  • As for South Africa, wickets did come for them but it was a little too late following the opening masterclass by Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal. The pick of the bowlers would be Keshav Maharaj and Vernon Philander. However, seeing the ball turn so much late in the evening, the South African batters would be a bit concerned. Join us in a while for the first innings of South Africa as the Indians look to take some early wickets.
  • All the work started from the new Indian opening pair of Mayank Agarwal and Rohit Sharma. The two formed a massive opening stand of 317 runs before Rohit Sharma departed for a superbly made 176. Mayank Agarwal continued the good work after his partner departed as he stitched two 50-plus stands with Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane respectively. Mayank Agarwal stayed at the crease for the longest time as he played a mind-boggling innings of 215 runs. He departed in an attempt to increase the run rate towards the end of the day but not before making a mark on the match. Jadeja and Saha provided the finishing touches as the Indian total crossed the 500-run mark.
  • Brilliant performance from India as they have declared on 502/7. The home team put up a daunting total in front of an inexperienced South African team and it will be interesting to see how they respond on this turning surface.

  • 129.1 Flat delivery on off, Saha flicks it towards square leg and takes another single.
  • Dane Piedt is back into the attack. 15-1-91-0 so far from him. Very expensive!
  • 128.6 Flatter delivery on middle, Jadeja flicks it towards the leg side for a single. 12 runs have come off the over. 478/6
  • Funny scenes out in the middle! A couple of the South African players along with the ball boys were searching for the ball under the covers on the boundary line but were not able to find it. The cameraman shows us on the giant screen exactly where the ball is and after a lot of searching, Markram all of a sudden comes from behind and removes the ball from in between the advertising fence. Hilarious!

  • 126.4 OUT! CAUGHT! Dean Elgar takes the catch at long off and Vihari has to walk back to the pavilion. This one is floated on the off pole line, it pitches and spins away. Vihari has to walk back after his very short stay at the crease.
  • 126.3 Full and floated outside off, it pitches and turns away as it beats the outside edge of Vihari's bat.
  • 126.2 NOT OUT! Maharaj bowls a flighted delivery on middle, Vihari comes down the track to defend but misses and gets hit on the pads. The South African players put in an appeal but the umpire is unmoved. Maharaj immediately signals to his captain that he is out and Faf decides to go for the review. The replays roll in and there is no bat involved. Ball Tracker comes in and it is umpire's call on impact. Vihari had come out 3 metres ahead of the stumps and thus, it goes with the umpire's call which was not out. South Africa do not lose the review.
  • REVIEW TIME! Vihari is the man in question against Keshav Maharaj. The umpire has turned down the appeal for an LBW. Vihari is way down the track and it looks not out to the naked eye. And the decision is...

  • ... Day 2, Session 3 ...
  • The session started on a positive note for South Africa as Philander dismissed Pujara off the first ball of the second session. Agarwal looked at his fluent best during his maiden double ton in Tests. He along with Kohli and Rahane added two 50-plus stands to pile on the runs but both, Kohli and Rahane departed after getting starts. Agarwal also departed in an attempt to up the ante. Right now Jadeja and Hanuma Vihari are at the crease and after Tea, they will be looking to continue the attack on the visitors. Do join us in a short while for the final session.
  • Finally a productive session for the South Africans. A shared session one can say as the visitors managed to get 4 wickets in the session. However, they also gave away 126 runs and right now India's score stands at 450/5 which looks like a daunting task for the Proteas.

