire again. 148.8 kph delivery and it's speared fuller on off, Kusal digs it back to the bowler who jumps, sticks his right hand out and makes the half-stop.
  • 22.4 Finds the middle of the bat but it has gone straight to the cover fielder. A length delivery outside off, Kusal stays back to force the issue but fails to find the gap.
  • 22.3 Once again the excessive pace results in the mistiming of the shot. On a length outside off, Kusal plays it back off the inner half of his bat.
  • 22.2 Beaten all ends up! That's a sharp delivery. Bowled at 148.7 kph. Lockie has switched the angle. Comes steaming in from 'round the wicket and hurls in a good length ball outside off. Kusal tries to punch it from the crease but is beaten on the inside edge.
  • 22.1 SIX! Up and over! Short in length and on middle, Kusal turns inside the crease and nails his pull shot in front of square leg. There is a fielder near the boundary line but he is a mere spectator. Good start to the over.

  • 20.6 Short outside off, Thisara cuts this hard but straight to the fielder at cover-point who makes a tumbling stop. No run. 132/4
  • 20.5 Fuller length ball outside off, hit hard towards mid off. 'The Pereras' exchange strike.
  • 20.4 Length ball outside off, punched towards cover from the crease.
  • 20.3 FOUR! Pulled away by Kusal! Short of a length once more and outside off, KP has enough time to rock back and pull this through mid-wicket. Square leg cannot come around in time to stop it. Welcome boundary for the Lankans.
  • 20.2 Short of a length outside off, kept out towards point by Kusal riding the bounce of the ball.
  • Kusal Perera seems to have hurt his finger while playing this ball. It has bounced more and caught him on the gloves. The physio is out there in the middle and we have a halt in play.
  • 20.1 Short length ball aimed at the hips, Kusal keeps it out towards square leg while he was on his toes. Looks to have got him on the glove.

  • 18.4 Played to the point region by the batsman.
  • 18.3 Quick single! A touch short and outside off, it's tapped down towards point and they cross for a run. Guptill has a shy at the bowler's end but fails to score the direct hit.
  • 18.2 FOUR! That's the power of Thisara! Back of a length delivery outside off, the batsman hangs on the back foot and spanks it square of the wicket on the off side for a boundary. He certainly loves pace on the ball.

  • 17.3 A googly, landing full around off, Thisara is forward in defense.
  • 17.2 Flatter and on middle, the batsman goes back and punches it towards Sodhi.
  • Thisara Perera is in at number 6. No signs of Danushka Gunathilaka yet. 248 runs required off 197 balls now.
  • 17.1 OUT! LBW! Misses the ball, gets struck plumb in front and the umpire has raised his finger without a second thought! Flighted ball on middle, Shanaka goes for the sweep and is beaten in flight as he misses the ball. Caught in front of middle, the umpire raises his finger immediately. Even if the umpire hadn't given that out, the batsman would have been run out as the ball lobbed off Dasun's pads and went behind. Seifert catches it and tries to flick the stumps down but misses. Taylor behind though picks it up and removes the bails. Shanaka was in wilderment, did not know where the ball was. But it never went till there as it was adjudged LBW straightaway. Hawk Eye later on shows us that it would have gone on to hit the middle of middle stump. Sri Lanka losing their way massively after a couple of good stands early on. Four down now for 117. NZ firmly ahead in the game.
  • 16.6 FOUR! Just gives a little bit of width and Perera pounces onto it. He rocks back inside the crease and smashes it through backward point for a cracking boundary. 117/3

  • 16.1 A length ball angling into the batsman, Shanaka plays it off his pads to the leg side, not in the gap.
  • 15.6 Another flatter one, keeps a tad low on middle and leg. Dasun pulls this away to deep square leg for another single. Ends the over and retains strike. Eventful over that! 110/3
  • 15.5 Flatter one outside off, the southpaw pushes it away to deep cover for a single.
  • 15.4 Loud appeal but turned down! Looked really close! Slower through the air, lands this on a length, and the ball seems to turn a bit towards off. Shanaka misses his flick and gets rapped on the pad, in front of the wickets. There is an appeal but the umpire is not interested. Maybe height was an issue. NZ decide not to review. Replays rolling in show us that the ball was in line, struck the pad in line as well and would have gone on to clip the top of leg stump. So in hindsight, a review would have just been a waste of time.
  • 15.3 Outside off on a length, pushed away to cover-point off the front foot.
  • 15.2 Flatter ball on middle and off, Shanaka defends this ball with a straight bat from the crease.
  • Drinks break. Sri Lanka got off to a flying start with their openers firing on all cylinders. But the Kiwis have managed to bounce back in the last few overs and now with three wickets down, the touring team once again is under the pump. Let's see how they respond from hereon. Dasun Shanaka is the new batsman.
  • 15.1 OUT! The big screen flashes out! The third umpire deems it out because he feels the bat was on the line. Kusal Mendis departs without facing a ball. Huge blow for the Lankans. Flighted ball outside off, Perera defends it on the off side with soft hands and sets off for a quick single. The ball rolls in front of square on the off side and Williamson hares across to his right from the cover region. He picks up the ball and throws it in one motion. It is right into the keeper's gloves next to the stumps. Brilliant fielding. Seifert flicks off the bails in a flash and appeals. The square leg umpire takes it upstairs. The third umpire has a look at many replays from different angles. Finally even has to zoom in on one frame where the bail goes off and the bat is found to be on the line. Flashes the red light. That's a really brave decision. Was touch and go. Two wickets in two balls for New Zealand.
  • Appeal for a run out! It looks touch and go and has been referred upstairs. Let's wait and watch...
  • Kusal Mendis comes to bat at no 4.
  • 14.6 OUT! Dickwella has thrown it away! There was no need for this shot after having got a six already in this over but that is the way he plays and it has brought about his downfall. Second one goes down for the Lankans. Fuller ball outside off on a length, Niroshan goes for the lofted drive over cover. He swings hard but gets a thick outside edge. The ball has good speed on it, 139.5 clicks when delivered. It flies off the outside edge and towards the third man fielder. It seems to be dipping on Lockie Ferguson who was coming in but he does well to stay nice and low, pouching the ball comfortably. Another wicket against the run of play and Dickwella who was looking ominous departs after getting a start once more, not making it count. 107/2