  • 117.6 OUT! CAUGHT! Rahane departs now! Brilliant captaincy by Faf du Plessis but Rahane shouldn't be falling for that after being such an experienced batsman. The South African skipper put a silly point to make the batsman think. Maharaj floats this one outside off, inviting the batsman to come down the track and Rahane obliges. He comes down the track and tries to loft this one over the man at cover but he fails to do so and hands a simple catch to Temba Bavuma. Another 50-run stand is broken. The Indian openers, Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal walk out to the middle as well with the former taking strike. Vernon Philander to continue the proceedings for the visitors on Day 2.
  • Pitch Report - On being asked about the pitch, Mr. Sunil Gavaskar suggests that nothing much has changed about the pitch. There might be a little more turn today but not much bounce on this track. Mr. Gavaskar further suggests that because of the overnight rain yesterday, the fast bowlers might be able to use it to their advantage in the first ten overs of the day.
  • Good morning folks! India were absolutely dominant on Day 1, crossing the 200-run mark without losing any wickets. They certainly looked like adding more to the score before the heavens opened up and washed out the third session. Rohit Sharma silenced his critics with a wonderful unbeaten century and would be looking to add more to his tally today. His partner, Mayank Agarwal is close to reaching his first Test ton and would be hoping to accomplish the milestone early in the first session. The Proteas had a horrid time yesterday with none of their bowlers having a good day. They would be hoping for a better performance as this match is slowly getting out of hand. It is a new day and both teams will have to start fresh. There is rain predicted today as well but let us hope that it stays away and we have an exciting day of Test cricket ahead of us. Join us in a while for all the action from Visakhapatnam!
  • ... Day 2, Session 1 ...
  • South Africa, on the other hand, need wickets and that too quickly if they are to make a comeback in this game. Their bowlers just did not look at their best on Day 1 and they need a better performance on Day 2. Will they fight back or will the Indians continue their dominance? Join us for Day 2. Till then, take care and goodbye!
  • Day 1 though was all about the Indians. Everything went right for them. They won the toss, elected to bat and their two openers are still unbeaten. One crossed his ton in his first game as an opener and the other is eyeing his first in Tests. The platform is laid for a huge first innings score and India will be exactly looking for that as they would be aiming to bat only once.
  • So the inevitable has happened! Play has been CALLED OFF for the day. That was always on the cards once they went off as it seemed improbable for the lights to improve and the rain worsened things further. A whole session is lost today so we probably will be covering up for it in the coming days.
  • Update 1455 local (0925 GMT) - No change in the update. It is pelting down and the covers are firmly placed. It is also very dark out there. Chances of any play today looks bleak.
  • We are back! The Indian openers are marking their guard once again as they will look to resume their innings. Vernon Philander is all set to continue his over. ALL THIS IS SOMETHING I WISH I COULD HAVE WRITTEN! Unfortunately, it is raining at the moment, actually, there is lightning out there. The whole ground is covered and we are in for a delay here.
  • ... Day 1 Session 3 ...
  • The openers have taken India from strength to strength. The second session too belongs to India. Hitman, looks on course to be the solution to India's opening dilemma. It was a big call and Sharma's century further vindicates the team management's decision. Mayank Agarwal, with 84 has been the perfect foil to this 202-run stand. The Proteas' spinners toiled hard through the session but they haven't troubled the Indian openers enough. However, just as a few half-chances chances seem to be getting created, the umpires went off the field for bad light. Let's hope, the sun comes back out and we get some action quickly. However, it has started to rain now and the covers are being brought on.
  • Off go the players! It is not raining but it has gotten very dark and there are dark clouds hovering above the stadium. Seems like it is going to rain any moment but the groundsmen are not rushing onto the ground so the game is probably halted due to bad light. Also, early TEA has been taken!

  • 57.4 FOUR! In the air but that flies past the gully fielder. Shorter and outside off, Rohit slashes at it. It flies off the outside edge towards Markram at gully. • 53.6 The last ball is bowled down the leg side, Agarwal lets it be. 179/0
  • 53.6 There it is! 100 for Rohit Sharma. 4th in Tests. What a way to grab the opportunity presented. He was struggling to get into the side, here, he gets a chance as an opener and he responds with a ton. Outstanding knock and the whole stadium is on its feet applauding the effort. He gets to the milestone after cutting the ball through point for one. He would now be eyeing a big one, maybe a double ton. He has three in ODIs, can he get his first in Tests here? • ... Day 1, Session 2 ...
  • South Africa, on the other hand, did start off really well, their pacers were brilliant with the new ball. However, once the shine came off and the ball stopped seaming around, their bowlers looked ineffective. The spinners haven't got a lot out of the wicket and hence, have been negotiated with ease. They need a couple of wickets to get back into the game. Do they have a hero in them who would put his hand up and do that or will India continue to dominate after the break? Join us to find out in a bit.
  • India's session without a doubt! Exactly the kind of start they would have wanted after winning the toss and electing to bat. Their openers did struggle a bit against the moving ball but did not lose their wicket. Once the conditions got easy, runs came thick and fast, especially for Rohit who played the spinners really well. Sharma got to an excellent fifty in his first innings as a Test opener. Credit to Agarwal as well, he too has played sensibly and both the batsmen are on the verge of laying down a platform for a big first innings score.

It has been a very entertaining knock from him so far. Got through the initial tough phase and now looks extremely good out there. He has a chance to make it big here. He brings out the sweep shot but due to the extra bounce, it catches the top edge. Goes uppishly but wide of Rabada at backward square leg who puts in a dive. The ball then races to the fence. 91/0

  • 0.4 Good length ball around off, Agarwal defends it out.
  • 0.3 FOUR! Off the mark in style! Room on offer outside off, Agarwal latches onto it and drives it through cover-point to earn the first boundary of the innings. That didn't come out of the middle but Agarwal won't mind.
  • 0.2 Bowls this one on middle and a good length. Agarwal this time is solid in his block.
  • 0.1 Good ball to start. A fuller one around off, Agarwal looks to block but the ball takes the outer half of the bat and goes towards point.
  • We are all set to begin! The Indian openers in the form of Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal make their way out to the middle. The South African players are also out in the middle. Vernon Philander will start the proceedings for the visitors. Two slips and a gully first up. We were ready to begin but Philander wanted a different cherry to start. All in readiness now. Here we go...
  • The players are out for their respective national anthems. First up will be South Africa's followed by the hosts'.
  • South Africa (Playing XI) - Aiden Markram, Dean Elgar, Theunis de Bruyn, Temba Bavuma, Faf du Plessis(C), Quinton de Kock (WK), Vernon Philander, Senuran Muthusamy (DEBUT), Keshav Maharaj, Dane Piedt, Kagiso Rabada
  • INDIA (Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (C), Ajinkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari, Wriddhiman Saha (WK), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami
  • Faf du Plessis, the Protea skipper, starts by saying that his Toss record is not pretty good in the sub-continent. Adds that few of the players who came here last time have retired and the younger side has a great challenge in front of them. On their playing XI, Faf says that because of the dry surface, they are going with three spinners and two pacers in their team.
  • The Indian skipper, Kohli says that it's no-brainer. Feels that the wicket is looking good to bat. On the team, Kohli says that Rohit has an excellent opportunity at the top and the team is looking forward to see him. On Saha, Kohli says that he went out because of the injury but remains the best wicket-keeper batter in the world. Talking about the opponents, Kohli says that they are a tough side and it will be hard grind for everyone.
  • Toss - Kohli flips the coin and he has won the toss. INDIA WILL BAT FIRST.
  • Pitch report - Murali Kartik is in with the pitch report. He starts by saying that the pitch is always the talk of the town in India. Gavaskar joins him and says that the pitch looks dry and there is hardly any grass. Gavaskar adds that batting will be easy on Day 1. Adds that there are few cracks which will open up as we move ahead. Gavaskar reckons that batting will become difficult from the final session on Day 2. While the spinners will have their say, Sunny G points out that if the pacers use the bouncers well, they can trouble the batters. He says that bat first after winning the toss and post 450 odd runs and the game will be in the grip of the team.
  • Time for some red-ball action then. The hosts are in red hot form. At home, they are almost invincible. The visitors, they fought well in the T20I series but this is Test cricket. The inexperienced side will look to offer similar resistance to this strong Indian unit. Last time, when they had big names like Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers, Indians had blown them away. Will they be able to present any fight or the hosts will be able to shrug them off like they did last time? We will soon have the answers. Welcome to our coverage of the match. Toss and Pitch Report in a while.

India Vs South Africa Live Score (TEST) Ball by Ball Commentary

  • The Indian team will be disappointed after dominating the first two days. Ashwin came out as the star with the ball as he took 7 wickets in all. Jadeja took a couple of wickets and Ishant Sharma took a single wicket. Join us in a short while for the Indian team's response as they will come out to bat for their second innings. Remember, this is a deteriorating surface and it will be tough for the Indian batters as well!
  • A look back at the South African innings. The Indian spinners started well as they got the visitors reeling at 63/4. However, after that the fightback from the visitors started as they notched up two 100-plus stands and came back into the game. The skipper, Faf du Plessis lead the way by scoring a half century. Quinton de Kock scored a ton but the star of the show was Dean Elgar who was at the crease for the longest time of the three as he scored a daddy hundred. Muthusamy and Kagiso Rabada also contributed some vital runs at the end, reducing the deficit for the visitors.
  • So, the South African innings has come to a close but much later than a lot of people expected. They have scored 431 and India lead by 71 runs. The hosts will be looking to add at least another 200 runs to this score before giving the South Africans a chance to bat again.
  • 131.2 OUT! LBW! Good review from India! Saha was against taking the review but Ashwin convinces the skipper to take it and it turns out to be a good one! Flatter delivery on middle and leg, Rabada looks to defend but gets hit on the front pad. Not out says the umpire. India take the review after some thought. The Ultra Edge shows that there was no bat on it. The Ball Tracker rolls in and it is three reds, it is hitting the leg stump. Ashwin gets his seventh. SOUTH AFRICA ARE BOWLED OUT FOR 431.
  • Review time! Another LBW appeal by the Indian team and this time it looks even closer.
  • 131.1 Flatter delivery on off, Rabada defends this off the front foot towards the off side.
  • Change of ends for Ashwin again.
  • 130.6 FOUR! Very well played from Muthusamy! Full delivery on middle, Senuran drives this towards the long on region for a boundary. It goes past the diving Vihari at mid on and into the fence. Crucial runs this for South Africa. 431/9

  • 130.3 Full delivery on middle, Muthusamy defends it off the front foot back to the bowler.

  • 130.1 BOUNCER! Ishant dishes this one aiming at the body of Rabada who ducks under it.
  • Ishant Sharma comes back for a second spell for the day!
  • 129.6 Darted outside off again, Senuran blocks it out. 6 consecutive balls outside off by Jadeja... maybe a plan in place? 426/9

  • 128.5 FOUR! Back-to-back boundaries for Rabada! Loopy ball on middle, Rabada drives this uppishly towards the long off region for a boundary. The Proteas trail by 76 now.
  • 128.4 FOUR! Flighted ball around middle, Rabada lofts this beautifully over the mid on region for a boundary. Excellent shot.
  • 128.3 Flighted ball on middle, Rabada defends it off the front foot.
  • 128.2 The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
  • 128.1 NOT OUT! Rabada survives! Flatter delivery on middle and leg, Rabada looks to defend it off the back foot but gets hit on the pads. The Indian players appeal for an LBW but nothing from the umpire. Ashwin convinces Kohli to go for the review. The replays roll in and Ultra Edge shows no bat. The Ball Tracker rolls in and it is umpire's call as it was clipping the top off leg stump. India do not lose the review.
  • Review time! An appeal for LBW by India and Rabada is the man in question. The umpire has given it not out but it looks very close to the naked eye. Maybe the height is an issue.

Flighted delivery on middle, Maharaj comes down the track and tries to loft it over the long on fielder for a maximum but does not time it well. • We are all set to begin Day 4! Keshav Maharaj and Senuran Muthusamy make their way out to the middle along with the Indian players. Mohammed Shami to start the proceedings for the hosts with Maharaj on strike.
  • Pitch report - Murali Kartik is down with the Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar for the pitch report. Mr. Gavaskar suggests that it looks like more wickets will fall on Day 4 as the cracks have opened up even more. The ball will grip and spin just like on Day 3. Further suggests that the key for the bowlers is to get the batsmen committed on playing strokes and then the bowlers stand a greater chance of taking wickets. Mentions that the ball should be given a lot of air just like Ashwin was doing yesterday. Gavaskar feels that India will be looking to give a target of around 300 to the visitors.
  • Day 3 belonged to South Africa as they brought the match closer to a draw but with still two innings and six sessions to go, a lot of time is left in the Test match. The standout performers for the Proteas were centurions Dean Elgar and Quinton de Kock but one cannot forget how Faf du Plessis showed how to take the attack to the opposition. Ashwin proved to be one of the few positives for India as he took his 27th 5-fer but there were a few dropped catches from the hosts which would not please their skipper, Virat Kohli.
  • Welcome to Day 4 of the first Test match between India and South Africa. It has been a riveting contest so far as the momentum has swung like a pendulum. After the first two days when everyone expected South Africa to tumble over, they have proved to be stubborn and the experienced players have given the young guns in their squad a testament of how to overcome all kinds of difficulties. So, will the rainbow nation continue to fight back or will the hosts roll over the lower batting order of the visitors? All these questions will be answered today as we bring you all the action from Visakhapatnam.
  • ... Day 4, Session 1 ...
  • So, what is in store for us on Day 4? South Africa looked to be on the ropes but they showed a great 'never say die' attitude to harass the Indian players. As for India, they are now in a limbo about what will be their gameplan. Day 4 could prove to be the most crucial day of this Test thus far. Join us on Saturday for all the action from Visakhapatnam on 0930 Local (0400 GMT). Till then, cheers and take care!
  • Dean Elgar is down for a chat with Sanjay Manjrekar. Thanks Sanjay for his congratulations but then says that the last time he came to India, he was less experienced. But since then, going around the world and playing county cricket has made him much more experienced. On the wickets to be used in India as a suggestion, Elgar smiles and says that definitely not those which were used in 2015! But on a serious note, Dean says that one needs to graft and get used to the pitch and then play his shots. Credits county cricket for enabling him to become a better player. On him hitting the ball in the air and attacking the spinners, Elgar says that these are one of the best batting conditions in Vizag and also that if you attack the spinners, they tend to lose their line. On Quinton de Kock, he calls him a genius with the bat and is certainly not surprised to see him score a century.
  • As for the Indian bowling, it was a mixed bag. They started well as Ishant Sharma dismissed Bavuma early in the day but after the attack from the South African batters started, they lost their way. They gave away runs freely and could not get a grip on the game. The experienced trio of South Africa was the first real test for them in the game and they were comfortably outplayed by them as they pulled the visitors from a crisis to a more than comfortable position. However, if one bowler is there who does deserve credit is Ravichandran Ashwin who persisted for long spells and got his rewards from time to time as he took a 5-fer and troubled the tail-enders late in the day.
  • During the first session of the day, everyone expected India to come in and roll over the visitors' batting lineup. However, after the early wicket of Temba Bavuma, the real resistance for them began. Dean Elgar and Faf du Plessis counter-attacked the Indian spin bowling and especially India's ace spin bowler, Ravichandran Ashwin. They stitched a huge partnership of 115 and showed the hosts that they are here to fight and not bow down. Following the departure of the Protean skipper on 55, Quinton de Kock came in and attacked the Indian bowlers as well not letting them settle as he scored 111. The star for the visitors although has to be Dean Elgar who played out an innings of grit as well as style to battle his way through the tough spell on Day 2 and early on Day 3. He made 160 runs and has shown the visitors how to battle against this world class Indian bowling attack.
  • Stumps on Day 3 and a totally unexpected turnaround as South Africa have fought their way back into the game. Ashwin leads India off the park after taking a 5-fer and it has been a riveting day where both the sides fought hard.
  • 117.6 Last ball of Day 3, Ashwin tosses it up and Muthusamy defends this one off the front foot. South Africa end Day 3 on 385/8. 385/8

  • Keshav Maharaj walks in at number 10, replacing Philander.
  • 113.2 OUT! BOWLED! 5-fer for Ashwin! Normal services have resumed. India's number 1 off spinner has come back after a long absence in style. This is the 27th time in 66 Tests that Ashwin has taken a 5-fer. Beautifully looped outside off, fuller in length, Philander is enticed and goes for the drive. But the ball spins a long way, takes the inside edge and hits the top of middle and leg sticks. India closing in on batting again but they might want South Africa to bat at least another 2 overs tonight. Else, the hosts might have to bat for a couple of overs.
  • 113.1 Around middle, nudged through square leg for a single.
  • 112.6 Senuran has played that off the front foot and into the ground. End of the over for Jadeja. 376/7

  • 111.6 Another one tossed up outside off, Philander blocks it out. 374/7

  • 111.4 On the pads of Vernon, he flicks it away with a wristy shot.
  • The physio is out again. Ishant doing some stretching. He is walking off the field now.
  • 111.3 Shortish this time outside off, Muthusamy cuts this one towards point. Ishant from backward point, runs to his left, puts in a slide like a football player trying to stop the ball with his feet but is unable to do so and also injures himself a bit in that attempt. Jadeja runs behind the ball and does the mopping up job as the batters take three.

  • Vernon Philander walks in at number 9, replacing de Kock.
  • 109.3 OUT! BOWLED! Going away, miss. Going away, miss. Coming in, Hit! Beauty from Ashwin. Really set up de Kock nicely. Kohli asks Saha whether they should go for the review and after taking some time, they do go for it. Replays roll in, Ultra Edge shows no bat involved. • Pitch Report - Murali Kartik is there for the pitch report along with Sunil Gavaskar. Sunny G says that the ball was keeping low yesterday and it will continue to happen today. He further says the odd ball will bounce extra as the cracks have opened up and it will grip and spin. The Proteas need to show a lot of grit and determination to play on this track just like Mayank Agarwal did yesterday.
  • Hello and a warm welcome to the coverage of Day 3 of the first Test match between India and South Africa. The hosts are running away with the game after posting a score of above 500 and then picking up three wickets late on Day 2. The visitors, on the other hand, were poor with both bat and ball. They had no answer to the bowling of Jadeja and Ashwin. They would be hoping to bat for as long as possible in order to have any chance to get closer to India's score. Will the tourists show some fight or will India continue to dominate? Join us in a while to find out.
  • ... Day 3, Session 1 ...
  • Going into Day 3, the hosts hold the upper hand and would look to bowl out South Africa as soon as possible. The visitors have their backs to the wall and will have to bat out of their skins to compete. Day 3 is said to be the moving day and this promises to be no different. That's all from us. Join us at 0930 local (0400 GMT) for an exciting day. Until then, cheers!
  • Murali Kartik is down with Mayank Agarwal for an interview. He is extremely happy with his knock and says that he cannot describe his feelings in words. Feels that if he and Rohit keep batting like this, it will be great for the team. Tells that the key to success in a partnership is to stay patient as at times when you are in good touch, you get carried away with your shot selection. He is all praise for Rohit Sharma for the way he handles the spinners. Tells that early on Day 1, there was something in the pitch for the bowlers but later on it settled down into a good batting surface. Informs that post the Lunch break on Day 2, the pitch started to assist the spinners and we also witnessed some uneven bounce. Feels that had Ashwin and Jadeja bowled on Day 1, they would have kept pressure and bowled great lines. Concludes by saying that the spinners will get a lot of purchase with the way the pitch has started to behave.
  • South Africa had a tricky period before Stumps to survive but they failed to deal with the might of the Indian spinners. Both Ashwin and Jadeja were too hot to handle and the Saffas lost three wickets in a jiffy. Had Bavuma not got dropped, it would have been even worse for the visiting side. Dean Elgar survived but he never looked comfortable. Big task ahead on Day 3.
  • The visitors were abysmal with the ball and struggled for wickets throughout. Apart from a period in the afternoon session where South Africa snapped up four wickets, there wasn't much happening for them. Their frontline spinners flopped miserably and the speedster Kagiso Rabada was also flavourless. The decision to pick three spinners did not work for South Africa.
  • Earlier in the day, India started from where they left off on Day 1 with Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal continuing to milk runs. Rohit Sharma was the first wicket to fall as he was dismissed for an impressive 176. Mayank Agarwal, as mentioned earlier, carried on to get his maiden double ton which boosted the total of India. The other batsmen also chipped in with valuable runs before India decided to declare on 502/7!
  • After the outstanding work done by the Indian batsmen, their spinners got into the act to pick up three quick wickets which sweetened things further for the home team. The spinners, Ashwin and Jadeja, were on target from the word go and picked up three wickets between them.
  • Another day which has been dominated by India! They have this Test match firmly in their grasp and that's mainly due to the contributions of their new opening pair. One half of that pair, Mayank Agarwal, scored a double ton today and is leading his team off the ground.
